Lara Primary School Education Week: Playing Cards and Dice Games Ideas It's common knowledge that young children whose parents read to them have a tremendous advantage in school, but did you know that you can also help your child learn mathematics by doing and supporting maths at home - with games? Games make learning maths interactive, fun and engaging. Games offer many advantages for improving student learning. Playing games is a form of cooperative learning and helps prepare children for real-life situations in which they must work with others to solve problems. Below are some suggested games that you can play together at home. Enjoy! MAKING TENS Using only numbers 1 – 9, place 9 cards face up in 3 rows of 3. The remainder of the deck are placed on top of the cards face up until all are gone leaving the nine piles of cards. Take it in turns to collect two cards that when added together make ten. This continues until all cards are removed. FIND THE NEIGHBOR Roll one or two dice and tell someone the numbers that come before and after. For a challenge, tell someone the numbers that are 5 more, 5 less, 10 more, or 10 less. COUNTING Set out cards 1- 6, 1-9 or 1- 12 all upside down. Roll the dice. If you roll a 6, find 6 and turn it over etc. Keep going until all cards are face up. Then go back again until they’re all face down once more. 10 IN A ROW Play game in pairs. All picture cards removed leaving numbers 1 – 10. Place 10 cards face up in a row. The remainder of the deck are kept together face down. Students take it in turn rolling a 6 or 10 sided dice. Using the number that is displayed on the dice, use combinations of cards to equal the number using addition or subtraction. GREATER THAN/LESS THAN BUZZ Game is played with 2 players. Cards are split evenly. Each player turns over one card. Greater than wins eg. 5 and 2, person with 5 the gets both cards. Variation- Each player turns over 2 cards, greater than wins. Eg. 43 and 78, person with 78 gets all cards. Or use 3 cards each for hundreds. MORE / LESS / THE SAME - PLACE VALUE Remove picture cards and jokers. Deal 6 cards to each player. Remaining cards are left placed in the middle, and turn the top one over. Taking turns the children discard the card according to the same number or one more or one less or Or two more or two less or double the number or half the number. The player must verbalise the choice they have made to discard and why. If a card cannot be discarded then a card is picked up from the deck. First to discard all their cards wins the game. DICE CRICKET Players have 2 dice of 2 different colours. 1 coloured die is for the runs, the other is for the wickets. Play cricket! ADDITION BUZZ Place a deck of cards in front of 2 players, face down. Remove the kings, jacks, and jokers. The ace represents 1 and the queen represents 0. All other cards are face value. Share out all the cards and place in one pile in front. Player one turns over their top two cards and adds them up ie. 7 and 10 = 17. Player two then turns over their top two cards hoping to get a higher score than player one. The player with the higher score keeps the card. Play continues all cards are used. The player with most cards wins. SUBTRACTION BUZZ Game is played with 2 players. Cards are split evenly between two players. Each player turns over two cards. Then take away smallest number from the bigger, eg, 9-7 = 2 The person with the highest answer wins all. EVEN / ODD Play with a partner. One person is even and the other is odd. Take turns rolling 2 (or 3) dice. Add the dice together and decide if the sum is odd or even. Players receive a point depending whether the sum is odd or even. RACE TO 100 Roll 2 dice and move a token along the hundreds chart. First player to land exactly on the 100 wins. ODD OR EVEN NUMBERS PICK UP STICKS Collect 100 icy-pole sticks and place them on a surface. Using one dice, players take turns rolling the dice and picking up the corresponding number of sticks, according to the number rolled. To pick up the last remaining sticks, the number rolled must match the remaining sticks exactly. When all of the sticks have been picked up, the player who has collected the most wins. SUBTRACT IT Place a deck of cards in front of two players face down. Kings, jacks, tens and jokers removed. Queens = 0 and aces=1. Players take it in turns to guess if their number is going to be odd or even. Take turns to flip over a card and read out the number. If player guesses if it is an odd or even number correctly they keep the card. If they guess incorrectly the card is given to the partner. Keep playing until the cards have all been used. The player with the most cards wins that game. Can play by flipping over two cards instead of one to make a number. Each player rolls one die at the same time. The first person to say the difference of the two dice gets a point. The first player to ten wins! ADD IT PIG Each player rolls one die at the same time. The first person to say the sum of the two dice gets a point. The first player to ten wins! Roll a dice to score points. You can keep rolling but as soon as you roll a "1," your the turn is over and you score nothing. GET TO ZERO! Each player starts with a score of 20. On their turn, roll one die and subtract that number from 20. Continue until one player gets to exactly zero.
