ACCELERATING HOPE 2014 ANNUAL REPORT Every 7 minutes someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with lymphoma There are more than 700,000 people in the U.S. living with lymphoma There are more than 70 subtypes of lymphoma Sadly, 20,170 people in the U.S. die from lymphoma each year LETTER FROM CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear Friends, Each year, more than 80,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with lymphoma. That translates to one American being diagnosed every seven minutes. The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) is committed to serving all of those whose lives have been affected by a lymphoma diagnosis, while determinedly working to find a cure through an inventive research program. We have witnessed tremendous progress in the field of lymphoma research over the course of the past year. Each new drug approval, improved therapy, and scientific advancement points to the possibilities before us and hope for future discovery. LRF-funded research in areas such as treatment pathways, novel therapies for both aggressive and indolent forms of the disease, and prognostic indicators and biomarkers have the potential to change the existing standard of care and improve the lives of patients everywhere. You will read about some of these innovative research projects in this year’s annual report. The ingenuity and reach of our education programming and resources, bringing these advancements to patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals, ensures we transport these innovations from the laboratory bench to the bedside. None of this progress would be possible without the support of our many donors, volunteers and partners. You have enabled us to make great advances over the past 20 years, and provided a foundation upon which we can pursue our shared mission. The Lymphoma Research Foundation’s ability to meet the evolving needs of patients and survivors and to invest in the most promising lymphoma research is made possible through your generous commitment. As we mark the conclusion of a year of unprecedented advancement, we reflect both on the progress made and the work yet to be done. We must remain steadfast in our efforts until we can say that every seven minutes someone is cured of lymphoma. Steven J. Prince Chairman of the Board Meghan E. Gutierrez Chief Executive Officer 2014 Annual Report 1 ACCELERATING RESEARCH This past year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an unprecedented number of lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) drugs. Many of these new treatment options represent the first drugs approved in many years, and in some cases decades, for certain subtypes of these diseases. During this time of great promise and hope for lymphoma research, the Lymphoma Research Foundation continued to meaningfully impact the field by leading the way in investing in the future. Since its inception, the Lymphoma Research Foundation has been a pioneer in funding only the most promising research proposals; ideas that have the greatest ability to positively impact the field and move the research agenda forward in a way that benefits the greatest number of patients. Through our unique commitment to young investigators, we ensure that the best and brightest young minds are focused on studying lymphoma. We have already seen the impact of this research on the lives of patients and their families: LRF’s Young Investigator Grantees are playing critical roles in the development of cutting edge treatment options. The Lymphoma Research Foundation is committed to providing young hematologists/oncologists with as many opportunities to grow and develop as possible through a variety of avant-garde programs. 2 Lymphoma Research Foundation The Lymphoma Clinical Research Mentoring Program (LCRMP) is one such initiative that has become a hallmark of LRF’s innovative approach to research. LCRMP offers mentoring and education to hematology/oncology fellows and junior faculty dedicated to clinical research in non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphoma. Program participants, called LRF Scholars, attend and participate in a week-long intensive introductory workshop and follow-up programming intended to enhance the ability of the LRF Scholars to successfully design and administer clinical research studies and successfully secure future grant funding. This unique program is designed to leverage the vast experience of the Foundation’s world renowned Scientific Advisory Board to ensure that the next generation of lymphoma investigators can continue to meaningfully impact the field. In addition to Young Investigator Grants, LRF is also proud to offer Disease-Specific Focus Area grants, given to senior researchers studying specific subtypes and/or patient populations, including but not limited to: • Adolescent/young adult (AYA) lymphomas • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) • Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) • Follicular lymphoma (FL) • Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) 2014 Annual Report 3 ACCELERATING RESEARCH (CONTINUED) In FY14, the Lymphoma Research Foundation awarded grants to the following investigators committed to the study of lymphoma: Laura Belver, PhD, The Role of NOTCH1 in CLL Joshua Brody, MD, LRF Scholar, Development of Phase I-II CDZ301+ polyICLC for iNHL Ryan Cassady, MD, LRF Scholar, Safety and Efficacy of Brentuximab Vedotin Added to ICE for