GUIDED PRACTICE
A social hierarchy is when a culture has different levels of people with
different jobs. The higher your level, the better status you have. Having a good
job means having a higher social status on the hierarchy (social pyramid).
Having a job that is not considered good means a lower status on the
hierarchy. In Ancient Mesopotamia, the highest level was made up of priests,
land owners, and government officials. These people lived in white houses in
the center of the city. The majority of people were in the common class. The
common class was filled with workers such as farmers, craftsmen and
merchants, and traders. The common people did not live in the center of the
city and their houses were brown. They did not own property (land) or slaves.
The lowest social class in Mesopotamia was slaves. Slaves did not own any
property, or have any rights. They lived in their owner’s houses.
