York’s Biggest Morning Tea
Linda & Leigh Thompson of Thompsons
Funeral Services York hosted Cancer
Council’s York’s 2016 Biggest Morning Tea
at the York Recreation Centre on Saturday
21st May 2016 from 9.30am – 1pm.
Despite it being very wet and windy, the
York community braved the weather and
showed very strong support for this charity
event, a total amount has not been finalised
until the end of May, but it will be approx.
$2400.
Over 40 York businesses donated prizes on
the day as well as a number of local people
donating prizes. These prizes were raffled
and there were also prizes that were
auctioned on the day. The major prize was
accommodation and breakfast package at
the International on the Water Hotel,
Belmont.
There was an array of delicious food, lots of
people attending the day including a
number of men which was really great to
see. There were two international stars
who did a Neil Diamond and Whitney
Houston Tribute show at 12 noon providing
some great entertainment for those in
attendance.
York CRC Vision/Mission

and great feedback.

9.30 Every Sunday - a time of
worship, friendship and planning for
our activities.
A warm welcome to all who come.
The Open Day was on 14th May with a good exhibition of heritage photos and
art, Ken Emberson lead people around the Tipperary School Museum and
Sheryl Russo and others helped with selling books and introducing people to
the Archives and Research Centre. Finishing with wine and cheese at 4.00
pm with guests from the Men’s Shed and some certificates of appreciation. A
lot of energy for rather a small number of visitors, rather a pity, something to
be thought about before our next activities.
I attended a day about “An Irish Orphan’s Odyssey” on 8th May at The York
Residency Museum. A fine example of what can be done with some history
and planning by a collaborative group of people from York and Ireland. A fine
display of Mary Marwick’s life by the Executive of The Residency Museum.
The Book “Mary Marwick of York” a significant addition to the Marwick Series.
The Heritage Bush Dance on the 21st May was a fine night for all, an example
of the fine dances of earlier times and still as much fun today for everyone in
the hall, with the exception of one poor soul with a fractured hip who said to
me that she will be back next year.
The Mucky Duck Bush Band in its 44th year (now called the Fiddlestix Bush
Band at times) is vibrant and vital and setting such a pace to the fun it was
hard for me to get in to the microphone to give words of thanks and a few
prizes. Thanks for the impressive prizes from: The Castle Hotel  Elders

I attended a meeting with Paul Martin new CEO, 24th May. A useful hour with
a focus on collaboration and getting York functioning and positive. All
organisations need to work hard to reinforce some pride in the place and
people of York.

Support for Supreme
Australian Sheepdog
Championships needed,
Davies
Local MP Hon Mia Davies MLA is
hoping country communities in the
agricultural region will dig deep to
support a unique event and support
the volunteer Committee who are
working hard to bring an international event to Northam.
The Supreme Australian Sheepdog
Championships are being hosted in
Western Australia this year with the
week-long event to be held in Northam.
Ms Davies met with Grass Valley
farmer and Supreme Australian
Sheepdog Championships subcommittee chair Grant Cooke to discuss options for covering the final
$15,000 required to underwrite the
event.
“The event at Henry Street Oval is
expected to attract up to 300 dogs
and their owners, who will be travelling from all over Western Australia,
Australia and New Zealand to compete,’ Ms Davies said.
“Donations will assist the subcommittee
secure
livestock
transport, accommodation and car
hire for international competitors and
cover general event running costs.”
Ms Davies said other funding mechanisms for the week-long event,
which will be a boon for Northam’s
economy and community, had been
exhausted so the committee was
turning to the public for support.
“Having some of the world’s top
working dogs in action will be a huge
drawcard for the Avon Valley,” she
said.
“To risk losing such a spectacle from
a small funding shortfall would be a
tremendous shame.”
Mr Cooke, who is Vice-President of
Australian Sheepdog Workers Association and will be the Australian
team captain at the trans-Tasman
event said every donation would
help.
“This really is the pinnacle of our
sport – being selected to represent
Australia and then compete against
our cousins from across the Tasman
is what we strive for,” he said.
“The competition between Australia
and New Zealand is always red hot
and it is no different in sheepdog trials, but we also need to make sure
our rivals enjoy a comfortable stay in
Northam and can reflect on a memorable event.
“Any help would be greatly appreciated by all involved and ensure the
2016 Supreme Australian Sheepdog
Championships goes down in history
as one of the best.”

History of York Rose
“The White Rose of York a white heraldic rose, is the symbol of the House
of York and has since been adopted as a symbol of Yorkshire as a whole.
The actual symbolism behind the rose has religious connotations as it
represents the Virgin Mary, who is often called the Mystical Rose of Heaven. The
Yorkist rose is white in colour, because in Christian liturgical symbolism, white is
the symbol of light, typifying innocence and purity, joy and glory.”

The white York Rose has been adopted by many cities and towns throughout
the world as their symbol.

Our May meeting was held at the home of Brian Harffey and Kevin Allester.
Thank you very much for your warm welcome to your attractive garden. During
the 10 years Brian and Kevin have lived at Corella House, as their property is
called, (no prizes for guessing why) they have achieved much. The roses were
out in full bloom. Something you might like to try, Brian and Kevin have Bali
flags fluttering in the breeze, which not only add interest to the garden, but
also keep away the parrots. They have many interesting things round the
garden, including a gazebo which has wrought iron the same pattern as the
Imperial Hotel.
After the 2011 storm they found they had all sorts of plants popping up in the
garden, including several peppercorn trees.

Our recent Bus Trip.
Some of our members enjoyed a bus trip in April to 3 locations. The first
was the North Perth Community Garden. With the help of the GPS we finally
found the garden. The garden has several individual plots and three
communal garden beds. They mainly grow vegetables, herbs and some
flowers. They also have a small orchard. There are 2
active worm farms and an extensive compost
project. Two of the staff were on hand and gave us a
tour and information regarding the garden. They
also provided us with a delicious morning tea.
We were spoilt for choice of where to have our lunch
in Guildford. Following lunch we explored Guildford
Nursery for something we might like to take home.
Quite a few purchases were made. Following a little
sightseeing around Guildford, thanks to our driver
Alan Hucker, we headed for Chartwell Gardens in
Mundaring. The garden was totally amazing and
Susan had completed it in a short 9 years. Hidden
behind a large stand of pine trees were several rose
beds, a pergola covered with wisteria and lots of pockets of different plants.
The beautiful old stone house was covered with Virginia creeper which was
just starting to change colour. Scattered throughout the garden were
several whimsical statues adding an extra interest. Worth a mention was a
LARGE elephant in chicken wire which was covered with miniature maiden
hair fern.
A big thank you goes to Alan for ferrying us around for the day.