Relapsed/ Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma Jonathon Cohen, MD, LRF Scholar, Post-transplant Lenalidomide Maintenance in Mantle Cell Lymphoma Alexey Danilov, MD, Pharmacologic Reprogramming of the Microenvironment Signaling in CLL Joseph Dekker, PhD, The Role of the FOXP1 Transcription Factor in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Catherine Diefenbach, MD, A Novel Multimodality Immune-based Treatment Platform in Advanced Mycosis Fungoides Anita Kumar, MD, LRF Scholar, Randomized Phase II Study of Brentuximab Vendotin + Chemotherapy vs. Brentuximab Vendotin + Chemoradiotherapy Catherine Lai, MD, LRF Scholar, Short Course EPOCH-RR for Germinal Center Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Rui Lu, PhD, Novel Approaches for Efficient and Tissue-specific Inhibition of EZH2/1 Hyperactivity in Lymphomas Feilong Meng, PhD, Mechanisms of ActivationInduced Cytidine Deaminase Targeting in Germinal Center Oreofe Odejide, MD, Processes and Outcomes of End-of-Life Care for Lymphoid Malignancies Deborah Stevens, MD, LRF Scholar, A Phase II Clinical Trial of KPT-330 in Patients with Richter’s Transformation. 4 Lymphoma Research Foundation Therapies continue to become more targeted and tolerable for lymphoma patients. Researchers are also refining diagnostic and prognostic standards, combating drug resistance, and seeking standards of care that improve patients’ quality of life while reducing risk and toxicity. We are now also seeing the advances surrounding oral agents being leveraged to treat a variety of the subtypes of lymphoma. Through the extensive research made possible by the Lymphoma Research Foundation and its supporters, the medical community now has a better understanding of molecular pathways, which are essentially the switches that turn lymphoma cells on or off. Understanding these pathways is critical and has already led to the development of new or improved treatment options for patients and caregivers. All of these novel treatment options represent an exciting and historic step forward in our mission to eradicate lymphoma. LRF remains dedicated to identifying a cure for lymphoma through our research program. To-date, the Foundation has funded more than $55 million and currently has $11.6 million invested in active lymphoma research. The research funded by the Lymphoma Research Foundation is an important driver of hope, not only for patients and their families, but also for healthcare professionals working diligently to find a cure. “My chronic lymphocytic leukemia journey began in 2009 with a watch and wait approach, delaying treatment as long as possible to let better treatments develop. I helped by raising funds through the LRF Research Ride and volunteering as an LRF Ambassador. The waiting strategy paid off—research has moved faster than I ever imagined. Although I now require treatment, I’m participating in a clinical trial for a new, super targeted drug that was just a hope when I started this journey. Thank you, LRF! ” — Geoff Grubbs CLL Survivor Washington, DC 2014 Annual Report 5 ”I was fortunate to be a member of LRF’s inaugural Lymphoma Clinical Research Mentoring Program (LCRMP), which provided an educational foundation for clinical investigation, career development advice, and mentorship during my fellowship. During the course of the program, I greatly benefitted from the collective wisdom from lymphoma experts across multiple institutions on many topics including clinical trial design, grant writing and building a research team. I am grateful for the ongoing mentoring relationships with leaders in lymphoma research across the country. Due to the skills I learned through the clinical mentoring program, I recently was able to secure an LRF Career Development Award, which is very important for my early career development. I do believe my application was greatly improved because of the advice and insights I received during the LCRMP workshop. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the LCRMP and it has already proven to be successful for my lymphoma career.” — Anita Kumar, MD LRF Scholar and Assistant Attending Physician at Memorial Sloan Kettering-Cancer Center New York, NY 6 Lymphoma Research Foundation $55 million invested in lymphoma research to-date $11.6 million in active lymphoma research grants 45 world leading lymphoma experts comprise LRF’s Scientific Advisory Board 2014 Annual Report 7 ACCELERATING OPTIMAL PATIENT CARE A key part of the LRF mission is to better serve those affected by the disease. The Lymphoma Research Foundation places great importance on the role of professional education in ensuring that all medical professionals are able to provide evidence-based care to their patients. Understanding our role as the premier convening entity in the lymphoma community, we continue to offer a wide range of lymphoma-focused educational activities designed to increase the knowledge, skills and performance of healthcare professionals and to maximize the quality of care for all lymphoma patients. For years, LRF has brought together the top minds in the oncology community for our in-person continuing medical education meetings, including our renowned Lymphoma Rounds and Caring for the 8 Lymphoma Research Foundation Lymphoma Patient programs. Through the Lymphoma Rounds program, healthcare professionals network, share best practices and learn the latest information on new therapies and advances in the management of lymphoma through interactive case studies presented by lymphoma experts in the area. Similarly, Caring for the Lymphoma Patient meetings allow nurses to learn from and network with their peers in a collaborative environment in an effort to improve care for patients across the country. The Lymphoma Research Foundation’s professional education programs aim to ensure that healthcare professionals are able to provide their patients with the most up-to-date and effective treatments possible. 