What happened? Our newsletter editor, Diane Strasbaugh, was out of the country. She went on church summer mission trips to Guatemala and then Peru. Her time was being spent on much more worthwhile endeavors than our newsletter. TASTE OF LEE: If you missed the July meeting, and, did not make the event, you need to know that the Taste of Lee was a great success. It was hot! It was rainy! The mosquitoes were terrible, really terrible. But, we got it done. A lot of effort, especially by Rachel Singletary, went into making this event a success. Thank you Rachel! A big thank you also to Lynn Manley and Carolyn Littleton (a friend of Rachel's) who joined us in feeding the mosquitoes in Homestead while picking fruit for the event. If you like torture, join us on next years' expedition. We also need to thank Roy Beckford and Martha Avila of the Lee County Extension Office and the Manatee Park Volunteer Gardeners. We couldn't have accomplished it without their assistance. FRUIT PICKING POLES: Here again, if you missed the last meeting you would have learned that I lost my "picker" on the return from the TOL fruit picking expedition at Homestead. I immediately ordered another one. It cost me $87.78. Ouch! The supplier agreed to allow our club members to purchase this same pole picker, which extends to fifteen feet and which has a cutter and nylon basket, at the same price he would charge his distributors. Our price per pole is $48.00. A list of those wishing to purchase the picker was made at the July meeting. They will be available for pickup at the August meeting. Thanks go to Lynn Manley for meeting the supplier and receiving our order. NEW MEMBERSHIP FEES: In the July meeting the Board recommended and the general membership approved an increase of $2.00 in new member fees. The change is to cover the increased cost of name badges and is effective for members joining in 2013. FRUITSCAPES FERTILIZER: Remember to contact me about a week before the upcoming meeting if you want me to bring your fertilizer needs to the meeting. See you at the meeting. Ed Wilson, Pres. UPCOMING EVENTS Aug 7th Meeting: Our speaker will be Monica Ozores-Hampton. The topic will be on composting. THINGS TO DO THIS MONTH Air Layers: Jessie Avalos (Fruitscapes) says now is a good time to start air layers. Pruning: If your mangos are done, now is the time to prune - if needed. Only take a couple of feet off of the tree. There will be no fruit next year if you over- prune. Mulch: You can get a pickup truck full of mulch for $10.60 at the Lee County Solid Waste Facility on Buckingham Road. TARASOLUTIONS You were promised a dosing "cheat sheet" for the TaraSolution products. I don't know when you would use all of these different dilutions, guess we have a lot to learn. Here it is: DILUTION RATIO CHART RATIO 1:1 2:1 4:1 6:1 8:1 10:1 16:1 20:1 30:1 40:1 50:1 64:1 100:1 128:1 175:1 256:1 512:1 600:1 800:1 1000:1 PRODUCT 128 ounces 64 ounces 32 ounces 21.4 ounces 16 ounces 112.8 ounces 8 ounces 6.4 ounces 4.3 ounces 3.2 ounces 2.6 ounces 2 ounces 1.3 ounces 1 ounce .75 ounce .50 ounce .25 ounce .22 ounce .16 ounce .13 ounce to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to WATER 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces 128 ounces For mixes in multiple gallons, multiply the product amount by the gallons to get the ratio.
