The following collection is a testament to the power of one individual. Over the course of his life,
Alfonse R. Mancini strove to collect everything he could related to World War I, though his main
interests were women and African Americans during the war, and the role of engineering in warfare,
specifically that of aircraft and automobiles. In his search, he amassed an impressive library.
All the standard works are here, along with a respectable number of unit histories, war magazines,
and original posters. But he did not stop at the obvious. Many works included in his personal library
peripherally relate to the war - novels set during the conflict; alternate histories; local histories
embracing the years during which the war took place; etc.
Part of the joy of working through a collection such as this is piecing together the various
connections the collector drew between items, and this is no exception. In the simple act of
cataloging, a much clearer picture of the conflict then known as The Great War has coalesced in our
minds. A picture that informs our ideas of what life was like 100 years ago, who fought in the war
and why, and what we should take away from this era in history.
As any well-constructed collection should be, this is a time capsule.
What is also striking here is the presence of several overlapping enthusiasms. While the focus is
World War I, quite a few works dealing with the American Civil War and World War II are present.
Aviation and other technologies are also strongly represented. And, unlike some collections, there
was no limit to the medium (see below).

mainly of books, magazines, and war posters. A link at the end of the catalog will direct you to the

The Electric Automobile: Its Construction, Care and Operation
Herbert S. Stone & Company / R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company at The Lakeside
Press, Chicago, 1900. viii, 177 pp. First edition. Boards lightly rubbed, ink name & date
on front endpaper, along with presentation note to Ray H. Manson dated July 1900.
Manson was at the time working at the Electrical Laboratory of the Western Electric
Company, and continued to work in the electricity business, filing patents to do with
telephone, phonograph, and radio technologies. In 1916 he became Chief Engineer of
the Stromberg-Carlson Telephone Manufacturing Company at Rochester, New York.
This volume was acquired from a collection in a suburb of Rochester. Manson was also a
Member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. An interesting and unique association
copy.
Clinton Woods was a manufacturer of several dozen models of electric vehicles at the turn of the 20th
century, before gasoline-powered cars dominated the market. Includes plates of early electric cars, as well as
one steam-powered automobile, with detailed treatments of the development of the automobile, its design
and construction, the use of batteries, electric motors, testing and inspection, maintenance, auto clubs and
races. An appendix lists the types of electric vehicles available at the time of publication.

A.G. Printing Dept. G.H.Q.A.E.F., 1919. Bound in a custom paper over boards cover
with cloth spine & corners. Most orders bound in with a metal brad, some loose.
An archive of dozens of bulletins individually issued by the American Expeditionary
Forces General Headquarters. The G.H.Q. pamphlets contain orders on various matters
from payment of officers to the salvage of vehicles.
Also included, two mimeographed letters, and one typewritten. One appears unrelated
to military concerns and is dated 1933, another is a letter in duplicate from the headquarters section engineer, with his stamp, directing a Major R.L. Harding to travel from
Bordeaux to Marseille.
The typewritten letter states that the pamphlet ‘Old Glory Waves in Vieux Bordeaux’ by Lt. Col. Lloyd Collis
has been given to Major Harding for distribution to various military stores, the profits to benefit the armed
forces - this letter also bears an official stamp, as well as a pencil intra-office note.
