The Longfellow neighborhood:
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
The Greater Longfellow neighborhood is the largest neighborhood
in Minneapolis, made up of the Cooper, Hiawatha, Howe and
Longfellow neighborhoods. This amenity-rich community is
bordered on the East by the Mississippi River, the South by
Minnehaha Falls, the West by Highway 55 (Hiawatha Avenue) and
the Hiawatha Light Rail Line (LRT), and the North by the Midtown
Greenway, a former railroad corridor turned into biking and
walking trails.
ACTIVE AND ENGAGED RESIDENTS
There are more than 20,000 residents in Greater Longfellow and
approximately 7,000 households. The community is composed of
active residents who are involved in many projects, programs and
activities that support the environment, community crime prevention,
Mississippi River water quality, transportation improvements, housing
development, business support and community engagement efforts.
VIBRANT BUSINESS COMMUNITY
Greater Longfellow is a destination neighborhood for many in the
Twin Cities due to its close proximity to the Mississippi River, its
many biking and walking trails, its diverse and delicious array
of locally owned restaurants, and the historic and magnificent
Minnehaha Falls.
The Greater Longfellow Neighborhood also proudly declares itself
a Traditional Bungalow Neighborhood on signs throughout the
community and has had its historic homes featured in magazines
and books. Built to be affordable, manageable and, most of all,
beautiful, Longfellow provides the perfect setting for these cozy
Craftsman cottages.
Longfellow also has the highest concentration of Master Gardeners
of any neighborhood in the Twin Cities. In addition to multiple
community gardens, there is an active Longfellow Gardening Club,
many plant sales, seed exchanges and CSA pick up sites, and a
growing movement of urban agriculture, as can be seen by front
yard gardens, beehives and chicken coops.
Lake Street stretches through Longfellow to the Mississippi River,
providing a vast array of shops and businesses. From curry to
burgers, from flower shops to thrift stores, and from car mechanics
to cappuccinos, you can be sure to find it here.
Longfellow remains an affordable, friendly, diverse and walkable
neighborhood, with scenery and livability second to none.
Greater Longfellow is proud to be home to over 450 businesses and a
multitude of community resources. The businesses in this neighborhood
offer a wide variety of services that attract residents and visitors from
all over the Metro Area. Longfellow is recognized for being home to a
collective of vintage shops known as the Minnehaha Mile, as well as the
annual Lola art crawl, a weekend of access to hundreds of local artists.
Between Hiawatha and Snelling Avenues, an industrial zone stretches
from Lake Street south, providing jobs, warehouse space and
manufacturing opportunities. The Minnesota Commercial rail line carries
grain and scrap metal from Longfellow to the world, while the Blue Line
light rail makes Longfellow accessible to downtown Minneapolis, the
airport and Mall of America, with links to the Green Line serving St Paul
and the Northstar commuter rail heading to the north.
The Longfellow Business Association serves businesses large and
small in the neighborhood through monthly meetings and weekly
email newsletters to monitor issues that impact businesses, facilitate
communication and networking, provide business development resources
and support the greater Longfellow community.

NEIGHBORHOOD AMENITIES
GETTING INVOLVED
The Longfellow Community Hops Garden, located at 38th Street
and Dight Avenue, is the first of its kind in Minnesota. This garden,
which showcases a variety of hops grown for beer, follows the
traditional community/co-op garden model. However, this garden is
unique in that it devotes all the garden resources for local use.
The Longfellow Community Council (LCC) is the citizen participation
organization for the more than 20,000 residents in the Greater
Longfellow neighborhood. Through LCC, residents develop and
implement initiatives that address housing, crime, youth and
families, the environment, jobs and economic development, and a
variety of other topics that people in the community value. LCC’s
mission is to improve the quality of life, to develop a sense of
community and to promote the social and economic well being
of the people of the Longfellow, Cooper, Howe and Hiawatha
neighborhoods.
The Mississippi River Gorge is the only true gorge along the
Mississippi River’s 2,350-mile length. It is bordered on the
Minneapolis side by a regional trail for biking and walking and is
actively protected and restored by a group of Longfellow volunteers.
Minnehaha Falls. The New England poet, Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, was inspired by this Minneapolis waterfall, which
he gave worldwide fame in the “Song of Hiawatha” published in
1855. The Longfellow House Hospitality Center, which sits on the
northwest end of Minnehaha Regional Park, introduces the Grand
Rounds National Scenic Byway, a 50-mile outdoor recreation loop
in the Minneapolis area. Other Minnehaha Falls attractions include
the John H. Stevens House, the Princess Depot and the Minnehaha
Falls Off-leash Dog Park.
The Midtown Greenway is a 5.5-mile long former railroad corridor
in south Minneapolis with premier bicycling and walking trails.
This “bicycle highway” is owned by the Hennepin County Regional
Railroad Authority and the trails are maintained by the City of
Minneapolis.
Dowling Community Garden: Two blocks west of the Mississippi
river, the Dowling Community Garden is located on the grounds of
the Dowling Environmental School, at 46th Avenue and 39th Street
South in Minneapolis. The Dowling Garden is one of the last two
remaining Victory Gardens in use today and hosts more than 250
gardeners on over 190 plots.
