The first normal school classes sponsored by the Baltimore Association were held in the African Baptist Church located on the corner of Calvert and Saratoga Streets. In 1868, with the aid of a grant from the Freedmen’s Bureau, the Baltimore Association purchased from the Society of Friends a building at Courtland and Saratoga Streets for the relocation of its normal school. In 1883, it was reorganized solely as a normal school to train Negro teachers. The Baltimore Normal School received occasional financial support from Baltimore City in 1870 and the State of Maryland in 1872. In 1871, it received a legacy from the Nelson Wells Fund. This fund, established before Wells’ death in February 1843, provided for the education of freed Negro children in the State of Maryland. On April 8, 1908, at the request of the Baltimore Normal School, which desired permanent status and funding as an institution for the education of Negro teachers, the State Legislature authorized its Board of Education to assume control of the school. The same law re-designated the institution as Normal School No. 3. Subsequently, it was relocated on a 187-acre-tract in Prince George’s County, and by 1914 it was known as the Maryland Normal and Industrial School at Bowie. A two-year professional curriculum in teacher education, which started in 1925, was expanded to a three-year program. In 1935, a four-year program for the training of elementary school teachers began, and the school was renamed Maryland State Teachers College at Bowie. In 1951, with the approval of the State Board of Education, its governing body, Maryland State Teachers College expanded its program to train teachers for junior high schools. Ten years later, permission was granted to institute a teacher-training program for secondary education. In 1963, a liberal arts program was started, and the name was changed to Bowie State College. In 1970, Bowie State College was authorized to grant its first graduate degree, the Master of Education. A significant milestone in the development of the graduate studies at Bowie State was achieved with the Board of Trustees’ approval of the establishment of the Adler-Dreikurs Institute of Human Relations in 1975. On July 1, 1988, Bowie State College officially became Bowie State University, a change reflecting significant growth in the institution’s programs, enrollment and service to the local area. On the same day, the University also became one of the constituent institutions of the newly formed University System of Maryland. In 1995, Bowie State University won an 11-year $27 million award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/National Science Foundation to become one of only six national Model Institutions for Excellence in science, engineering, and mathematics. This award significantly strengthened the institution’s academic infrastructure and enhanced an already excellent computer science and technology program that has consistently ranked first in the nation in graduating African American students with master’s degrees. Bowie State University, throughout its history, has achieved major milestones in spite of limited resources. In spring 2005, with the unveiling of the supercomputer that was built by Bowie State University faculty and students, Bowie State University emerged as a leader among higher education institutions in computing power. At the time of its unveiling, Bowie State’s super computer was the fastest supercomputer of all higher education institutions in the state of Maryland, the eighth fastest in the United States, and among the top 200 fastest in the world. Since Bowie State University is among the nation’s leaders in teacher education, with 50 years of successive accreditation by the National Council of the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), one should understand the reason that the first doctoral program would be in the field of education. For the first time in the history of the University, Bowie State University conferred an earned doctorate, with 16 persons receiving the Doctorate in Education Leadership, during the May 2005 commencement. In June 2006 the University System of Maryland Board of Regents approved Bowie State University’s first doctoral degree in a science discipline, the Doctor of Applied Science in Computer Science. Currently, Bowie State University offers 19 bachelor’s degree programs, 20 master’s degree programs, and two doctoral degree programs. university president - President Dr. Mickey L. Goings 5 2007-08 BOW IE STATE men's basketball Season outlook 6 Bowie State Bulldogs 2007-08 Outlook Bowie State University men’s basketball will probably be “status quo” for the 2007-2008. Even though the Bulldogs lost the CIAA Player of the Year and CIAA leading scorer Gil Goodrich and the team’s second leading scorer Tyronne Beale, BSU should still be a pretty good team. Bowie State finished last season with a 19-10 overall record (11-9 in the CIAA), and placed third within the Eastern Division. Gone are Goodrich’s 25.5 points and 7.4 assists per game and Beale’s 21.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. However, the Bulldogs return seniors Joshua Johnson (6-6, 210, forward), Jason Ingram (6-4, 199 – guard) and Orlando Wright (6-3, 200, guard). Wright started all 29 games last season averaging 10.8 ppg and 3.9 rebounds. Ingram played in all 29 games (starting 28) and ranked fourth in team scoring (9.4) and third in rebounds (5.4). Johnson played in every game last season and ranked second in team rebounds, averaging 6.7 per game. Another key player off the BSU bench was freshman Corey Camphor. Camphor returns for his sophomore season and one of the Bulldogs’ other key returnees. Orlando Wright Top newcomers to the Bowie State Bulldogs program will be seniors David Paris and Arthur Bowers. Paris, a transfer from the University of California, is a 6-9, 250 lb. center from Piedmont, California. Bowers is a 6-3, 205 lb shooting guard that sat out last season after transferring from the University of Massachusetts. Other top newcomers include sophomore Christian Jackson (6-4, 210, guard/forward) and senior Carlos Williams (6-1, 180, guard). Bowie State led the conference in scoring (87.0) and free throw percentage (.711) and the Bulldogs ranked second in scoring margin (+7.0). Bowie State will open the 2007-2008 season Friday, November 16, hosting the Bulldogs Classic. BSU will tangle with Cheyney at 7:30 p.m. while Holy Family and East Stroudsburg will tip the Classic off at 5:30 p.m. BSU