MORNING DROP-OFF
A big thank you to all the parents who have
helped with the morning arrival by not parking
in front of the school. The number of calls
regarding congestion has decreased and
traffic is moving better thanks to more
people being courteous and respecting the
morning procedure.

Girls’ Roundball Season Ends by Phil Trumble
The Girls’ Basketball season ended last week with contests with Will Carleton and Jackson Prep. The girls were able to not only compete this year with other teams but notched a
few victories. More importantly, improvement was evident with each passing week as their
basketball skills and confidence improved. For such a young program with players so new to
the game the season really could be called a success. We have much to look forward to next
year if the girls take the summer months to sharpen the fundamental skills introduced this
year!

STUDENT COUNCIL BOOK DRIVE
Do you have any books lying around that are no longer being read? Or books that your children long out-grown? Well we
have the perfect place for them!! Student Council is starting a book drive for the HPS library!! Our library could definitely use some more friends! Here they would be given a nice home on the shelf and read by our students. You can
send the book(s) with your child to school or drop them off yourself at the front desk. Gently used books are encouraged.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
The Hillsdale ISD is offering a Positive Behavior Support webinar on Tuesday, April 11th from 5:30-7:30 PM.
This webinar will introduce Positive Behavior Supports (PBS). Many children have behaviors that are part of
their disability. These behaviors may make it difficult to learn, cause harm, or isolate a child from his or her
peers. It is important for parents to understand that behavior is communication.

NEWS FROM THE TOP OF THE HEAP (7th & 8th grade) by Mrs. Kuenzer
Our stock market project continues and some are doing much better with their investments than others. I believe I asked last month who would be able to beat Mr. Bauman. This month my question is who will be able to
beat me? I have been doing rather well in our competition. However, there is still plenty of time for my winning
ways to crumble and for others to take over the lead.
We are wrapping up our novel The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy. Students will take a test over the novel
and then watch the movie.
Our next novel will be A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. A Wrinkle in Time is a novel of science fiction
that draws extensively from the literary traditions of fantasy, fairy tale, myth, and fable. It concerns itself
with issues of good and evil, the power of love, and the importance of concern for others.
The setting of the story, or the time and place in which the events of the story occur, plays an important role in
A Wrinkle in Time. The novel begins in an unspecified locale on earth where the Murry family lives, shifts to the
planet Uriel, moves on to Orion’s belt, to Camazotz and Ixchel, and finally returns to earth for the last scene.
The uniqueness of each foreign place provides an atmosphere of fantasy.
This novel is the perfect tie in to our next major writing piece. Students will be writing their own fantasy fiction
story.
Let’s Meet Mrs. Wallace
by Abby Bates and Sydney Knoll
On February 23, we interviewed one of our new teachers, Mrs. Wallace, and learned quite a few interesting things. For
instance, did you know that as a child our first grade teacher had a pet duck? We hope that you enjoy learning about
her as much as we did.
Mrs. Wallace was born on August 2 in a year that should not be written here. As a child her favorite board game was
The Game of Life. She used to play it with her family a lot. If given the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world,
Mrs. Wallace would choose Ireland because it is the country her grandmother was from. In school, she played basketball and competitive cheerleading. She liked sports but never had any musical talent.
In college, she majored in elementary education and minored in English. Mrs. Wallace found this school through her
cousin Ms. Bildner. She loves teaching but if she had to choose a favorite and least favorite subject to teach, grammar
is her favorite and writing is her least favorite. She loves to read and if she could meet any famous person in history,
she would meet J.K. Rowling. She likes most fiction books and her favorite authors are F. Scott Fitzgerald and Nicholas
Sparks.
Her pet peeve is when people drive the wrong way in places like parking lots. Her favorite holiday is Christmas because
of her family. She loves mint chocolate chip ice cream, chicken scampi, and the color purple. She has two cats and
fears spiders greatly. Her favorite quote is “All that glitters is not gold” by Shakespeare.
We hope you enjoyed learning about Mrs. Wallace as much as we did.

