Month Newsletter Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra www.TahoeSierraKiwanis.org Editor: Marie Foster President’s Corner The first Saturday of each month our division 45 has what is known as a DCM (Division Council Meeting). I am happy to report that at our May DCM, the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra showed up with nine club members as well as the President of our Aktion Club Dennis Lahaderne. We had the most attendees of any club in Division 45. I was so proud of Dennis. He was asked to be a part of the program and display the scrapbook that the Aktion Club members created and showed the trophy they received for an excellent job. The Carson Valley Kiwanis Club will be coming up to our Aktion Club meeting this Thursday, May 12th at LTCC in the Aspen Room. It would be wonderful to have an outstanding show of support from our club members showcasing our Aktion Club to the Carson Valley Kiwanis members. AMBBR (America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride) is coming up on Sunday, June 7th. We need every member to be actively involved so please put this date on your calendar. In addition, we assist with the registration at Sports LTD on Saturday, June 6th and again, we will need your help. Let’s continue to have a GREAT year. See you all at the next meeting. Kiwanis Name Badges Tom Millham is updating the club name badge box with a slot for all members. Following our club meetings, it is tradition that all name badges are returned to the box and available for the next meeting. Several years ago a number of our club members ordered plastic engraved badges to use when attending Kiwanis events outside our regular club meeting. These badges are available in gold or blue and with either a magnetic or bulldog clip. Magnetic badges are $18 and bulldog clip badges $16 each. The price includes engraving. If you are interested in ordering an engraved badge, they can be found at Tahoe Sierra Club Calendar Thursday, May 12th Aktion Club Meeting, LTCC Aspen Room, 3pm Saturday, May 21st Historical Cemetery Clean Up, 10:00 - noon Monday, May 23rd SeptOberfest committee meeting, location TBA Thursday, May 26th Aktion Club Meeting, LTCC Aspen Room, 3pm Saturday, June 4th AMBBR Registration, Sports LTD, 10am – 8pm Sunday, June 5th 1 - AMBBR Late Registration, Hard Rock, 4:30 – 8am 2 - Road Closure – Spring Creek Track/Hwy 89, 6:00 – 9:00 am 3 - After Ride Party - Pool Security, Hard Rock, 11:30 – 5pm Wednesday, June 8th Board Meeting, LTCC Aspen Room, 3pm Saturday & Sunday, September 10th & 11th Tour de Tahoe Bike Ride (watch for full details) Thursday, September 22nd SeptOberfest – MontBleu Casino Resort www.kiwanis.org/store Page 2 of 8 2016-17 CNH Kiwanis Division 45 Officers At this month’s DCM, Mary Geisler was unanimously elected as Division 45 Lieutenant Governor Designate. She will begin her term of office as Division 45 Lt. Governor on October 1st. Mary is a member of the Sierra Nevada Kiwanis Club. Also elected, Sondra Condron, a member of the Carson Valley Kiwanis Club is Lt. Governor Elect. She will hold that position until she is elected next year as Lt. Governor Designate to serve as Lt. Governor for 2017-18. For some of our newer members, Division 45 is comprised of eight clubs: Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton Township, Fallon, Lake Tahoe, North Lake Tahoe, Sierra Nevada and Tahoe Sierra. Just as the club president is the leader of the club, the lieutenant governor is the leader of the division. He/she works closely with club leadership, specifically club presidents, to ensure that they feel supported and have access to information to continuously improve the members’ experience. The Lt. Governor is responsible for supporting club leaders and strengthening his or her division during the year in office. The Best of Tahoe We already know that we have the best ‘Charity Event’ in town but let’s get the word out and be recognized. You can vote for our club in the following categories: Recreation and Entertainment, Charity Event (Kiwanis of Tahoe Sierra SeptOberfest) and Local Charity. Voting closes May 14th so time is running out. Page 3 of 8 Valhalla Volunteer Workday Submitted by Bob Sweatt Valhalla, built by the Heller’s in the 1920’s is an amazing historical site. Our historical sites in Tahoe are a precious resource, not only for our pleasure, but for many visitors who travel here. And, although their beauty and nostalgia go without saying, these buildings and grounds need lots of tender care. Saturday, April 30th was Valhalla’s volunteer workday where club members Chris and Jan Lynds, Bob Olson, Mike Foster and Bob Sweatt, along with Key Club members Ian MacLean, Dillon King and Kyle Yokotake joined in to help clean up the grounds. Inside the house, new felt protectors were put on the chairs legs to protect the newly refinished floor. Thank you to those who joined in on this annual task. Club T-shirts and Caps Don’t want to get your club shirt dirty cleaning the cemetery or another not so clean service project, how about purchasing a club t-shirt? Purple t-shirts imprinted with our club name on the back are now available for $11 each. Embroidered club ball caps in either high or low profile are available for $12 each. Tom will have shirts and caps available for purchase at our May 18th meeting. Page 4 of 8 Happy Birthday Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis – Part II Submitted by Tom Millham April 18, 2001. That is the ‘Official’ Birthday of our Kiwanis Club. In the last article, we told you about what had to happen BEFORE we became an official club on April 18, 2001. That was just the start. About 5 weeks later, the club celebrated its ‘Charter Night’. This is the night of ‘Pomp and Circumstance’! All of the clubs in the surrounding area, both in and around Division 45, come to help you celebrate the birth of your new Kiwanis club. Our ‘Charter Night’ occurred on the Tahoe Queen. It was a very special occasion as the Governor of the Cal-Nev-Ha District, Tom Vildibill as well as our Division 45 Lt. Governor, Mike Mader, were both in attendance to get our club started on the right foot. Lt. Governor Elect (at that time), Ralph Denny, created some beautiful woodworks for our club by donating a podium as well as a member badge box. That first night we chartered with 53 people and we, as a club, decided that we were going to do what we could to work with the community by accomplishing projects and not just writing checks. We were the third Kiwanis Club in South Lake Tahoe. The other two were the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe (chartered in 1959) and the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe Sunrisers (chartered in 1973). Since then, the Sunrisers surrendered their charter last September, leaving two clubs in South Lake Tahoe. The Charter President was Tom Millham, with Sue Tarter as President Elect and Pam Singer as Vice President. Since she never got to serve as Immediate Past President of the Sunrisers, we decided to elect Rexanne RingHarris as our IPP with Katy Spivy as Secretary and Doyle Harris as Treasurer. We had five members of the board serving two years with alternating expiration dates. They were Margie Daum, Cheryl Millham, Steve Rose, Kathy Evans and Bert Spivy. We were an official club for only 4 months when, wham---a new Kiwanis year was upon us. The club decided to keep everyone in their same position for the next year. Although our charter night was on the Tahoe Queen in May 2001, our ‘first Annual Installation of Officers’ was held at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course on September 29, 2001. Now you have a little more knowledge than you ever wanted. Happy Birthday Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra. In 15 years you have come a long way baby!! 2001 2016 Page 5 of 8 Welcome Blair Bolles At our May 4th meeting we welcomed Blair Bolles as the newest member of our Kiwanis Club. Thank you Jan Lynds for sharing your ‘K’. We look forward to getting to know Blair and having her join us in upcoming service projects, SeptOberfest and club socials. SeptOberfest Plans for SeptOberfest 2016 are well underway. Be sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, September 22nd. This is the one event of our Kiwanis year that we ask everyone to participate in. Pat Frega is our SeptOberfest chairman and is holding regular planning meetings. Our next meeting is Monday, May 23rd at 6pm. Watch for an email from Pat with location and time. SeptOberfest Sponsors Submitted by Mike Foster Last week everyone should have received by email both sponsor letters and a spreadsheet showing our 2015 SeptOberfest sponsors. In the years past, we seem to have waited up to the last minute to obtain our sponsors. We should remember, that it is these sponsors that help defray the hard costs of SeptOberfest. The three sponsorship levels are for $100, $250 and $500. All three are detailed in the sponsor letter. Last year we received a total of $3,000 in cash sponsors. In addition, we received $3,000 from ‘in kind’ sponsors from our advertisers. This covered both printed and radio advertising. Please take the time to make a list of those businesses you frequent and be prepared to hand them a letter and talk to them about our event. A good source for sponsors come from doctors, dentists, service providers (plumbers, landscapers, etc.) Our event flier will include the business logo for $500 sponsors but to do this, we must have their check by July 15th. We can accept $500 sponsors after July 15th but they will not be recognized on the flier. For your use, you can print a copy of our flier from our website but it does not yet include any $500 sponsors. Sponsors will be added after the July 15th deadline. Page 6 of 8 A Message from Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Submitted by Cheryl Millham When you are working in your yard, getting ready for summer, remember to empty ALL containers which may have ‘standing’ water, which breeds mosquitos. We are anticipating a heavy mosquito season this year. We all might want to encourage swallows and bats around our houses. Swallows can eat 1,000 mosquitos a day to feed their babies and bats can eat up to 1,000 mosquitos PER HOUR in a feeding frenzy. LTWC has a very simple diagram for a bat house that you are welcome to use. Kiwanis Social for May?? Here is an idea for our May social. Dick VanBuskirk, member of the Lake Tahoe Kiwanis Club and South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, asked me to remind ALL of our members that because our Club is a member of the Chamber (that’s the Chamber located in California), that our entire membership is always invited to mixers and Chamber events. Coming up on Thursday, May 19th is ‘Foot Golf’, a Chamber mixer held at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. All of our club members and families are invited. There is no charge for the event which begins at 5:30pm. Page 7 of 8 Around Our Community Thursday, May 12th Bert’s Spaghetti Night, A benefit for Tahoe Arts Project, 5:30-7:30. For info call Jan Hansen 916-9558434 Thought for the Day Before packing up the grill, beach towels, and bathing suits for an eventful Memorial Day weekend, we should all take a little time to remember what it is exactly we are celebrating. Dating back to the American Civil War when it was known as “Decoration Day,” the practice of placing flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers is not only done in remembrance of the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, but also to honor the freedom in which they upheld. To all of our Kiwanis members, and members of your families that served, thank you for your service. “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." – President John F. Kennedy Page 8 of 8
