@KCJSWimbledon JUNIOR VIEWS NEWSLETTER FRIDAY 17 March 2017 #354 The Wizard of Oz King’s College Junior School Southside Wimbledon Common London SW194TT +44(20)8255 5335 www.kcs.org.uk [email protected] The production of The Wizard of Oz has been performed this week by a cast of fifty boys from Priory. After five months of rehearsing and a long technical rehearsal over the weekend, the stage came alive on Monday for the first performance to Rushmere. Brightly coloured Munchkins appeared behind umbrellas, Jitterbugs danced with energy and Dorothy and her trio of companions followed the yellow brick road to Emerald City. This has been a fantastic production with the boys showing enormous talent, commitment and energy. S c i e n c e Waiting for the Mars lecture! W e e k 2017 TB’s Science Assembly The theme of this year’s Science Week was Life and on Monday all the boys in Priory took part in the Science quiz and now look forward to the results announcement in the final assembly of the term. On Wednesday, Mr Baker and TB presented a Science assembly and quiz. At lunchtime, the boys in the Third Form were able to make grass seed heads and on Thursday, Mr Hipkiss presented a lecture focusing on Can We Live on Mars? The photography competition is still running and Mr Hipkiss is looking forward to receiving plenty of entries after the Easter break. Making grass seed heads! S w i m m i n g This week has been a busy time for the Junior School swim squad, with thirty U8-13 boys travelling to Parkside on Monday and then U12 and U13 boys travelling to Wimbledon College on Wednesday. The gala on Monday was against two strong schools, Parkside and Feltonfleet, and a special mention must go out to the Second Form boys William, Alex,Virgile and Cassius who did not lose a race all evening. I have to say the boys’ performances were outstanding with King’s finishing second in the overall standings only six points behind Parkside. Then on Wednesday evening we swam brilliantly at Wimbledon College. The boys did not lose one relay the whole evening which is an outstanding team effort and we managed to win the gala by ten points. Windsor House U13 House Football Champions F r o m t h e T o uc h l i n e Our week in sport begins last Friday when every boy in the Second Form was given the opportunity to play in the rearranged fixture versus Cranmore. Whilst the A team found the going very tough, B-G teams had a great afternoon with a combination of some great passing rugby and very tough tackling. Mr Roberts was especially pleased with his B team performance who inflicted Cranmore Bs’ first defeat of the season. Sunday saw the U13 sevens squad have their second outing of the term at the nationally renowned Berkhamsted Festival. The boys went into the day full of confidence after achieving 8 wins from 8 a couple of weeks ago at CLFS, but after an opening masterclass by Kirkham Grammar in the rain, there was much soul searching to be done. However, resilience has been key amongst these boys, and five victories later, the smiles had returned! A super day and a really well organised event. There was little break for the Upper Removes as we sent A-E teams over to Hampton for some football fixtures on Monday. Many players found themselves in higher teams due to the busy life of the school, and the challenge was always going to be tough – a 2-2 draw in the As and a narrow 2-1 defeat in the Cs were the highlights of the afternoon’s play, but a great experience to get so many boys out playing and representing the school. A new opposition for rugby travelled over to King’s on Tuesday when Harrodian brought three teams to play our A, C, and Es in the U11 age group – a year group that have had numerous cancellations. All three fixtures were keenly contested with Harrodian certainly bringing some raw athleticism to the battle. King’s finished on top across the board, but this will be a fixture we pursue for the future. Earlier that day, the U9 machine continued their success with some convincing displays against King’s House, and it was great to see our Gs and Hs take on their Ds and Es – the type of challenge our boys love! This Saturday sees 5 King’s teams entered into the Surrey Festival at Cranmore School on what should be a fantastic day of rugby with England securing the Grand Slam in Dublin!! Word of the week: carnage – The violent killing of a large number of people. From the Latin caro (= “flesh”). More cheerfully, this Latin word may also give us the word carnival with the word relating to the giving up (levare) of meat for Lent.
