Expense 2009
Due to an increase in adoption services and an uptick in financial giving, Miriam’s Promise finished 2011
ahead of 2010.
Thanks to Celebrate the Promise which netted $60,000 and The Cooper which netted $132,000, special events
were a major factor in the upswing; in addition to individual donations being on the rise.
Because of these factors, Miriam’s Promise is on more stable financial ground than we have been in awhile.
This is great news for our current programs as well as sustainability for the future.

From the Executive Director
What a privilege it is each year to be a
part of so many hopes and dreams of
families, of children and of a staff who
wants to continually move forward.
Early in the year, our international staff
began the arduous process of accreditation for the Hague standards. We are
celebrating that we have completed our
site review, our first report and corrective actions and now await our final report. But, we are also sad that longtime staff member and Hague coordinator, Susan Smith, retired recently. We
will miss her presence, her encouragement and her dedication to
her work and the families she served.
We are gifted with an incredible Board of Directors who not only
supported that vision and action but also worked hard to make
accreditation happen. So, we send our thanks to them. A special
thanks to Mrs. Mary Cooper and Dr. Jan van Eys, founding members of our Board. They graciously allowed us to honor them
both this year.
Our annual golf challenge is now named the Mary Cooper Golf
Challenge, affectionately known as “The Cooper”. Mary has
been an angel to staff and our families as she worked constantly
to provide funds for services through the golf event. No task has
been too small or too large for Mary to make this event a success.
She brings her passion, her energy and her incredible love for our
children and families to every task she does for Miriam’s Promise
– whether she is addressing envelopes, proof reading press releases or recruiting golfers. This year’s event will be held on
September 24th and Mary will be making certain it is as successful as past events!
Celebrate the Promise , held on March 24th, honored Dr. Jan van
Eys as our first “Angel” for the event. Dr. Jan is affectionately
known as our “wordsmith”, making certain that policies presented to the Board are well-written. He brings such wisdom
and grace to our Board of Directors and has been a long-time
supporter of the event that is now Celebrate the Promise. He
holds us accountable and encourages us to continually move to
greater levels of excellence, both in the event and in our services.
This year we also said goodbye in her “official” capacity to longtime Board member and secretary, Janice Boyko of Christ United
Methodist Church and HCA Healthcare. Janice is taking a break
from her board responsibilities but continues to be a supporter of
the agency. Janice helped update our personnel policies and has
been such a presence of grace and direction for the Board and we
will miss her.
This year, we are excited about the possibilities before us. Between our Board of Directors and our incredible staff, we keep
moving forward. We are excited about the new ways we can be
present in International Adoption after accreditation is received.
We are excited about the new ideas Leslie Schenk, our new program director brings to our program services. Corrections Corporation of America has invited us to be present in a new facility
providing parenting curriculum to female inmates. Already, we
are seeing progress in communications and funding thanks to this
year’s addition of Dietz Osborne as Director of Donor Development and Communications.
