The teachers will be honored with a Limo Lunch on May 13 sponsored by the Bellmead Lions Club, the Bellmead Chamber of Commerce, Bellmead American Bank, Signature Limousines and La Vega ISD. Bill Swearingen La Vega High School Swearingen has been teaching at LVISD for 13 years and currently teaches Spanish II and Spanish III at La Vega High School. He also tutors students in the after-school program, serves as the Sophomore Class Sponsor, is a mentor teacher for new staff and serves on the Parent Involvement Committee. Students look forward to attending Swearingen’s class each day, where he radiates his love for his job and his students through his attitude and actions. Swearingen’s students know they will be welcomed with open arms, a smile and words of encouragement. He is a model of great character and ethics for all of his students, especially his male students. Swearingen encourages learning in a fun, exciting and unique way while holding them to a high standard of education. He always has a positive attitude and is the first teacher to volunteer when help is needed. He never grumbles or complains and does not speak negative about colleagues or students, regardless of the circumstance. Swearingen is also an ordained Baptist minister and a Greek and New Testament scholar. He is married with two children and enjoys walks with his wife, listening to gospel music and reading the daily newspaper. Demetrice Conner La Vega Junior High School George Dixon Campus Conner is a proud La Vega alumni and has been teaching for 12 years, 11 with LVISD, currently teaching Texas History and coaching. Connor is consistent, organized and structured while providing excellent classroom management skills. She is the bedrock on which many of the campus procedures and routines are built on. Conner has also become one of the campus leaders in the pilot of the Restorative Discipline program, mentoring other staff members in the processes as well as wholeheartedly implementing them in her classroom. Conner has taken the further step of taking on campus morale and helping to increase positivity at the junior high and has consistently made the campus a better place to be for students, parents, staff members and administrators. Conner, also known as Coach Conner, says she feels fortunate to work for the district she graduated from, working with fellow classmates, as well as working with educators who were her teachers when she was a high school student. When not at work, Coach Conner enjoys shopping, attending sporting events, travelling with her extended family, preparing for her work with her church programs and spending time with her son. Shenequa Williams La Vega Intermediate School H.P. Miles Campus Williams has been teaching since 2010 and has been at the intermediate school for two years, currently teaching sixth grade English/Lan- guage Arts. She serves on the AVID Site Committee, participates in the 1:1 Technology Pilot, is a La Vega Pirates Education Foundation grant recipient and is a History Fair and UIL Sponsor. Williams is a proud 1999 LVHS graduate and began her career as a library aide. She believes that every student can and will learn and has high expectations for students in and out of the classroom. She enjoys seeing her students grow academically and socially throughout the school year. Her love for education is heavily influenced by her parents and other family members who always stressed the importance of gaining knowledge to make a difference in the world. Her goals are to continue to prepare future leaders and be an educator that her students will forever appreciate. Williams enjoys spending time with her family and loved ones, listening to music, reading and helping others. She also serves as a volunteer for the Susan G. Komen Race in honor of her mother. Eva Elizondo La Vega Elementary School Elizondo is currently a first grade bilingual teacher at La Vega Elementary School. She has been teaching for 20 years and has been at LVISD for the last five years. She was also named Teacher of the Year in 2007 at Waco ISD. Elizondo has a plethora of knowledge from her abundant years of experience and has positively influenced many students and staff at LVISD. She is extremely passionate about teaching, which is evidenced through her interactions with her students and her LVES family. She is a hard worker who puts forth effort to push students to suc- ceed. Her rapport with children is natural and instinctive, facilitating a love of learning. She wants her students to be creative and to be citizens with a love of learning who will always question and explore for the rest of their lives. Elizondo is a great role model, excellent mentor and a dependable “go-to” teacher. She is a kind, creative and sincere educator who is always there to lend an ear and offer advice. Elizondo is married and has one son and a four-year-old granddaughter. Kathy Plummer La Vega Primary School Plummer graduated from La Vega High School and began her teaching career here in 1983. After several moves, she has returned home and currently teaches Kindergarten. Plummer has embraced every strategy and program introduced at La Vega Primary School. She is kind, compassionate and respectful to students, coworkers and parents, all the while holding to high expectations. She has a love of children that enables her to build meaningful relationships with the students and their families. Plummer states that she loves teaching and loves La Vega ISD! She is motivated daily by the 20 little faces who greet her at the door each morning. The La Vega Primary School family feels blessed by her presence each and every day. Mrs. Plummer has three grown children, four grandchildren, and another grandchild on the way. She loves her children, grandchildren, teaching and seeing her favorite band, “The Mavericks,” every chance she gets. The winners were: 1st Place: Aleka Nelson - “Vegetable Salad” 2nd Place: Ta’Niyah Iglehart - “Juicy Fruit Salad” 3rd Place: Dajah Fletcher - “Monster Salad” All the student chefs received a certificate and a medal for their participation. The event was organized by Dave Thiel, Director of Child Nutrition Services for La Vega ISD; Principal Kristi Rizo and the staff at La Vega Intermediate H.P. Miles Campus. Deputy Superintendent Diane Roepke for hosted and served as master of ceremonies for the event. Also working on the event were Kay Nitschke and the intermediate school cafeteria staff; and Theresa Sealey and Rosie Slater from the Child Nutrition Office. The judges were Dr. Linda Volz, LVISD; Jenn Kattner, ARAMARK Director at Midway ISD; and Baylor Executive Chef Ben Hernandez. The winning recipes will be served at all LVISD campuses in the coming weeks.
