They have been highly trained for RASCargO duties at the ICTS RASCargO training unit in Oxfordshire where they are required to be certified to DfT and MOD standards for working on the clearing of cargo for airports throughout the UK. In addition other dogs are trained to (ACPO) Association of Chief Police Officers standards to search either for explosives at major sporting events and high profile targets including coach transport or deployed in support of counter drug operations for the Police, corporations, the licensed trade, night economy and schools. Becci Hodge & Skip. Mark Somerville Riggs & Pippa. Colin Rose, Mitzi & Mason “We believe every dog has a job; whether it be for companionship, a member of a family or part of the ICTS-GIS working family” A spokesperson from Battersea Dogs Home commented “We have several ex-Battersea dogs now working for ICTS. Mason, a cross breed, was a very energetic dog who would have needed a specialised home with someone willing to take on a project. We recognised that he would be happier as a working dog and this is a wonderful way of channelling his energies. He loves every minute of it and is finding the work stimulating and rewarding. Mitzi is another ex-Battersea dog who is now a fully trained up member of the ICTS dog team. She was brought into Battersea at nine months old and being a bright, boisterous Collie cross, our Working Dogs Co-ordinator spotted her potential for a working home. Mitzi has thrived in her fulfilling role and is a very contented lady.” Established in 1860, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is a charity that aims never to turn away a dog or cat in need of help. Every year the Home takes in around 12,000 dogs and cats. They reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners; when this is not possible they care for them until new homes can be found. They also educate the public about responsible pet ownership. Because they never turn an animal away, sometimes they receive dogs who are not suited to a normal home environment or who would be happier as a working dog. Battersea Dogs Homes have contacts with many great organisations, such as ICTS, the Police and The National Search and Rescue Dog Association. Colin Rose RASCargO Training Manger said “We believe every dog has a job whether it be for companionship, a member of a family or part of the ICTS working family. We take the welfare of all dogs very seriously and for those dogs that have the right qualities for our work it can be very rewarding providing a focus and fun for those dogs that may well have come from difficult circumstances. The effective use of search dogs has proven to be a valuable asset” Patricia Grant Wilson ICTS Public Relations Re-Joyce in Belfast - we now have our own MBE New Contract - US Airways Joyce Crossan kindly brought the brooch she received from the Queen for us all to view (this is the closest I may ever get to see something like this never mind holding one). Phil Linford Station Manager VOLUME 13 PAGE ICTS CARGO TRAINING IN MOLDOVA with RUSSIAN Eagle! Between the 13th-22nd Feb, I had the great pleasure of delivering an Air Cargo Training course to the security staff in Kishinev (Chisinau) Airport in the Republic of Moldova. The first thing I did when I was asked to deliver the course was consult a world map, as I had never before heard of this country (for those of you who don’t know, Moldova is positioned between Ukraine and Romania!). “fear not, for I am just a small fish in a very big pond...” It was a strange experience at first to be in a country where not a lot of people could speak the same language as you, however this barrier did not stop me and my trainees from understanding each other perfectly. We even managed to throw around a few jokes which is always great on a course. I know for sure the understanding was there because whenever they told me something they didn’t want me to tell their managers I use to say “fear not, for I am just a small fish in a very big pond.” On the final day of the course they presented me with flowers, chocolates and lovely little presents, one which was a glass picture of a small fish in a big pond! How super is that! Even the £70 excess baggage charge on my way back didn’t upset me too much. I did however receive some major shocks… which I don’t think I still have my head around. When I kicked off the course, I was soon to discover that Moldovans are exceptionally hard workers. Why do I say that… well... here we go; Day 1 – We begin at 09:00 am with introductions, ice breakers, and a chat about what tasks they usually carry out. It was during this chat that I was to discover that some of the trainees in the class had just finished a very long shift!!! LHR Cargo’s trainer Annette with her class of 16 I must have looked like I had seen a ghost when they told me that, and they thought it was funny that I was so surprised. The biggest shock for me was that those who had just finished the shift wanted to stay on the course to learn more about Air Cargo Security. How’s that for eagerness and motivation, I ask you! (No excuses about late nights for any of my future trainees.) During the course we also had the benefit of using the EAGLE, but with a twist – it was in Russian. It was at this point