Dear Jericho Community,
The Jericho Public Library’s Budget Vote for fiscal year 2017/2018 is Tuesday, May 16th, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM in the Jericho
Middle/High School Gymnasium. I am pleased to announce that this year’s proposed budget, with a 1.42% levy increase, is once again
below the New York State allowable tax cap. We continue to make every effort to contain expenses while improving and expanding
services and programs for our residents.
Patrons can use our versatile self-checkout units conveniently located throughout the Library to quickly checkout and renew items,
access NextReads for reader’s advisory information and to pay fines and fees by credit or debit card, Samsung or Apple pay. Make
sure to download the JPL app to your mobile device and have your Digital Library Card and all our online services at your fingertips
24/7. You can view your account, browse the JPL newsletter, Event Calendar and access downloadable services such as Overdrive and
Hoopla for eBooks, eAudiobooks, Freegal and Hoopla for e-Music, Flipster for e-Magazines, Hoopla and VUDU to stream videos.
VUDU, our streaming service, currently contains over 340 movies which you can check out for 7 days. Roku 4 is now available with
almost 100 new movies to enjoy on your 4K HD TV at home. Visit one of 23 museums by reserving a museum pass online or at the

We have implemented various S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) programs to enrich the educational
experiences of the student population of Jericho. These hands-on learning activities, including our new Summer Camp series, will help
our younger students achieve greater academic success while having fun.
We have updated our YA area to accommodate 6 new computers and seating exclusively for our teen patrons. They now have space
to study and collaborate. We also offer a variety of creative activities in the Maker Space section. Teen volunteers earn community
service credit when they participate in eligible programs.
Patrons of all ages may enjoy movies, concerts, lectures and programs in our state-of-the-art theater. We have a monthly rotation of
art exhibits in our Gallery/Meeting Room. Make sure to see the Student Art Show in November displaying the art work of our talented
elementary school children. We have added a Foreign Language collection in the Children’s Room and Adult area exclusively for our
patrons. While in the library you can log on to Hoopla, an online streaming service, to view movies (including foreign language films),
TV series and/or listen to a wide variety of music, while using your JPL account.
New library card holders are given a JPL bag containing a selection of informative brochures and our newsletter. This packet is a
wonderful way to welcome our new neighbors and introduce them to some of the many services available at the Jericho Public Library.
The 2017/2018 budget increase was formulated with minimal impact on finances but maximum effect on services and programs
for our Jericho community residents.

The Music of Harold Arlen:
The Gamine
Friday, May 19th at 2:00 PM
Audrey Hepburn was an actress, dancer and
humanitarian born in Belgium in 1929. She
rose to stardom on Broadway in 1951 playing the title role
in Collette’s Gigi, which led to her Hollywood film debut in
Roman Holiday. Screen roles came her way, including Holly
Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Eliza Dolittle in My
Fair Lady. Hepburn slowed down her career to spend time
with her family. She became an ambassador for UNICEF
and devoted her later life to helping children around the
world.
Over the Rainbow
Friday, June 16th at 2:00 PM
Harold Arlen wrote some of the best known
tunes of the 20th Century. His first hit, with
lyricist Ted Koehler, was Get Happy. They
worked together through the 1930s, writing hits like Let’s
Fall In Love and Stormy Weather. He then worked with E.
Y. “Yip” Harburg on many films, including The Wizard of Oz
which produced his most famous song, Over the Rainbow.
He continued to compose for Broadway and films through the
1960s. His songs will bring back memories of great music
and great performances.

Richard Rodgers was one of the most talented and prolific
Broadway/movie composers of the 20th century. He worked
with only two lyricists. Many people prefer the team of
Rodgers and Hart for its sophistication and the universality
of the songs they wrote like My Funny Valentine and The
Lady is a Tramp. Others prefer the songs by Rodgers and
Hammerstein that are tied to their many musicals including
Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ and The Sound of Music.
We’ll explore both teams, what made their work so special
and why they’ve stood the test of time.
