Readiness Skills for Success in Kindergarten
Language Arts
1. Use appropriate book handling skills
2. Differentiate between numbers and letters & letters and words
3. Recognize and name some upper and lower case letters (recommendation is 15 letters)
4. Recognize rhyming words
5. Count syllables in spoken words
6. Isolate and pronounce initial word sounds
7. Associates some letters with their names and sounds (recommendation is 15
letters/sounds)
8. Use new vocabulary and phrases acquired in conversations and from listening
9. Tell a story to describe real or imagined experiences or events
10. Retell a familiar story in sequence with picture support
11. Participate in collaborative conversations with peers and adults
12. Respond to what a speaker says in order to follow directions, seek help, or gather
information
13. With prompting/support, generate ideas to convey information
14. With prompting/support, answer questions about a story or text
15. With prompting/support, identify basic similarities and differences between two texts
read aloud on the same topic
16. Identify familiar words and environmental print
Mathematics
1. Know number names and the count the sequence (up to 20)
2. Count and state the number of objects
3. Compare numbers to determine greater than/less than
4. Understand addition as putting together and understand subtraction as taking apart
5. Identify and describe shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle)
6. Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes
7. Describe and compare measurable attributes of length and weights of everyday objects
(longer/shorter, heavier/lighter)
8. Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category
*NOTE: It is also suggested for incoming Kindergarten students to know the basic colors,
be able to print their name with only the first letter capitalized and be able to hold a
pencil/scissors correctly.