2014 Annual Report 9 “When we started the Lymphoma Rounds program in Chicago more than five years ago, our goal was simply to help keep the professional community abreast of developments in the realm of treating blood cancers. The hope was that we could provide better care for patients by keeping our colleagues updated on major progress occurring rapidly in lymphomas. Over the years, however, the Lymphoma Rounds program has blossomed and is occurring in major cities throughout the country and has evolved into a hallmark professional education event for the entire hematology community; a true marketplace of ideas for leading minds to challenge themselves, to grow and to better care for lymphoma patients; and for that, we have LRF to thank.” Stephanie A. Through the LRF Advocacy Program, the Foundation provides a platform for patients, families, and medical advocates to educate and influence key decision makers. The Lymphoma Research Foundation and its network of more than 5,000 advocates have been on the forefront of the push to attain the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s “breakthrough therapy” designation, and in 2014, the effects of the new classification began to bear fruit. The breakthrough designation label, intended to speed the development of and access to the most critical, life-saving drugs, resulted in the expedited approval of many new lymphoma treatments. We now have new front line treatment options available for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), as well as novel options for patients with relapsed or refractory disease in CLL, peripheral T-cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma— all which came to market as a result of this new FDA categorization. For patients with particular subsets of lymphoma, we now are able to provide hope where there once was none. 12 Lymphoma Research Foundation (CONTINUED) In an effort to leverage LRF’s policy expertise and capitalize on the shared mission of partner patient advocacy groups, the Foundation also developed the Lymphoma Education and Advocacy Partners, or LEAP, program. This coalition of likeminded organizations is dedicated to nurturing a public policy environment that has the greatest potential to impact funding for lymphoma research and support for the policies that directly impact members of the lymphoma community. Joining together with the Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation (CLF), the International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation (IWMF), the T-cell Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation (TCLLF) and The Double Hit Lymphoma Foundation (TDHLF), the Lymphoma Research Foundation was able to lead a reinforced charge on a national level around cancer care planning, lymphoma clinical trials, and oral chemotherapy parity as centerpieces of our policy priorities in 2014. The momentous efforts we’ve taken in accelerating better care for patients stem from our commitment to those we serve every day. The trust that our constituents have placed in us is not one we take lightly, evident in our continued advocacy efforts. As federal funding for research decreases, the role of patient advocacy efforts becomes increasingly important in our efforts to provide hope to all those affected by this disease. “Through my legislation, the Planning Actively for Cancer Treatment (PACT) Act, I have been honored to work with the Lymphoma Research Foundation to improve access to quality cancer care planning for all patients affected by a cancer diagnosis. I am proud to stand with the Foundation as we work together to accelerate hope for more people.” – U.S. Representative Lois Capps (D-CA) 2014 2014 Annual Annual Report Report 13 14 Lymphoma Research Foundation ACCELERATING LYMPHOMA EDUCATION Empowering patients to have the knowledge needed to become their own health advocate has always been central to the Foundation’s mission and the need for timely and comprehensive information has never been more critical. With the pace of lymphoma discoveries accelerating, the need to provide accurate and timely information to patients has never been greater. In 2014, the Lymphoma Research Foundation expanded its educational resources for lymphoma patients, families and caregivers. The Foundation’s in-person education programs, one of the hallmarks of the organization, are an important way for those affected by lymphoma to learn about the disease and to take an active role in their own health care. LRF education programs reach people in 65 different countries, and LRF has a presence in all 50 states including the District of Columbia. Each year, more than 70,000 people benefit from LRF patient programs and services and LRF’s digital resources are accessed by more than 1 million people annually. Understanding that lymphoma is an extraordinarily complex group of diseases, LRF’s helpline staff equips thousands of people each year with the appropriate educational materials and answers regarding their particular lymphoma diagnosis and treatment options. The Helpline’s trained staff members are available to answer questions and provide individual support regarding information on diagnosis, types of lymphomas, treatment options, potential side effects, and up-to-date research findings; referrals to financial assistance programs, legal and insurance help; and clinical trial searches based on the patient’s diagnosis and treatment history. Access to accurate and up-to date information is a critical part of the lymphoma journey. Education can be one of the most empowering things for a patient and his / her family. Education can provide context, options, and most importantly, hope for all of those affected by lymphoma. 