Dear Jericho Community, The Jericho Public Library’s Budget Vote for fiscal year 2017/2018 is Tuesday, May 16th, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM in the Jericho Middle/High School Gymnasium. I am pleased to announce that this year’s proposed budget, with a 1.42% levy increase, is once again below the New York State allowable tax cap. We continue to make every effort to contain expenses while improving and expanding services and programs for our residents. Patrons can use our versatile self-checkout units conveniently located throughout the Library to quickly checkout and renew items, access NextReads for reader’s advisory information and to pay fines and fees by credit or debit card, Samsung or Apple pay. Make sure to download the JPL app to your mobile device and have your Digital Library Card and all our online services at your fingertips 24/7. You can view your account, browse the JPL newsletter, Event Calendar and access downloadable services such as Overdrive and Hoopla for eBooks, eAudiobooks, Freegal and Hoopla for e-Music, Flipster for e-Magazines, Hoopla and VUDU to stream videos. VUDU, our streaming service, currently contains over 340 movies which you can check out for 7 days. Roku 4 is now available with almost 100 new movies to enjoy on your 4K HD TV at home. Visit one of 23 museums by reserving a museum pass online or at the Library. Jericho patrons may register online to use our 3D Printer. You can find a project on thingiverse.com or create your own using the Sketchup Pro 2017 recently installed on our Mac computer in the Info Center. Simply design, create, and enjoy your 3D printer project! Homework help is available for children and teens at www.Tutor.com from home or wherever you may be. We have implemented various S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) programs to enrich the educational experiences of the student population of Jericho. These hands-on learning activities, including our new Summer Camp series, will help our younger students achieve greater academic success while having fun. We have updated our YA area to accommodate 6 new computers and seating exclusively for our teen patrons. They now have space to study and collaborate. We also offer a variety of creative activities in the Maker Space section. Teen volunteers earn community service credit when they participate in eligible programs. Patrons of all ages may enjoy movies, concerts, lectures and programs in our state-of-the-art theater. We have a monthly rotation of art exhibits in our Gallery/Meeting Room. Make sure to see the Student Art Show in November displaying the art work of our talented elementary school children. We have added a Foreign Language collection in the Children’s Room and Adult area exclusively for our patrons. While in the library you can log on to Hoopla, an online streaming service, to view movies (including foreign language films), TV series and/or listen to a wide variety of music, while using your JPL account. New library card holders are given a JPL bag containing a selection of informative brochures and our newsletter. This packet is a wonderful way to welcome our new neighbors and introduce them to some of the many services available at the Jericho Public Library. The 2017/2018 budget increase was formulated with minimal impact on finances but maximum effect on services and programs for our Jericho community residents. For Your Health FREE Health Screenings St. Francis Hospital Community Outreach Program Friday, May 5th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM St. Francis Hospital’s Outreach Bus will be in our front parking lot offering free health screenings. The screenings include a brief cardiac history, blood pressure, a simple blood test for cholesterol and diabetes, height, weight and body mass index. They will offer appropriate education and referrals as needed for those participating. No appointment necessary. You MUST be 18 or older. Great Performers with Marc Courtade The Music of Harold Arlen: The Gamine Friday, May 19th at 2:00 PM Audrey Hepburn was an actress, dancer and humanitarian born in Belgium in 1929. She rose to stardom on Broadway in 1951 playing the title role in Collette’s Gigi, which led to her Hollywood film debut in Roman Holiday. Screen roles came her way, including Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady. Hepburn slowed down her career to spend time with her family. She became an ambassador for UNICEF and devoted her later life to helping children around the world. Over the Rainbow Friday, June 16th at 2:00 PM Harold Arlen wrote some of the best known tunes of the 20th Century. His first hit, with lyricist Ted Koehler, was Get Happy. They worked together through the 1930s, writing hits like Let’s Fall In Love and Stormy Weather. He then worked with E. Y. “Yip” Harburg on many films, including The Wizard of Oz which produced his most famous song, Over the Rainbow. He continued to compose for Broadway and films through the 1960s. His songs will bring back memories of great music and great performances.