will also make a return to the “Mecca” Madison Square Garden – December 1st to face Virginia Union University. Jason Ingram head coach - Head Coach Luke D’Alessio begins his 9th season on the Bulldogs sideline and has many new faces to blend into a unit. D’Alessio joined the Bowie State University family in 1999 with a reputation as a coach that was able to turn a program around. After posting a 7-21 record in his inaugural season, D’Alessio lived up to that reputation in 2000-2001, when his Bulldogs compiled a 19–9 record, BSU’s first winning season in 30 years. The teams 10 and 6 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association also marked Bowie State’s first winning record in the conference. Some of D’Alessio’s other accomplishments include the 2003 CIAA Championship, 2003 NCAA Division II Final Four Semifinalist, 2004, 2005 CIAA Eastern Division Champions, 2004 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Semifinalist, ranked #1 at one point during the 2004-2005 Season, hosted opening round of the NCAA South Atlantic Regional and 2005 NCAA Division II Sweet 16. Personal accomplishments include 2001–2002 and 2003-2004 CIAA Coach of the Year, 2003 Most Outstanding Coach (CIAA Tournament) and 2003 South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. After coaching the first two years at Bowie State in a part-time role, D’Alessio was given the position on a full-time basis beginning with the 2001-2002 season. This appointment marked the first time in at least a decade, the Bulldogs program operated with a full-time coach. He began his coaching career at Good Counsel High School as a junior varsity coach from 1984 - 1986, before moving on to his alma mater, Catholic University of America. D’Alessio, a 1983 graduate of Catholic University, was no stranger to the Washington, DC campus. He played guard for them from 1982 - 1984 and helped his team advance to the conference finals in 1984. D’Alessio’s tenure at Catholic University began in 1986 working first for head coach Jack Bruen until 1989, then continuing with head coach Bob Valvano from 1990- 1992. He was the head recruiter and devised and implemented offensive and defensive strategies for teams that won five tournament championships during his tenure at the Washington, D.C. campus. D’Alessio got his first head coaching job in 1994 when he took over the program at Catonsville Community College. Catonsville had not had a winning season since 1981. In 1995, he turned the corner with a 14 - 13 record and would never look back. D’Alessio guided Catonsville to the Elite 8 in 1996 and his 1999 team ranked #1 in the country during the 1999 season as well. Over the next four years, D’Alessio’s team would win no less than 23 games each season. He was recognized for his outstanding coaching jobs, garnering Maryland Junior College Coach of the Year honors in 1996, 1997 and 1999. His teams also won the Maryland Junior College championship during that period. He and his wife of 24 years, Jacqui, reside in Annapolis, MD, along with their children Jacob (23), Elena (22) and Alex (12). 2007-08 BOW IE STATE men's basketball Luke D’Alessio 7 2007-08 BOW IE STATE men's basketball assistant coaches 8 Fred Burroughs timmothy thomas Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Coach Burroughs enters his sixth season as an assistant for the Bulldogs. Founded in 1912 on the campus of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), the CIAA embodies a history rich in tradition, which epitomizes the fortitude of its 11 colleges and universities. When the conference was founded, it was originally known as the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Its founding fathers were Allen Washington and C.H. Williams of Hampton Institute; Ernest J. Marshall of Howard University; George Johnson of Lincoln University (PA); W.E. Atkins, Charles Fraser and H.P. Hargrove of Shaw University and J.W. Barco and J.W. Pierce of Virginia Union University. Student-athletes who compete in CIAA sports this season, will continue a legacy of excellence that culminated in a competitive frenzy that began a half century ago. That culminating event was the first CIAA basketball tournament. Today, it is highly regarded as an NCAA model for sports promotion and sponsorship. The first CIAA tournament was held at the end of the 1945-46 season in Turner’s Arena in Washington, DC, where the North Carolina College men’s team reined victorious over that inaugural tournament. Lem Graves, who chronicled the tournament events for a weekly newspaper, wrote that it was the “all-time sports thrill of a lifetime.” His assertion remains true today. The CIAA, which is composed of 10 member institutions: Bowie State University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, Saint Augustine’s College, Saint Paul’s College, Shaw University,Virginia State University and Virginia Union University, is divided into eastern and western divisions in all sports except baseball, and sponsors 16 annual championships. The men’s championships are football, cross country, basketball, cross country, indoor track and field, golf and baseball. The women’s championships are volleyball, cross country, indoor track and field, tennis, bowling, outdoor track and field and softball. Most recently, Virginia Union University won the NCAA Division II men’s basketball national titles in 2005, 1992, and 1980. CIAA basketball teams have appeared in the NCAA tournament in each of the last 28 years. The confer- ence has distinguished itself by having more teams compete for the national basketball title than any other conference at the Division II level. The CIAA represents the embodiment of quality in athletics. Not only does CIAA basketball rank amongst the top Division II conferences in the nation, it also celebrates some of the most revered football coaches who have ever taught the game. Coach Willard Bailey, currently at St. Paul’s College is the CIAA’s career coaching leader with 217 victories, and Herman “Ike” Boone, former Head Coach at T.C. Williams High School, who was portrayed by Denzel Washington in Disney’s blockbuster movie “Remember the Titans,” are two of the many coaches that have brought unparalleled value to the CIAA’s efforts in providing student athletes with quality educational opportunities that will last a lifetime. As the CIAA inches closer to 100 years of excellence in education and athletics, we continue to welcome growth and change; all with the confidence that the legacy of the CIAA will continue.