that I was to discover that the first language for most of the students in the class including my translator was Romanian. Most kids in Moldova learn Russian when they grow up, but nowadays it is a practice which has started to die out. Just another obstacle to jump over, which we manage to do in pure style! Annette O’Connor Senior Trainer Finally some simple words in Russian for you all to use at your leisure. Hi / Hello – Privet Yes – Da No – Net Fine, and how are you? - Harosho, a kak ty? Everything is under control - Vsyo pad kontrolem How are you? - Kak vashi dela? Not too bad – Neplokho One minute! - Minutku! Danny Stern Managing Director VOLUME 13 PAGE 5 HEATHROW CONNECT (HEX) My name is Wayne Duro and I am a Duty Manager on the Heathrow Connect, Terminal Five Contract. I started work as a Security Officer at Epsom and St Hillier Trust for a facilities management company called Interserve. ICTS took over the contract and I took over in the role of Shift Supervisor. I was then promoted in October 2007 to the Duty Manager role at Paddington/Heathrow. My typical work-day runs from 8am to 7pm. My first trip is to the Paddington Cash Office where I pop in to ensure that the operation is running smoothly and the accounts are balanced from the night before. I then liaise with the Supervisors to check that staffing levels are correct and the day is getting off to a good start. I carry out spot inspections on the Heathrow Connect, between the station and the airport. I then proceed to Heathrow Terminal Five where I spend some time with the ICTS staff who work at London Underground. Once all is running smoothly there, it is back to Paddington to deal with any other ad hoc issues that the day brings. Wayne Duro, Duty Manager The Paddington contract is a very diverse assignment with many aspects to it. On any shift there are two or three Shift Supervisors that report to the Duty Manager. We have people on the trains providing a Customer Service / Security role. There are Station Operating Assistants at Terminal Five that provide gate line duties and an excess fares office. The cash office at Paddington provide any cash related duties for ICTS and the Heathrow Express. Trolley personnel are at all the major terminals and we provide night security for Heathrow express at Central terminal area, and Terminal Four and Five. No two days are ever the same and you never know what the day is going to bring, it can run smoothly or be totally chaotic especially if we have disruptions, this may be due to signal failure, faulty lines, engineering work and even due to people jumping in front of trains. I can truly say that every moment I have worked at Paddington I have thoroughly enjoyed and learned something new everyday. Wayne Duro Duty Manager FAREWELL ICTS Glasgow Aviation team would like to take this opportunity to bid Bernard Grant a fond farewell on his retirement. Benny has been an Passenger Interviewer with us since 2001. His experience has proved invaluable in recent years during our annual intake of seasonal staff. Benny could always be counted on to help and guide those new to the company by sharing his knowledge of procedures in a warm and friendly manner. Benny you will be missed by everyone at GLA but we wish you all the best of luck and a happy, relaxing retirement. Julia Cairns - Office Manager “The HEX Paddington contract is very diverse with many aspects to it.” PAGE 6 INTERVIEW COURSE, EDINBURGH It was smiles all round in Edinburgh as the Security Interviewers Course was completed. The tickets are a token of appreciation from Aer Arann for your professional, efficient and smooth running of the Security Operation and for the high standard of customer service displayed during a hectic period at Cardiff Airport which in turn once again makes you all a credit to ICTS (UK) Ltd. The two free open ended tickets are for a trip to Dublin with Aer Arann valid up to the beginning of August 2009. All of the employee’s involved with the final stages of the Six Nations in March will have their names mixed together in a pot and an independent member of the Airport community will draw the winning name on behalf of ICTS (UK) Ltd. Thank you and well done to you all, good luck with the draw! Jason Campbell VOLUME PAGE 13 7 CONGRATULATIONS TO... All staff on the First Great Western Contract would like to congratulate Mrs Dorota Grebieszczenko on the birth of her baby boy, Dorota a mother also to two girls joined ICTS in August 2007. Despite initially being on a short term contract of 5 weeks, to assist with the enrolment issue of student ID cards (Unique) at TVU in Ealing, Dorotas excellent attitude, willingness, commitment and professionalism, saw her being offered an opportunity of extending her stay with ICTS after only 2 weeks. Dorota took on a three month contract as a TSSO assistant in Reading working directly for our client FGW at Reading station. Again due to Dorota’s continued commitment and professionalism the Client soon realised that her services had become invaluable to them and the contract was extended till the current time. I would therefore like to thank Dorota for the excellent job done throughout her time with ICTS and wish her good luck with the new addition. Andrew Milligan Contract Manager First