FOOTBALL Proficiency Scale Based on the National SHAPE America Standards (Previous EALR 1: Component 1.1: Develops motor skills and movement concepts as developmentally appropriate.) (1.2.1) 2) Student can demonstrate the mechanics of movement as applied to specific motor skills: Targets: I can demonstrate: ● Basic Skill Mechanics o Holding/Proper Grip while running with ball ▪ High and tight ▪ Cover both ends of football o Throwing ▪ Use the laces, middle or ring finger on first lace ▪ Ball up by ear, body side on ▪ Step with off foot to target, snap wrist on throw, with palm out, and thumb down o Catching ▪ Above the waist, create a diamond with index fingers touching, and thumbs touching ▪ Below the waist, thumbs together ▪ Catch with the eyes: look ball into tuck. ● Basic Vocabulary o Defense ▪ Rush, flag pull/tackle, pass defense (zone vs. man to man) o Offense ▪ Run/lateral or pitch, pass, block ● Positions and Roles o Defense ▪ Defensive backs ● man on man or zone coverage to prevent successful pass completions or tackle/flag pull receivers running with ball ▪ Lineman ● rush quarterback, defend run/pitch play o Offense ▪ Quarter Back ● in charge of calling/choosing play ● forward pass to receiver(s) ● lateral/Pitch to running back ▪ Center ● snaps - ball may be snapped/flipped from the side or perform traditional long snap ▪ Receivers ● run variety of pass routes to receive pass from quarterback and score touchdown ● pass routes o Slant o Hitch/Stop o Wheel o Out o Streak/Go Understands safety rules and procedures in a variety of physical activities: Individual, dual/team, and lifetime activities. ● Rules o Kick-Off ▪ Must throw ball only ▪ Both teams must be respective 10 yard line ▪ Ball must clear half/25 yard line ▪ Ball is not live during Flag Football kick-off, Kicking/Throwing team must allow receiving team chance to catch or pick up the ball o Offensive Play ▪ Honor Line of Scrimmage ▪ Offense has 4 downs to score in most situations. ● Modification may include 4 downs to half, (1st down) then 4 more downs to score ▪ Teammates may block a defending player by screening them from the ball carrier. Excessive contact is not allowed. ▪ Quarterback is not allowed to rush/run with football unless he/she is rushed/blitzed by a defensive player ▪ Quarterback can pitch or forward pass the football. Hand-offs are not allowed. ● Modifications may include but are not limited to o 1 pitch every 4 downs o Defensive Play ▪ Must honor Line of Scrimmage ▪ One defensive player may rush the quarterback after a 3-5 second (alligator/Mississippi) ▪ Defensive backs may make a play on the pass in attempt to intercept ● Safety and Communication with other players/teammates 1) With help, the student can demonstrate partial success of level 2.