Izzie’s Monthly Book Reviews!
This Month’s Book Review: The Dogs
Author: Allan Stratton
Age Range: 12 and up
Rating:
Cameron is a young boy with a frightening past. His mother has always had
911 on the dial, because of Cameron’s supposed stalker. This stalker has
caused Cameron and his mother to move time, and time again. He sadly has to
move again. Mother has bought a rundown house for cheap, and they are off
to their new/old house.
The first few nights in this house has been a terrifying and puzzling experience. He claims to be seeing a strange foggy figure off into the field. In fact
there it is again. What is it? What Cameron didn’t know was, trying to figure
out what this figure is, is what almost led him to his very death.
Baking Contest!
That’s right boys and girls, we’re having a Baking Contest! The contest will be
in conjunction with the Science Fair on March 30th. There will be three categories: Pies; Cakes (and cupcakes); and cookies/squares (brownies, desert bars,
etc). All entries must be submitted by noon on the day of the Science Fair and
judging will take place during lunch time. The winners in each category will be
announced at the Science Fair. All students who enter the contest will receive a
raffle ticket for a chance to win a Kindle Fire tablet! Entries must be submitted
so that they can be sold at the Science Fair Bake Sale with the proceeds going
to the 8th grade trip. Official rules and judging criteria will be available at the
school as soon as Mr. Bauman decides what he likes best in each catagory. Rumor has it that his favorite cake is German Chocolate and he LOVES oatmeal
cookies with coconut.)
So dust off the old cookbook, get out the apron, floor and eggs and start
baking up something delicious to enter in the first ever HPS Baking Contest!

Guess What’s In the Bag!?!
February was a busy month in first grade. We celebrated our 100th day of
school in February by playing a math dice tally game and sharing mystery bags
with our class. Each student put 100 items into their mystery bag and wrote
three clues about the items in his or her bag. Students then presented their
bag to the class by reading each clue aloud. After the clues were read, students
were able to guess what items were in the bag. This activity brought a lot of
excitement to our class and students enjoyed presenting their mystery bags
and guessing what was inside each bag.
Not only was the 100th day of school in February, but we were also able to
celebrate Valentine’s Day as well. Students were able to show their creativity
and make Valentine’s Day mailboxes out cereal boxes
that were donated to our class. We would like to say
thank you to all those who brought in cereal boxes and
extra cereal boxes as well, and a special thanks to Seneca Yahne’s family for donating a bag full of cereal
boxes. Every student was able to create their own mailbox as a result of donations.
As the busy month of February comes to an end, we
look forward to the upcoming Reading Month of March.
STUDENTS OF THE MONTH-February
We continue our recognition of students and character with February and
“courage” as our pillar of character. Each class is represented by a student
who best demonstrates courage in their daily life. Each month we have a different “Pillar of Character” for which we recognize students. It is not enough
to teach and promote character in the school, but we must also recognize and
celebrate its exhibition!
Kindergarten — Kindergarten — Lance Rutan is our Student of the Month for
February. Lance is a great example of someone who is respectful to all. He
speaks and acts in a respectful manner to adults and peers alike. I am glad
that Lance is such a wonderful example to his classmates. Great job, Lance!
1st Grade—Mrs. Wallace’s student of the month for February is Tayla
McDonough. Tayla shows respect every day to her classmates, teachers, and
other adults in the building. Tayla has a sweet spirit, follows directions, and
gets along with others. Her respectful attitude helps her to be a friend to all.
1st Grade —
2nd Grade— Wyatt Holmes is the 2nd grade student of the month. Wyatt
shows respect to his classmates and teacher. He uses kind words and tone
whenever he addresses someone. Wyatt sets an example for what acting respectful looks like. Keep up the good work!
2/3 Grade—Mrs. Hiltbrunner’s Student of the Month for February is Caelan
Scripter.
3rd—The third grade student of the month is Hailey Herndon. She shows a
great amount of respect to her classmates as well as to me. She respects students that understand assignments before she understands them. She is willing to learn from others when needed and share her knowledge when she understands something before others. She is quiet and appropriate in the classroom at all times. Hailey is a great example of respect!
Respect your efforts, respect yourself.
Self-respect leads to self-discipline. When
you have both firmly under your belt, that's
real power.

not have true respect for anyone.

Book Fair
The HPS Book Fair begins March 9 in the
school library. Students will have the opportunity to shop and