2014 Annual Report 15 “LRF has provided the basis for research advancements, patient support and education that has dramatically changed the way lymphoma patients navigate their disease today versus 20 years ago when I was first diagnosed—giving patients a more hopeful outlook than ever before. Due to all of the progress we have made in the last two decades, when my lymphoma recently relapsed there were new treatment options, targeted therapies, and more tolerable medications available. Perhaps most importantly though, this time, there was the Lymphoma Research Foundation.” — Jerry Freundlich Co-founder of the Lymphoma Research Foundation and Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Survivor New York, NY 16 Lymphoma Research Foundation lymphoma.org 1,000,000 people accessed the Foundation’s website in FY14 70,000 individuals served by LRF education programs and services in FY14 6,175 people participated in a live educational program in FY14 2014 Annual Report 17 ACCELERATING LYMPHOMA EDUCATION (CONTINUED) LRF provides materials in a variety of forms so that people can access information in whichever way they learn best. This has enabled the Foundation to have disease information at the fingertips of more people than ever before. Whether through in-person programs, podcasts, teleconferences, booklets and factsheets, disease specific websites or social media, LRF has played a vital role in advancing how people learn about and manage their lymphoma. The Foundation has been a leader in providing information to those affected by lymphoma across all mediums. The app provides users with the ability to quickly and easily tap into the wealth of resources offered by the Foundation, while also giving them the tools needed to effectively manage their disease.” — Ann LaCasce, MD Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Boston, MA 20 Lymphoma Research Foundation “I discovered the Lymphoma Research Foundation when I was searching on my phone for disease information—and it changed my life. I don’t know what my family and I would have done if it wasn’t for the Lymphoma Research Foundation. We would literally be lost.” — Lauren Greene Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Survivor Roseville, CA 2014 Annual Report 21 ACCELERATING LYMPHOMA AWARENESS Each year, approximately 67,000 adolescents and young adults are diagnosed with cancer—and 1 out of every 5 of those diagnoses is lymphoma. To raise awareness of lymphoma among this cohort and to better support this traditionally underserved population, the Lymphoma Research Foundation launched its first-ever Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Initiative in 2014. The four major pillars of the initiative include a national AYA-targeted marketing and communications campaign; unique educational and supportive care programming; research initiative; and public policy and advocacy effort. Communicating the unique needs of the AYA lymphoma population is an important first step toward increasing public and professional awareness and encouraging people to take action to change the future for those affected by lymphoma. The initiative’s marketing and communications campaign will raise awareness about lymphoma and its prevalence, particularly among 18-39 year olds, while emphasizing the need for accurate and timely diagnoses for the AYA population. A longstanding priority for the Foundation is to educate patients, caregivers and health care providers about the unique needs of those individuals who receive a lymphoma diagnosis. This effort can be complicated for the AYA population, who may receive a delayed diagnosis and be unfamiliar with the health care system. To address these challenges, the Foundation will create a tool kit that can be utilized by patients, caregivers, health care providers and college health systems that can assist AYA lymphoma patients 22 Lymphoma Research Foundation navigate their diagnosis, treatment planning and transition to long-term survivorship. As part of the initiative, LRF will also seek to prioritize and contribute to the body of evidence on the treatment of AYA lymphoma patients by developing a correlative clinical/translational grant opportunity to study AYA lymphomas. The goal of the new grant program will be to fund adjunct studies to complement and synergize with ongoing lymphoma clinical trials within the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Cooperative Groups. Grant applications will be required to clearly focus on lymphoma research and have a high degree of relevance to research questions pertinent to AYA lymphomas. Grantees will be selected by the Foundation’s expert Scientific Advisory Board, utilizing a peer-review process based upon the model used by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). For the Public Policy and