Anne Frank
9 Activities
With Choice Board Option
Teacher’s Guide
Thank you for having a look at this preview or for purchasing this
product. “Anne Frank: 9 Activities with Choice Board Option” is a collection of 9 activities
shown on a “choice board” designed in a tic-tac-toe format. How the classroom teacher
decides to use the choice board is up to him or her; students could be assigned to complete
3 in any direction, or even all 9 over the course of the unit. I have also included the nine activities in an unnumbered format so that they can be used without the choice board. Most
of the activities can be completed even if students have not read The Diary of Anne Frank,
but they should at least have read or be encouraged to read some excerpts. This resource
complements my resource “5 Days with Anne Frank” (which consists of four informational
texts, a multiple choice test, and a word use activity). The two items are also offered as a
bundle at a discounted price.
The nine activities found in this resource are:
1. Research Activity: The German Invasion of Holland (the Netherlands): students complete a
one page organizer using online resources (see below):
2. Diaries, Biographies, and Memoirs: A writing activity in which students describe the
difference between diaries, biographies, and memoirs. Includes a writing prompt asking
whose diary, biography, or memoir they would like to read and why;
3. Anne’s Childhood and Her Family: Students research Anne’s childhood and her
relationship with family members, also includes an opinion question;
4. Website Evaluation: Students evaluate the website www.annefrank.org - four questions
that are subjective in nature;
5. Anne’s Diary: Before and After You Read. Students should have read at least some
excerpts from the diary to complete this activity;
6. Adolf Hitler Organizer: Students complete a one-page organizer about Hitler - includes
some vocabulary terms as well;
7. The Secret Annex: A writing activity; Students research facts about the Annex and express
their opinions about what it would have been like to live there;
8. Words within Words Puzzle: Students find words within the phrase “The Secret Annex” - two
clues are provided for a couple of longer words;
9. Interviewing Anne Frank: Students create 5 questions with topics provided that they would
ask Anne if she were alive today.
Activities #1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8 include Answer Keys.

During World War II
Canada gave Princess
Juliana, the future
monarch of Holland, a
safe place to live during
the war. Juliana and her
family arrived in Canada
after the Germans
occupied their country in
May, 1940. The princess
already had two little
girls and soon a third
daughter, Margriet, was
born in Ottawa, Canada’s
capital city. The hospital
room she was born in was
officially declared Dutch
territory just for her birth!
The Dutch have another
reason to love Canada:
in 1945 Canadian Allied
troops liberated Holland
from German occupation.
