New Resources in African Studies
The Outreach Program of the Center for African Studies is designed to increase public knowledge about Africa
and also to enhance the broader community’s understanding of African peoples and cultures. Our programming
serves K-12 schools, community colleges, the media, community groups, the business community, and the
general public. The Center for African Studies website www.afrst.uiuc.edu includes detailed information for each
African country, newsletters, African studies indexes and bibliographic databases, language resources, Africana
videos, current events, and links to many relevant websites.

- Grant Opportunities for K-12 & Community College Teachers
The Center for African Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications from K12 teachers or community college instructors in Illinois schools for a summer fellowship of $1000. The
fellowship will support someone whose teaching of Africa content may be enhanced by using the
resources of the University of Illinois’ Center for African Studies, University Library, faculty members,
and/or acquiring materials for their classrooms and school. This grant will support curriculum
development projects conducted during the summer of 2005. The fellowships are not aimed at students
working on a Ph.D. dissertation or master’s thesis.
A sampling of past projects includes:

The Center for African Studies is a National Resource Center supported by the U.S. Department of
Education under Title VI of the Higher Education Act. The Center promotes interdisciplinary teaching and
research about Africa, and through its outreach office, it offers a number of teaching and informational
resources to a community and education groups on campus and beyond. These resources are funded by
the Center’s Title VI grant.
The University of Illinois Library is the largest public university collection in the world with over 40
departmental libraries and divisions, and the Africana collection is among the richest in North America.
An African studies librarian and staff provide bibliographic support and promote development of Africarelated collections that are established in a wide array of disciplines.
The Media Center at the library has developed a collection of videos, audiocassettes, and slides which
are available free of charge to university and affiliated faculty and students. The outreach office also has
books and audiovisual materials on African topics for public distribution.
The University of Illinois enjoys the holdings of two art museums that house African artifacts. The
Krannert Art Museum inaugurated in 1988 a permanent gallery of African art including most of the major
art styles from sub-Saharan Africa; and the Spurlock Museum holds a wide range of masks, figurines,
musical instruments, and textiles from all parts of the continent.
Application Procedure
Applications consist of a single page statement of proposed activity that includes how the applicant
expects the award will enhance their teaching of Africa (culture, history, arts, music, language, literature,
theatre, economics, and so on). Indicate in your proposal previous teaching or related experience in
Africa, the courses taught with African content and the percentage of African content covered in the
course. Applicants are further required to submit a curriculum vita and two letters of reference.
Awardees are expected to share the outcomes of their summer fellowship as a report that outlines the newly created
curriculum materials. The report is due by Sept. 15, 2005.
