Hands-on Training: The Key to Safety for Young and First

What people are saying…
Special Programs
“In Control’s Advanced Driver Training School provides a powerful
learning experience in a controlled environment. Young drivers gain
confidence and a better understanding of how cars handle in real-life
situations. Parents can be assured that safe driving behaviors are
reinforced throughout the course.”
Winter Driving School
Winter weather can result in
extremely dangerous driving
conditions–especially in New
England. With a few key
techniques and hands-on
experience, drivers can learn
to be safe in any weather.

At In Control, we know that a car from our fleet will most likely
perform differently in the snow than yours, so you will use your
own car for our Winter Driving Program.
Visit us online to get on our Snow Email List for an exciting and
informative hands-on winter driving lesson. You’ll learn the proper
techniques to stay safe in your car when the roads get slippery.
Private One-on-One Lessons
Some young drivers prefer a focused, non-threatening approach to
learning how to drive. We understand that operating a motor vehicle
can be very intimidating for some teens and first-time drivers, so we
offer private lessons to foster a high comfort level conducive to
effective learning. Our professional instructors build confidence
and good driving habits in a safe, controlled environment.
We customize our private lessons after determining the experience
and comfort level of the individual student. Please call us today for
scheduling and pricing for this special service.
“In Control’s program should be a requirement for all new drivers.
Even experienced drivers can benefit from this experience.”

for Young and First-time Drivers
“I took In Control’s program with some of my students at Hingham
High. This is one of the greatest public safety initiatives I’ve ever
seen. The kids loved it, but more importantly, their driving skills
increased exponentially.”
Karen Beatty, Curriculum Director, Hingham High School
“A Driving School that goes way beyond driver’s ed.”

What is the In Control
Advanced Driver Training Program?
Advanced Driver Training was developed through careful analysis
of the most common accident types and most dangerous driving
situations. As professional driving instructors to police, fire, and other
emergency personnel, we understand the skills required to stay safe
behind the wheel.
We sought advice from police and
insurance investigators about what
attitudes and skills are critical and
how they could be developed in
average drivers. From this advice,
one thing became clear:
The skills and attitudes needed to be a safe driver can
be developed in every driver through hands-on training.
In Control’s Advanced Driver Training
course is the product of that research–
a curriculum of hands-on training with
professional feedback that teaches
average drivers to be great and great
drivers to be better.
During the half-day (41/2 hour) In Control Advanced Driver Training
program, participants learn the following essential skills:
• Defensive driving techniques
Who are the Instructors?
When looking for instructors,
In Control looked to where
people practice driving the
most… the racetrack. The
In Control team is made up
of the most talented drivers
in New England–experts who
understand vehicle dynamics
and advanced car control and practice these skills on the racetrack.
Equally important is the ability to teach these skills and to do so in a
respectful, non-threatening way. The In Control program is designed to
be fun, memorable, and meaningful.
We do not glorify racing to young drivers. Our instructors are dedicated
professionals who have undergone a thorough screening process
including skills assessment, driving record checks, drug screening, and
background checks. Since opening in 2003, we’ve trained over 5,000
students and we’re very proud of our flawless safety record.
Where are classes held?
This level of closed-course hands-on training
absolutely cannot be practiced on public roads
or even in a simulator. Instruction takes place at
several dedicated training centers where drivers
learn how to perform emergency maneuvers
in a safe, controlled environment.
Regular classes are held at In Control’s
primary training facility at the former Naval
Air Station in South Weymouth, MA.
The In Control Mobile Classroom travels
to other suitable locations for special
events and on-site training.

Ten Tips for Safer Driving
1. Maintain a Safe Distance
The faster a car is traveling, the greater the distance it needs to stop.
A distance of one car length per every 10mph is simply not enough.
2. Avoid Backing Up
Drivers can’t see out their rear view mirror any closer than 50ft.
behind the car, so backing up should be avoided whenever possible.
3. Nine and Three, Not Ten and Two
Airbags deploy at a rate of 250mph. When not properly positioned, the
airbags can turn hands into projectiles that cause additional injury.
4. Seatbelts for All Occupants
Even if you’re not in a crash, seatbelts keep passengers in their seats
so they don’t impair the driver’s ability to control the car.
5. Seatbelts for Control
Seatbelts anchor the driver in the seat so the steering wheel is used
for control only–not for driver restraint.
6. Watch Further Down the Road
Keeping an eye on the road two or three seconds ahead allows for
longer reaction time and fewer sudden stops.
7. Know Your Brakes
Proper braking techniques vary, depending on whether or not the car
has Antilock Brakes. Never operate a vehicle if you don’t know the
braking system and how to use it effectively.
8. Brake First, Swerve Second
Braking before swerving increases traction on the front wheels,
providing greater control of the vehicle. It also prevents SUV roll-overs.
9. SUVs and AWDs Do Not Equal Safety and Control
SUVs and AWD vehicles offer some advantages, but not safety
advantages. SUVs are more difficult to control and tend to roll over.
10. Drive Alert
Avoid driving when tired. A person driving on four hours of sleep or
less possesses the equivalent driving skills of a legally drunk driver.
Who qualifies to attend the course?
• Personal risk assessment
• Proper seating and hand placement
• Emergency braking (including ABS)
• Emergency lane changes

"This training made me realize
that I wasn’t as good of a driver
as I thought I was."
A recent In Control graduate
Students must have at least a learner’s permit or driver’s license and
enough experience to generally control a vehicle. The ideal student has
completed the on-road portion of traditional driver’s education but has
not yet earned a driver’s license. Our goal is to work with students
before they develop bad driving habits. Our classes generally contain a
variety of students including new drivers with only permits as well as
older teens and recent college graduates who wish to improve their
skills. We encourage parents to join and we offer significant discounts
to additional family members. By witnessing our training first-hand,
parents can help reinforce these important lessons at home. (We’ve
never had a parent walk away without telling us how much they were
surprised to learn at our class.) There’s no need to bring your own car,
either–students use In Control’s fleet of safe, current model sedans.