Advocacy pillar, LRF will work in partnership with members of the United States Congress to ensure that elected officials understand the challenges faced by AYA patients and make their needs a national priority. The Foundation’s Adolescent and Young Adult Initiative is supported by The Paul Foundation, Founding Sponsor of the initiative, as well as national sponsors that include The Ferriday Fund Charitable Trust, Genentech, and Teva Oncology. Through this initiative, the Lymphoma Research Foundation and its partners seek to provide hope to all those affected by lymphoma and change the future for young adults faced with this disease. “The Paul Foundation is the brainchild of my darling son, Paul Walker Schaffel who had the presence of mind before he died to ask his family to establish a foundation whose mission was to prevent what happened to him as a young adult with lymphoma from happening to anyone else. The natural outgrowth of Paul’s selfless wish is the establishment of the Adolescent and Young Adult Initiative (“AYAI”) with our dedicated and knowledgeable partner LRF. The AYAI multi-disciplinary approach will provide healthcare professionals, family members and others with the necessary tools to bring Paul’s wish to fruition. The Paul Foundation’s commitment to AYAI is unwavering as we believe it will indeed give families and young adult patients with lymphoma hope for their future, and the compassionate care each young adult so deserves.” — Ellen M. Walker, Esq. Chair of the Board of The Paul Foundation . 2014 Annual Report 23 “I always thought that lymphoma was something that only affected people when they were older—but that is a big misconception. Since being diagnosed in my 20s, I’ve noticed a major disconnect between the public perception of what the ‘lymphoma community’ looks like demographically and who I see struggle with the disease every day. I am living proof of both the benefit of lymphoma awareness in the young adult community and the impact of the Lymphoma Research Foundation’s support and resources for young patients; I am confident that together, we can erase lymphoma!” — Erica Campbell Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivor Washington, DC 24 Lymphoma Research Foundation “I was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma when I was just 20 years old and I am currently in my fourth bout with the disease. I know firsthand the importance of raising awareness of lymphoma and its prevalence, especially among young adults. As I continue to fight for remission and ultimately a cure, I remain hopeful knowing that LRF is in my corner through it all.” – Anthony Daniels Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivor Ridgewood, New Jersey 7MINUTES EVERY SOMEONE IN THE U.S. IS DIAGNOSED WITH LYMPHOMA lymphoma.org 25 ACCELERATING LYMPHOMA AWARENESS (CONTINUED) The lymphoma community is an incredibly strong and resilient one: every day, we see the impact that sharing stories of strength have on the outlook of the patients we serve. With the belief that awareness leads to hope, LRF cemented itself further as a leader in raising public awareness of lymphoma in 2014. Through traditional, digital and innovative communications and outreach strategies, the Foundation seeks to put disease information at the fingertips of more people than ever before. If we hope to be successful in our long-term goal of eradicating lymphoma, the dialogue around the disease needs to be pervasive; it is only after we get people talking about lymphoma that we can get them talking about how to end it. Distinguished events such as our Annual Gala, South Florida Fashion Luncheon and Golf Event furthered their place as hallmarks of the LRF 26 Lymphoma Research Foundation identity. Active-lifestyle events like our Lymphoma Walks and Research Ride inspired thousands to join LRF’s movement, all while raising critical funds to support LRF’s mission. LRF’s Giving Tuesday campaign and award-winning Twitter chat expanded the Foundation’s reach into the digital world, allowing us to engage new audiences and potential advocates. Major national awareness campaigns such as Light it Red for Lymphoma during Blood Cancer Awareness Month helped put both lymphoma and the Lymphoma Research Foundation firmly into the popular discourse and the national medical dialogue. The underlying thread among all of our outreach remains the goal of putting the most vital information into the hands of the people who need it the most. We envision a lymphoma community that doesn’t just grow in size, but grows in strength. We know that the way to ensure this hopeful future is through awareness and fundraising. R “Pacific Science Center has been proud to Light it Red for Lymphoma for the past two years. Participating in this important campaign not only sheds a light on lymphoma, but gives people hope. My mother found the Lymphoma Research Foundation online and signed us up for our local Walk. The Lymphoma Walk in my hometown was an amazing gift to my family and me. My mom met other survivors and even other mothers whose children were doing well. The Walk gave my mother and I hope, as we saw so many people who were living and even thriving after their lymphoma diagnosis, we knew I would, too!” — Dexter Neal, Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivor, Texas Ms. Sandra Berry Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J Bertino Mr. Kevin Beverly Ms. Annabelle Bexiga Mr. Jeffrey Block and Ms. Michele Gerus Ms. Nancy S.