Great Western contract 5 YEARS OF SERVICE Congratulations to Darren Watson, Security Systems Manager, on achieving his 5 years Service Award. Darren has over 20 years experience in the electronic security industry. Having joined ICTS in 2004 Darren’s focus was to provide the technical requirements and installation needs of the Fortress Systems installations in the football stadiums as well as technical support for other European based projects. Since 2004 Darren has developed a business in the UK that continues to provide installation and consultancy to Fortress and Europe as well as developing an electronic security business in its own right selling, installing and maintaining a wide range of systems in the UK. Also congratulations to Muriel Jarvis on her 10 Years service PAGE 8 MANN & OVERTON ICTS staff have come together in 2009 with an outstanding report of excellence from Mann & Overton. Mann & Overton have been very satisfied with the high level service ICTS provided. As the UK’s main dealership for Taxis, Mann & Overton pulled out all the stops to recall and modify 4000 cabs during the last Quarter of 2008. ICTS worked jointly with all the management levels of Mann & Overton and heads of LTI (the factory producing the cabs). Times are hard for the vehicle industry worldwide, but ICTS worked 24/7 to ensure we provided all the support and assistance we could. Like all companies, Mann & Overton is having to examine every expenditure to remain a competitive market leader and offer real value to its customers. In line with this, ICTS numbers were reduced from 12 to 10 officers. In response, ICTS officers pulled together, worked harder and more effectively than ever to become a great team with positive attitudes. I would like to thank everyone at ICTS for their help - especially to all my security officers at Mann & Overton for their hard work and the extra effort they have put in. We look forward to providing the best quality service to Mann & Overton throughout 2009. Robin Ramessar - Contract Manager IRISH RUGBY AIRLIFT As you are well aware, by your valuable assistance during the build up and planning stages, it was ‘Airlift’ time once again on the evening of Saturday 21st March 2009. (I know it will be the same on the morning of the 22nd March 2009 and although I will not be in situ I know that your Staff will acquit themselves well). With regards to Saturday, I can inform you that as usual all of your Staff, very ably led by your Duty Manager Sarah Croll, was once again a credit to ICTS (UK) and to the Airport. They handled several hundred passengers in a very short time and I was very impressed by the high standard of Searching, Control and Compliance attained at Central Search during the very hectic period that passengers were being processed. I should also mention that the Customer Service side of the process was not forgotten and was again of a very high standard. Details such as testing the Hand Held Metal Detectors before use each time showed me the exacting detail that you’re Staff attains to ensure full compliance at all times. Please pass on my personal thanks to all of your Staff involved in the ‘Airlift’ for a job very well done and once again ensuring that the reputation of the Airport’s handling of Airlifts remained at a very highly professional status. Regards, Dennis Email sent to Jason Campbell from Dennis Bailey-Cwl Airport Helder, I just wanted to drop you a note to thank-you for your staff's vigilance today. The ICTS staff in our building were commented on very highly by the entire audit team, who stated that we were demonstrating two best practices. In particular they were impressed by their knowledge of what constituted known and unknown cargo, and with the speed with which they were challenged upon entering the warehouse floor. Please pass on all of our thanks to Roy Gillett, Tara Stokoe, and the rest of the team that were on duty today. Thanks / Regards Steve Coles Customer Service Manager E-Mail from Air Canada to Helder Marques VOLUME PAGE 13 9 ICTS, UK 2009 - THE YEAR OF SALES ICTS UK has a core focus for 2009 of significantly increasing new business sales across the company. With this goal in mind the UK Business has expanded the Commercial Division to drive and manage the targeted growth for this year. Kelly McCartney, Commercial Manager said: “We have a core commitment to see significant sales growth this year. We have a strategic focus on the sales side of the business employing a dedicated sales person for Integrated Services (David Hatmil) and appointing a Business Development Manager (Angela Aylett) to take a strategic view of the growth of ICTS UK across the electronics, manpower, canine and smartcard divisions.” Already this year Q1 has seen a 50% increase in quotes in the electronics division. Security Systems has also appointed a further sales person, James Murphy who has moved from ADT to join the ICTS UK team. April saw the greatest density of applicable tenders published, across all divisions, that Garry Malone (Marketing Manager) has ever responded to in his 14 years with ICTS. In Integrated Services, David Hatmil has further driven our tender potential with the introduction of key business development opportunities including a meeting with DP World – the world’s largest owner of container ports. For Unique, 2009 will be a defining year. Smartcard technology is on the increase in the Universities and Angela Aylett will be heading the business development initiative for this division. The canine units have had a sound start to the year with the RASCagO training unit successfully attaining accreditation for four additional dogs for screening. GIS are still developing there operations within sporting stadia for this years test matches, as well as increasing their profile in the public sector, police forces and the education market . We have already significantly increased our sales focus and drive which, in turn, has already produced results. We will continue to support this sales focus and drive the results that we know are possible. Angela Aylett—Business Development Manager USING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY The Epsom contract is also taking advantage of the latest technology; by conducting patrols using a PDA System know as the ICTS COYOTE PATROL SYSTEM. Before an Officer goes on Patrol they logon to a PDA using their unique ICTS ID BADGE then select a patrol route from a menu and proceed with the patrol. The patrol is recorded electronically and produces a report that is synchronised with SMU and allows any authorised user to check such reports for the purpose of audits. Since the introduction of this system, it has proved very popular with staff and also is helpful during the initial training period of a new starter, because the system presents you with a list of areas with a patrol point. Graham Mayes PAGE 10 SECURITY AWARENESS EVENT AT LONDON SOUTH BANK UNIVERSITY As part of a new initiative aimed at reducing the fear of crime within the London Borough of Southwark, ICTS working in conjunction with our LSBU client staged a three day security awareness event at the London South Bank University. Attendees to the event included the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, Southwark Council, Community Wardens and Southwark Victim Support. This was the first awareness event of its kind to be held within the University for a number of years. Security Administrator Asha Merchant introducing ICTS The campaign was aimed at reaching as many students and staff as possible. A stand was erected, and manned throughout the three days by uniformed security officers as well as the management team. Security also delivered a Conflict Management seminar on all three days. The venue for the event changed daily to include the Keyworth Centre, London Road Building and the Borough Road complex. In addition to an array of handouts and leaflets being distributed, the security team offered practical advice on personal and vehicle safety as well as basic crime prevention. Security also handed out a security quiz to all persons entering the buildings, with all correct entries going into a prize draw, the winner to receive a DVD player donated by ICTS. With over 1600 correct entries, the draw took place on the final day of the event, with Mike Wilkinson, LSBU Pro-Vice Chancellor making the draw. Gary Benwell - Regional Manager Security Supervisors, Chris Harrison and Eddie Voegli The Security Quiz winner, Student Asif Daniels receiving his prize from the team Security Officers Mohamed Jalloh and Danny Kabala with Pro-Vice Chancellor Mike Wilkinson and supervisor Eddie Voegli SAFER COMMUNITIES APPROACH AT THE EPSOM CONTRACT The ICTS Security team at the Epsom & St Helier Hospitals NHS Trust contract are taking a new approach towards the promotion of the department and to help with the reduction of crime through an increased public relations scheme known as “SAFER COMMUNITIES’’. Each team will be responsible for a specific area of the site, this will provide an increased security presence as well as offering staff and other hospital users the opportunity to attend regular Crime Prevention meeting held by security and the local Police SNT. We are hoping this service will reassure staff, visitors and patients that the security team are trying everything possible to help with the reduction of crime and continuing with our efforts of building a positive relationship with staff and hospital users. Graham Mayes - Contract Manager VOLUME PAGE 13 11 WHATS’S THE SCORE? The FSOA (Football Safety Officers Association) held their AGM in Barnsley South Yorkshire on 26th March. The event was attended by key representatives from the world of stadia security. Poignantly the event saw John Rutherford the Head of Security at Hillsborough become chairman in the year of the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster when 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives. The FSOA was born out of the events of that day and has since made a major contribution to security and safety at stadiums throughout the UK by sharing best practice. The AGM dinner sponsorship by ICTS was orchestrated by Patricia Grant-Wilson (ICTS Public Relations). In response to the Chairman’s welcome and thanks John Franklin-Webb on behalf of ICTS responded by emphasising the importance of partnership working on matters of safety and security with those who may under normal circumstance be in competition. On day two of the conference, John Franklin-Webb from