Fall 2014 - CH.ILD Foundation

Fall 2014
THE CANADIAN FORCES SNOWBIRDS
AMBASSADORS FOR THE CH.I.L.D. FOUNDATION
The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are Ambassadors for the CH.I.L.D. Foundation, the only charity in Canada
so designated. On August 5, 2014 the Snowbirds 431 Air Demonstration Squadron met children with Crohn’s
Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and liver disorders at Landmark Aviation at Vancouver International Airport.
The pilots answered a myriad of questions from the children…“do your wings ever touch?” (No!)…“are there any
girl pilots?” (Yes!)…“do rockets make the smoke from the jets and where are the rockets?” (No, no rockets! Paint
is put in the exhaust to make the smoke!)
Each year in a different city of British Columbia, “Snowbirds Fly for CH.I.L.D.” takes place, thrilling thousands with
a spectacular aerial demonstration, which took place in White Rock this year on the evening of August 6th. For
the past 11 years, the CH.I.L.D. Foundation invites children and their families from the hosting community for a
luncheon and to meet with the Snowbirds Pilots. It is the absolute highlight of the summer! The children are able
to scramble among the jets, take photos with the pilots, and bring home autographed t-shirts and memorabilia
from their experience.
The CH.I.L.D. Foundation is very grateful for the support of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Bombardier Inc., the
Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Coralee Oakes, Minister
and CH.I.L.D. Foundation Director Scott Harrold, Civil Snowbird Coordinator, Director of Operations for CH.I.L.D.

B.C. SCREENING PROGRAMME
FOR LIVER DISEASE IN NEWBORNS
Early Detection of Biliary Atresia in newborns is crucial to quality of life, and, sadly,
more often the case, to life itself. As of June of this year, a programme implemented
by the Province of B.C.’s Perinatal Services will bring timely awareness to families.
There is no single blood test for Biliary Atresia, thus stool colour is the main tool for
early detection. Dr. Richard Schreiber, Director of B.C.’s Pediatric Liver Transplant
Program and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia, has been
the force behind the implementation of ‘stool cards’: “Poor outcomes due to late
diagnosis and surgery of infants three months of age or older remain a problem
throughout Canada and elsewhere in the world. We need to build awareness among
parents and health care providers about the need to look at stool colour as a disease
indicator.”
When a baby is discharged from the hospital, the parents are given a stool colour
card to which they can compare their newborn’s stool. Chalk white, or clay-coloured
stools is an indication that very little or no bile is reaching the intestine. The card can
also be downloaded from www.perinatalservices.bc

NEW DISCOVERY ABOUT THE GUT’S
IMMUNE DEFENSES MAY REVEAL THE
CAUSES OF INFLAMMATORY BOWEL
DISEASE
Highlighted in Cell Host & Microbe, August 13, 2014
Reprinted in part with kind permission from Child & Family
Research Institute Feature Article August 25, 2014
An important discovery about how our gut protects our bodies from
dangerous infections may help scientists understand the causes of
inflammatory bowel disease. “We know that every food-borne
bacterial pathogen that we encounter tries to infect the cells that line
the gut, but until now it wasn’t clear how these cells defended against
infection,” says Dr. Bruce Vallance, the senior and co-corresponding
author on the study recently published in the journal Cell Host and
Microbe. “We’ve discovered that these cells defend themselves
against dangerous bacteria using groups of proteins called
inflammasomes.”
Inflammasomes are groups of proteins that work together to trigger
an immune response. Previously, scientists thought that the cells
lining the gut weren’t able to make inflammasomes because these
cells don’t produce a protein called caspase 1. Scientists believed
caspase 1 was a necessary component of inflammasomes because
all known inflammasomes used capase 1 as a building block. In
collaboration with U.S. colleagues, Dr. Vallance’s team discovered
that the cells lining the gut do in fact make inflammasomes. Instead
of caspase 1, inflammasomes in the human gut are made up of
another protein called caspase 4. The way inflammasomes in the
gut protect us from infection is also unique. When inflammasomes in
the gut encounter dangerous bacteria, they separate from the
intestinal lining and pass out of the body as waste, taking the bacteria
with them. Other inflammasomes in the human body fight off infection
mainly by triggering inflammation.
This discovery has the potential to improve understanding of the
underlying causes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Scientists
now suspect that many people with IBD develop the disease because
their intestinal cells don’t properly activate inflammasomes, making
them more susceptible to chronic bacterial infections. It’s also
possible that inflammasomes help repair damage to the intestinal
walls, and that this healing function is impaired in people with IBD.
Every year at Children’s Hospital, approximately 100 children are
diagnosed with IBD. There’s no cure for IBD and about one-third of
patients eventually become resistant to current therapies. Dr.
Vallance’s lab was built and equipped with funding from the CH.I.L.D.
Foundation. It is the first and only lab in British Columbia dedicated
to finding a cure for IBD.
Photo at Right: CH.I.L.D. Foundation Research Chair, Dr. Bruce Vallance is pictured

