St Michael’s School 12 October, 2016 Newsletter No: 6 Inappropriate Parking in Radcliffe Avenue We have received several phone calls from a very distressed lady who lives in Radcliffe Avenue. Her husband, who was seriously ill last year, needs to attend Chase Farm Hospital three times each week. Unfortunately, the ambulance that comes to collect him cannot park outside her house because cars are parked over some, or all, of the white line and dropped kerb of her driveway. The ambulance driver has to park up the road, leaving vulnerable patients unattended, then the lady’s husband has to walk with the driver to the ambulance. This is unacceptable. The resident reported that in most cases, when she goes out to stop people parking, they move: (should she have to do this in the first place?) However, on previous occasions, people have been abusive and sworn at her. We find it hard to believe that there are any parents at St Michael’s who would behave in such a thoughtless way; unfortunately, the evidence suggests differently. Please think about where you park – park further away and walk some of the way to school. Whatever you do, DO NOT park across residents’ driveways. Calling all Local Historians! On our return to school after half-term (w/c 31st October), we are holding a ‘Local History’ themed week. Our aim is for children to learn as much as possible about the rich history of our local area and we plan to be out and about a great deal. As well as known treasures, such as Forty Hall, we will look at how the area has developed over centuries in terms of housing, business, schools and transport. This is where you can help us! If you have any photographs, maps or stories about your house, road or family that you think would be interesting, please let us know. If there are places or themes that you think would be of interest to the children, let us know! We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of information in our school archives which we will also be using. This extract is from the log book, October 13th 1882: St Michael’s Boys’ School Enfield During the past week, several boys have played truant – have punished these boys with 2 cuts of the cane on the hands. This is not a new thing but a revival of what was very common at the beginning of this year. In order to find out the truants, I require every absentee to produce a note from his parents. We look forward to hearing from you! Mrs Rolland and Miss Khimasia Did you put the e-safety meeting into your diary? If not, here’s your reminder. If you are not sure why it is important to attend, have a look at last week’s newsletter. In order to sort the chairs etc. we would be grateful if you would let us know if you will be attending by either completing and returning the slip below at the end of this newsletter or by sending in a short written note. Thank you. Prevention is so much better than cure. Please come along – the worst that can happen is that you waste an hour or so. The alternative doesn’t bear thinking about E-Safety Information Meeting: Wednesday 19th October 7pm Please note: Due to the content of this meeting, it is not appropriate to bring children to the meeting. Volunteers There will be another meeting for Volunteer Helpers on Monday 17th October at 9.15am. This is a repeat of the meeting held at the beginning of term and is for those volunteers that could not make the first date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Safety Information Meeting: Wednesday 19th October 7pm I would like to attend the E-Safety Information Meeting on Wednesday, 19th October at 7pm. My name is:………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..………………… My child/children is/are in class/es:……………………………………………………………………………………………………… Every month we will be learning about a different artist or musician. This month we will be looking at the artist who created this painting. Starry Night Do you know the name of the artist? What interesting facts can you find out about him/her? Can you create your own artwork in his/her style? If you do find out anything about him/her or you create any artwork just leave it in Ms Mayho’s pigeonhole. We’re hoping to create an online gallery on the School website! Reminder Victorian Dressing up day – Monday, 31st October - (Reception to Year 6) School Uniform Although the weather has remained quite bright and sunny, it is getting colder. Please ensure that your child has a jumper/cardigan in school and please note that winter uniform should be worn from straight after half term - i.e. no summer dresses please. Waterproof coats should be in school all year round, every day. Every item of clothing must be named. Ultrasport Clubs Just to confirm that there will be NO Ultrasport after school clubs (Dance, Multisports & Football) in the first week back after half term – the clubs will start up again the week commencing Monday, 7th November. Look out for signing up letters for the new block of sessions in your bookbags from the 31st October. Show Racism the Red Card Wear RED Day – Friday 21st October Racism affects everyone and continues to be an issue in our society with many adults and children suffering abuse on a daily basis. We want to show our support in challenging racism by ensuring the children at St Michael’s understand what racism is and how we can all play a part in eradicating it. If children want to show their support and commitment to stamping out racism, they may want to wear something RED (jumper, shirt, trousers, socks, pants, tie) teamed with their St. Michael’s uniform on Friday 21st October. If you or your child would like to make a donation to the Show Racism the RED Card anti-racism charity, please go to: www.theredcard.org Thank you. Mrs Betts-Hammond’s Science Question of the Week! (The answer will be hidden in the newsletter) Q. True or false? Sound travels faster through water than air? Second Hand Uniform Sale x 4! As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, there are second hand uniform sales scheduled for tonight and tomorrow after school in the quiet area. Also, on Thursday, 20th October, there will be an EYFS (Nursery and Reception) second hand uniform sale at 11:40am and again at 3:20pm outside Reception Red class. Operation Christmas Child Each year, together with St Michael’s Church, we participate in the Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’, where we ask families to consider putting together small Christmas gifts for young children in a shoebox. Leaflets detailing the requested contents of the shoeboxes will be sent out as soon as they arrive via the children’s bookbags and drop off details will be published in the newsletter shortly. Many thanks for your support! Y3/4 Quicksticks Hockey Festival at Southgate Hockey Club On Monday, we took part in the first Hockey Festival for Y3/4 and our team were amazing! We played six matches: W4, D1, L1 and we scored 16 goals along the way. We even became the team that other schools wanted to avoid playing in the last match! Well done to all team members - the Southgate Hockey Club coaches were particularly impressed by Alfie, Billy and Thomas' skills! Mr Floyd Y6 Football at Worcesters School On Tuesday, we played Worcesters School and won 4-0 (and so banished the demons of our first two fixtures)! Goals from Ronald (he was very happy to have scored his great header!), Danny and two from Kaya secured the victory. The team now takes its 'Winter Break' until the next fixtures in the spring. Mr Smith and Mr Floyd Shelter – helping homeless people If you would like to make a donation to the charity Shelter which supports homeless people, there is currently a collection box in the school office, many thanks. PTA News Quiz Night – this Saturday 15 October, 7:30pm onwards The questions are set, the bar is well stocked, the fish and chips (and veggie delights) will be cooked up on demand. We do have room to squeeze in a couple more tables, but we really do need all entries and payment in close of day tomorrow (Thursday 13 October) at the very latest. Thanks. PTA Survey Please look out for our PTA online survey – a link to this will be sent out by email later this week. Your views are really important to us and it would be wonderful to get a good response rate to this survey. St Michael’s Camping Trip, 10 June 2017 Thank you to everyone who has returned a booking form. The popularity of this event has been exceptional and we will definitely be taking over Dobb’s Weir exclusively for St Michael’s families in June next year. Although we cannot meet all the requests for pre-pitched at present, we are exploring options to increase the numbers available. We will be emailing everyone later this week with the outcome of their booking requests. Christmas Fayre Advertising Boards Equity Estate Agents have kindly agreed to sponsor our Christmas Fayre and are going to pay £15 each for up to 50 advertising boards, and £20 each for any over 50. If we get the same number of volunteers as the Summer Fayre, this could raise over £1,000 for the school before the fayre has even started! All you need to do is complete the tear off slip below and a board will be put up outside your property two weeks before the Fayre and removed one week afterwards. If you live in a flat or a house, you can put your name down for a board. You can even nominate friends and family as long as you have their permission. Please help us by completing the tear off slip below and return it to the school office in an enveloped labelled “Christmas Fayre Boards.” Thank you. Alternatively – you can just email your address details to [email protected] or if you gave us your details for the Summer Fayre, just let a member of the PTA or your PTA class rep know that you are happy to have another board.