ICTS-GIS gave a presentation highlighting the risk at sporting events from terrorist attack and the benefits of deploying explosive search dogs in a protective role. The ICTS exhibition stand was manned by Jed Marshall, Operations Manager and Search Advisor Ray Dobson. During lunch time a demonstration was undertaken using ICTS search dogs. ICTS are consequently developing relationships with Fulham FC, Chelsea FC and Hillsborough having undertaken an ICTS pilot programme earlier this year Patricia Grant Wilson - ICTS Public Relations EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH... Dear All, With regards to the attached Copy of the Security Employee of the Month, the circumstances are as follows. At approximately 07.15 hours on Friday 13th March 2009 Agent Helen Jones was on Security Duty at the Eastern Approach Road Check Point when she was approached by an elderly male person who was in possession of and brandishing a large carving type knife which he produced from a sock in which it was concealed. Helen retained her calm and requested that the male place the knife on the ground which he did, she then removed the knife to a safe haven and requested that the Airport Police be called to attend, which they did. It appears that the male is suffering from a form of Dementia and had been wandering about in the rain for some time from his home on the approach to the Airport. The Police assessed that the male was not a danger to the Public and returned him to his home, although this was not known to Agent Helen Jones at the time she dealt with the situation. Having discussed this incident with Jason the ICTS (UK) Station Manager, we both agreed that her actions were above and beyond her normal duties and that she should be commended for her handling of the situation. We believe that the accolade of Employee of the Month is well deserved and should be recognised as such. As well as the Certificate being posted in an appropriate position within the ICTS (UK) Office Helen will also receive a Bottle of Champagne. Regards, Dennis Email sent to Jason Campbell from Dennis Bailey- Cwl Airport VOLUME 13 PAGE 12 AND THE WINNER IS... Dennis Bailey, the Airport Security Manager took great pleasure in drawing the winning ticket from the lucky dip of 65 employee’s names that had taken part over the two days of that weekend in March. Jason Campbell HALF OF BRITONS RISKING THEIR HEALTH IN ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN A survey commissioned by HSF health plan found 48% of UK residents are putting off essential medical checks, such as the dentist or optician, because of the cost – a rise of 30% since 2006. Stephen Duff, HSF health plan, says the increase may be related to the slowing economy. “People are avoiding costly medical checks and, unfortunately, this will soon be reflected in the nation’s overall health. As more of us put off visits to the dentist or optician there will be an increase in preventable diseases, like mouth cancer and glaucoma. “Detecting dental and optical conditions early not only saves you money but also increases the chances of successful treatment. That’s why it’s especially important to sign up to a health cash plan during times of economic strain – it will ensure your health doesn’t suffer along with your wallet.” The survey of more than 2,000 UK residents also found that a staggering 70% believe dental visits should be covered by taxes, rather than paid for by the individual, with a further 57% adamant that the Government should be paying our optical bills. “All of the HSF health plan schemes will reimburse you from 50 – 100% of these everyday health costs not currently covered by our taxes, up to the plan maximum,” says Stephen Duff. “It’s the simplest way for people to avoid the worrying trend revealed in this survey, and to ensure they’re not putting themselves at serious and costly health risks further down the line.” HSF health plan have a dedicated area representative for each ICTS location: Belfast Airport – David Mace, mobile number 07968 122 715 Birmingham Airport – Jeremy Davies, mobile number 07970 843 215 Bristol Airport – Heather Payne, Mobile number 07967 171 692 Cardiff Airport - Jeremy Davies, mobile number 07970 843 215 Cargo Heathrow – Mike Todd, mobile number 07976 578 179 Edinburgh Airport – David Elliott, mobile number 07976 638 030 Gatwick Airport – Sally Hall, mobile number 07970 829 674 Glasgow Airport – Doreen McLean, mobile number 07976 638 031 Heathrow Airport - Mike Todd, mobile number 07976 578 179 Manchester Airport – Justine Cliffe, mobile number 07968 216 035 RASCargo - Mike Todd, mobile number 07976 578 179 GIS Didcot - Jeremy Davies, mobile number 07970 843 215 CAA - Sally Hall, mobile number 07970 829 674 Eurotunnel – Adrian Button, mobile number 07977 908 380 Epsom St Heliers Hospital - Sally Hall, mobile number 07970 829 674 Heathrow Connect - Mike Todd, mobile number 07976 578 179 London Southbank University - Adrian Button, mobile number 07977 908 380 Thames Valley University - Sally Hall, mobile number 07970 829 674 Middlesex University - Mike Todd, mobile number 07976 578 179 For more information on the HSF health plan for ICTS employees call or text your name and address to the HSF Area Representative for your location.