CH.I.L.D. Foundation
funds crucial equipment for
ground-breaking research.
“We intend to collect intestinal samples from
IBD patients who are not responding to current
treatments – grow their cells into gut balls, and
then test how these intestinal lining cells
respond to bacteria and other intestinal
challenges, in order to better define why these
patients have IBD,” says Dr. Vallance. “We
hypothesize that the gut balls grown from IBD
patients will be leakier than those coming from
non-IBD patients. They may also show
exaggerated inflammatory responses to
bacteria or food particles. These results will help
us to optimize treatments for our IBD patients.”
The CH.I.L.D. Foundation Lab at Children’s
Hospital is only the second lab in Canada to
adopt this technique – (the other is at SickKids
Hospital in Toronto that shared this strategy with
Dr. Vallance because of a collaboration initiated
through the Canadian Children Inflammatory
Bowel Disease Network: A Joint Partnership of
CIHR and the CH.I.L.D. Foundation). The
CH.I.L.D. Foundation has recently provided
funds for the acquisition of a microinjector, the
use of which will enable researchers to test the
effects of new drugs on intestinal cells from
individual patients to see if they have beneficial
effects (ie. control their disease) prior to
administering the drugs directly to the patient.
Dr. Vallance believes this technique will ensure
improved safety for pediatric patients and will
ideally allow clinicians to provide improved
personalized medicine for each child, “We
anticipate that the system will significantly
advance IBD research and treatment in British
Columbia”.
SNOWBIRDS LIFT SPIRITS WITH PERFORMANCE
Reprinted in part with kind permission from Peace Arch News
As the City of White Rock prepared to welcome the Canadian Snowbirds aerobatic team, Eric shared his story about living with
Crohn’s disease to Peace Arch News Staff Reporter Sarah Massah. The performance over Semiahmoo Bay on Wednesday,
August 6, 2014 was aimed at increasing awareness of the CH.I.L.D. Foundation, which
strives to find a cure for inflammatory bowel disease and ulcerative colitis.
It’s not a romantic illness.
They don’t make
movies about Crohn’s.
Eric was 13 when he was first diagnosed with Crohn’s, which can affect any part of the
gastrointestinal tract. Now 21, Eric is encouraging others with the diagnosis to search for
ways to manage the disease. “Most people don’t know what it is. It’s not a romantic illness.
They don’t make movies about Crohn’s,” he said. “What I would really like people to do
who have the illness is to take control back. They have more power over their health than they think they do.”
While Eric currently keeps his Crohn’s under control – for the most part – with a proper diet, usually, the first step for doctors is
to prescribe medication. “For the first five years at Children’s Hospital, I was given all kinds of medication,” he said. “None of
them ever did anything. At one point, they called in my parents because they thought they weren’t giving the pills to me. They
didn’t think it was possible for me to be immune to all of them.”
Soon after, Eric began looking at his diet and cutting out foods that cause flare ups. “That’s been my real life saver, it’s been the
one thing that’s kept me going,” he said, noting he had been told in the past by a dietician that diet didn’t affect Crohn’s. “What
I want people to know– and this is not me saying that doctors are evil or want to hurt you – but I feel too many people that go
to the doctors with Crohn’s or something more drastic than a broken bone, they want to put it all on the doctor. “But what I want
people to know is that if you don’t take responsibility for your health, you’ll never know.”
And while Eric admitted living with Crohn’s has been a difficult journey, he said the most useful – and hardest – lesson has been
learning how to be happy in a terrible situation. Even with medication and the right diet, the disease can flare up, he said. “You feel
like crap… Everything falls apart. But you need to learn how to be happy despite that,” he said. “I wouldn’t have been here without
people who love and support me. It’s cliché, but it’s cliché because it’s the truth. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them.”
On August 6, 2014, Major Patrick Gobeil, Snowbird 1, Team Lead, and the
Canadian Forces Snowbirds Team presented CH.I.L.D. Foundation Chairman
of the Board Grace McCarthy, O.C., O.B.C. with the second Canadian flag
ever given from the team.
This Canadian Flag was flown by 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, the
Canadian Forces Snowbirds of the Royal Canadian Air Force, over
Parliament Hill during Canada Day festivities on July 1, 2014 and is signed by
all the pilots.
The crowd watching the presentation erupted into a standing ovation for
such an honour. Thank you to Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher England,
Commanding Officer, and to the entire Squadron.
