Knowledge Plus Character Pave The Road To College And Beyond.
MCP: Lola Rowe North Family Newsletter
From the Desk of the Principal:
We are at the turn of another chapter here at MCP with the closing of quarter 2 on January 19,
2017. It is hard to believe that we are now midway through the 2016-2017 school year and our
scholars are already beginning to think about the next grade levels. Many of our 8th graders have
been with us since kindergarten and are already registering for classes at their respected high
schools. We will soon begin working with them on their senior showcase presentations and
watching them leave for their final out of state trip as middle school scholars! After watching them
grow both academically and socially for the past years it will be hard to see them leave but we are
MCP proud in knowing that they are well prepared to continue charting their paths to college and
beyond!
Last month we asked our parents to complete surveys which are designed to help us with
continuous improvements of our educational deliver practices to families and scholars. After
analyzing the feedback and with the intent to be transparent I want to share with you a few common
themes that were shared
The things that I like best about my child/ren attending Milw College Prep are:
My child has the opportunity to see teachers of her race and ethnicity, to me this helps
them understand that they have the potential and drive to achieve anything.
Friendly, fun environment
My child is receiving a great education, which is preparing them for college and beyond.
Staff are very relatable.
Any things you would like to see changed/ improved at Milw College prep?
Better communication from school to parents (tone).
Timeliness and detail, teacher prompt responses
Homework help/ clarity for scholars
Activities
I want you all to know that our faculty and staff are in appreciation of the time that you took to
provide us rich feedback. It is because of your sharing that we are able to reflect on what is
working and maintain that while making changes in areas that we need to ensure that we are
working together. Our goal is to remain a 5 star school and have 100% parent satisfaction through
a collaborative approach. When we accomplish these goals our CHILDREN are the ultimate
winners! Please read this week's newsletter carefully as it contains important information including
school out dates and parent teacher conference information. There is also an important END OF
THE YEAR TRIP parent meeting for 5th-8th grade on January 26th at 4:15. Read on for more
information!

NAEP Assessment
MCP Scholars Selected to take the NAEP Assessment
February 8th - 4th grade
February 9th - 8th grade
What is NAEP?
NAEP, or the National Assessment of Educational Progress, is often called the "Nation's Report
Card." It is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation's
students know and can do in core subjects. NAEP is congressionally mandated, and was first
administered in 1969 to measure student achievement nationally. Teachers, principals, parents,
policymakers, and researchers all use NAEP results to assess progress and develop ways to
improve education in the United States.
How was my child selected? Is it really a random selection?
Your child was randomly selected to participate as a representative of students in your state who
attend schools with similar characteristics. The schools selected to participate in NAEP are
representative of the demographic and geographic composition of the state as a whole. In a typical
state, about 100 schools are selected for grade 4 assessment and 100 schools for grade 8
assessment.
Your child was selected from a list of all students in his/her grade in the school, including the
students with special needs. The NAEP staff selects students from this list by using a statistically
valid randomization process. Neither a student's class performance nor a school's standing within
the district or state has any bearing upon selection for the assessment.
Will my child's answers be kept confidential?
Yes, it is against federal law to identify any student participating in the assessment. Since the first
NAEP assessment in 1969, students names have been kept completely confidential. After
students complete the assessment, their names are physically removed from the booklets and
never leave their schools. Instead of reporting individual scores, NAEP combines all student
responses to provide information on the performance of demographic groups of students. NAEP
reports overall results for the nation, the states, and for groups of students, such as males and
females.
Will taking NAEP affect my child's grade?
No. NAEP does not calculate scores for individual students, so neither the government nor your
child's school or teacher will ever know how your child performed on NAEP.
Will I get to see the results of my child's test?
No. There are no individual student results. However, if you would like to explore the results for
students in various subjects, check out the wide variety of NAEP data tools-including State
Profiles-that allow you to view the NAEP results from many different angles.

"AMPITS MATTERS"
Check back next week to learn
more about the importance of
another AMPIT. Our school has
Physical Education, Music, Art, and
Information Technology.
Technology MATTERS!
Why and How to Use Computers in the Classroom
In this day and age, it is the teachers who are lagging behind in computer skills. Whether your
school requires the students to have computer time in the classroom, or if you just desire to
integrate it yourself, the benefits are great. Students today are already tech-savvy. Some may
even know more about computers than you do! It benefits both you and your students to begin
using this technology in the classroom more and more. Most schools will require teachers to
incorporate computer use into the grade level curriculum. The new teacher may need assistance
deciding how to do this on a daily basis. Some teachers are hesitant to introduce computer time
into the classroom because they view this as a form of "free time" or they may not be confident in
their own computing skills. However, when governed and lead properly, integrating computer time
into the classroom will have several benefits.
Students gain word processing skills when learning to type: skills they will need in college
and the workplace.
Working on computers fosters collaboration between students and between the student and
teacher as they work together on projects. Often leaders emerge who really enjoy.
Computers and can help others, which is useful to classmates and the teacher.
Computer time promotes using higher order thinking skills and is a natural form of discovery
through trial and error.
Computer time increases responsibility, independence and a sense of accomplishment.
Computers can reinforce instruction or are an assertive tool in the instruction through
podcasts, video and multimedia.

Brrrrr it's cold outside!
Wisconsin winter months can be
brutal. Please remember to dress
your children accordingly. Refer to
your local news channel
(4,6,12,58) to check the forecast
each day.
Attention Parents
We have noticed an increase in students leaving/ loosing winter clothing items i.e.
coats, hats, scarfs etc. Parents please help us by reminding scholars to secure
their items in their book bags or inside coat sleeves. The school cannot be liable
for lost clothes.
***Inclement Weather Advisory***
If Milwaukee Public Schools closes due to bad weather, Milwaukee College Prep is closed. Listen
to the radio or television for the announcement of the closing of MPS.
In the event that weather conditions make travel to school hazardous and unsafe, but MPS does
not close, it is recommended that parents use their discretion in bringing their child/ren to school.
Once the school day has started, school will not be canceled early in the event that weather
conditions become bad during the day. In these cases, it is up to the parents to decide if they want
to pick their children up early.
If the outdoor temperature is below 18 degrees F with the wind chill, scholars will be staying inside
for recess. However, if the temperature permits, we will be sending our scholars outside for
recess, even on cold snowy days. Please make sure your child has the appropriate cold weather
attire, such as hats, mittens, gloves, boots and a winter jacket.
Being on time is
important!
We have seen an increase in tardies and absences due to the weather. Please allow an
additional 5-10 minutes for travel to arrive to school on time.
Please refer to our tardiness policy in our handbook (page 6) below:
"Getting to school on time is a key to your child's success - at school and in life. At Milwaukee
College Prep, the learning begins from the moment scholars walk in the door.
Parents/guardians/families are expected to ensure that their children are in school on time.
Students who are late often miss essential math and reading instruction, disrupt the learning of
other children, and risk falling behind on our ambitious curriculum. One of the most common
reasons that people lose their job is persistent tardiness to work.
If a student will be arriving after 8:30 a.m. with a doctor's excuse or because of a family
emergency, the parent must call the office before 8:15 a.m. to notify the school.
Parents are allowed to make three phone calls per quarter to notify the school of late
arrivals. Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. without proper notification by the
parent/guardian will not be allowed to attend school that day.
If there is a habitual office calls for tardies the family must meet with the School Social
Worker and Dean of Students."
