Background Hang Time grows out of several years of two friends - Howard Parrish and Jim Thompson - spending a couple of hours on Sunday afternoons "presencing" in the Raven St. community - a section of Mosby Court, a local public housing community. In this context, "presencing" means visiting, getting to know, and hanging out with some of the young men in the area. On Sunday afternoons, this usually involves playing or watching basketball as a fun way of building relationships and friendships. While some of the young men moved and others appeared on the basketball court inconsistently, relationships and trust developed with time and consistency. In the middle of 2010, Jim felt called to explore moving into an adjacent neighborhood and begin discerning how to walk with friends in the Raven St. community from within the community. In January 2011, he moved into a house in the Glen Lea neighborhood within walking distance of Raven St. and began a three-and-a-half year Christ-led community immersion experience of increased "presencing" and connecting. The time period of the commitment honors what many scholars believe is the length of time of Jesus' ministry. Impact It is challenging to quantify the accomplishments of a relational initiative, but - as the following quote suggests the impact can be life-changing for young men and for those who walk with them. "An often-quoted research study noted that the single greatest factor determining whether a child succeeds in life or messes up is the presence and acceptance of a caring adult in his or her life. The amazing discovery was that it doesn't have to be a parent! It just has to be someone who offers love, acceptance and godly wisdom." Rick Warren Accomplishments from the past year: • Presencing: The lead steward spent an average of approximately 2.5 hours a day five or six days a week being present with over 20 young men in different capacities. • Connecting: Twelve different young men were connected to and participated in activities or programs of nine different existing community organizations. • Organization: The Board of Directors offered guidance and helped to develop an administrative infrastructure and an accountability system for the lead steward. • Personal growth: The lead steward discovered blind spots to life in marginalized communities and continues to seek wisdom in walking with young men and connecting people from different areas of the city. Top goals for the year: • Honor God through different ways of being present to and relating to each other with mutual respect and appreciation. • Introduce a process for getting feedback from teenage boys and young men in the community for educational and enriching introductions, activities, and experiences. • Create more time and space for personal introductions and connections that can grow into friendships over time. • Capture stories that inspire and educate on successes and failures of the community immersion experience. • Begin to create a succession strategy for others led along a similar path (Hang Time Risers Inc. will end on June 30, 2014). 2 Needs Our needs for the upcoming year are as follows: • Volunteers, esp. male volunteers: We need men who are willing to step up and share their gifts, experiences, and wisdom with the younger men in the community. • Creative input: We welcome educational ideas and fun places to meet for learning, fun, and fellowship. • Financial contributions: Donations will be used to fund activities like hosted gatherings and educational learning experiences as well as operational expenses. • Prayer support: Whether individually or in a group setting, prayer support is requested and needed. • Mercy and forgiveness: The lead steward has blind spots and has room for improvement with his verbal communications and ability to effectively organize groups of people.
