Isaac Newton and New Inventions

Lesson Title:
Isaac Newton and New Inventions
(See textbook pages 362-363)
Which of these shapes reflects no color and
which combines and reflects all colors?
White is the sum of all colors, while black is the
absence of color—according to Isaac Newton.
During the Scientific Revolution, Sir Isaac Newton
discovered that white light is made up of all colors.
How do you think he made this discovery?
Among the scientists of the Scientific Revolution,
the greatest was Sir Isaac Newtown.
Newton is called the father of physics. He was also a
brilliant mathematician.
In class reading activity
Partner read “Sir Isaac Newton” including his biography
on page 362. Use the strip sticky notes to cite evidence to
support your answer. Then, answer the questions in
your notebook.
1. List 4 of Newton’s accomplishments.
2. Why were Newton’s theories called laws?
3. How did Newton understand the universe and the
way it worked? (What did he compare the universe
to?)
Newton’s four natural laws are probably his greatest
contribution to science. The laws help explain how
the world works.
Law of Gravity: Every particle attracts every other
particle with a force that is proportional to their
masses and inversely proportional to the distance
between them.
3 Laws of Motion
The first law says that an object at rest tends to stay at
rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion.
The second law shows that if you exert the same force
on two objects of different mass, you will get different
accelerations (the smaller one will move faster).
The third law says that for every action (force) there is
an equal and opposite reaction (force).
Can you give examples of each law?
In class reading activity #2
Read “New Inventions” on page 363.
Create and complete this table:
Invention in the
Scientific Revolution
Who invented it or
improved it
Why it is important
2. Which invention do you believe is most important,
and why?
Inventions of the Scientific Revolution
A
B
C
D
Which is the telescope, thermometer, barometer, and
microscope?
Inventions of the Scientific Revolution
Imagine that one of these were never invented. Which
would be the most devastating to live without? Why?
Right Side Notebook Activity
Many scientists believe that Isaac Newton was
the greatest scientist of all time.
Determine the central ideas about Isaac Newton on
page 362 by designing a monument for Isaac
Newton. Sketch a statute, building or other object to
remember him and his contribution to science.
Below the monument create a plaque to summarize
key information:
• Born, died
• Famous for…
• Remembered for…
• Greatest achievement…
