What is a
fraction?
A fraction is a
part of a
whole.

What
does it
mean?
The black
semi-circle is a
fraction of the
whole circle.
The circle is
divided into 2
HALVES
So the black
part is 1 out of
2 halves = ½
The top number tells us how many
parts are in the fraction. (The coloured
parts) It is called the NUMERATOR
The bottom number of the fraction tells
us how many parts the whole is made
up of. It is called the DENOMINATOR.
Cut these shapes in half and then colour in ½ of the
shape.

Why? Because you cannot have parts of nothing!
