why we give
We asked some MDRT Foundation Canada members why they give.
Here is some of what they said:
“I give because I can. I give because I care.”
did you know?
As an MDRT Foundation CANADA supporter or grant sponsor,
“I was brought up to believe that ‘everyone needs
a helping hand’ and ‘giving is receiving’. I recall the
very many good deeds that others have done which
benefited me personally... because of these kinds of
people, there is goodness, peace and hope. I am blessed
with these thoughts and memories and I will always be
giving until my last day.”
“It’s a reflection of my values and perspectives. It
brings smiles all round and back to yourself when
you see that you can make a difference in someone’s
life... how in good conscience, can we not share some
of that!”
“I give to my community because it is this very
community that supports me and my family through
the work that I do.”
CANADA
“I get a feeling of belonging to something
worthwhile. I can make a difference by giving. I
express my passion by where I give. The result of
giving is joy and appreciation. Giving back establishes
a great example for my kids, my peers.”
you have a unique opportunity to showcase your charitable
efforts to current and future clients in your community.
Foundation supporters are recognized as charitable leaders and
agents of change. Donors and volunteers receive recognition
in the Foundation’s Annual Newsletter, as well as at the MDRT
Annual Meeting.

and public officials.
what mdrt means to me
I
n June of 1982, my career in the
Life Insurance business was at a
crossroad. I had left management in
1981, feeling like a failure, (mostly
because I had failed) and was
struggling to make a living and decide
on my future, when I received a call
from Ron Barbaro, my good friend
and mentor. He had just returned
from the MDRT meeting where he
had been nominated to the Executive
Committee, meaning he would be
President in five years. After the
appropriate congratulations, he
told me his first assignment was to
select the Canadian flag bearer for
the Annual Meeting in Dallas the
following year. I offered to help with
some suggestions when he told me he
had already submitted the name and
it was me! I was taken aback and let
him know that at the midway point
in the year, I had less than 1/3 of the
required production. How could I
do more than twice as much in the
next six months as I had done in the
previous six? That’s when he told me,
“You are the best there is at what
you do best and you will be there.”
Almost every working day for the
next six months my phone would ring
and when I answered, I would hear
just two words from Ron, “Be there”
and a click. On December 12th, I had
$977,000 of business and through
another lifelong friend got a referral
to whom I sold a $25,000 policy (nonmedical) and qualified to attend the
1983 AGM in Dallas. When I walked
onto the stage of the convention
center in Dallas proudly waving the
Canadian flag and stood beside the
star of Annie, belting out the hit
song, Tomorrow, I knew that I would
always be a member of MDRT and
have qualified every year since. The
Main Platform of that Dallas meeting
has gone down in history as one of
the best of all time and I had driven to
Dallas with a friend who decided to fly
back to Toronto. I bought six of the
best main platform tapes and listened
to them for three days as I drove back
to Toronto and that entire experience
changed my life and was responsible
for whatever success I have today.
In 1991, as President of the Toronto
Life Underwriters Association (now
Advocis), I wanted to give back to the
community and forged a charitable
gifting program modeled after the
MDRT Foundation, requiring members
to nominate local charities with which
they were involved, in order to receive
a grant from a pool of funds I had
raised for that purpose. One member
brought forward the Palliative
Care Program at SickKids Hospital,
which was grossly underfunded and
in danger of being dismantled by
the hospital for political and public
relations reasons. After hearing of
the plight of many of the families
who wanted to bring their terminally
ill children home for their last weeks
of life, I not only approved the grant
but went about personally raising
additional funds for the Program.
However, that gave rise to the
companies who contributed getting
two receipts from SickKids, which
was against the mandate of their
own charitable gifting program. If
they were going to give any more
money to the Program, they needed
a separate and distinct charitable
receipt. I had to go out and start a
new charitable foundation and so
Care For Kids (Toronto) was born.
Since then, we have raised over
half a million dollars and more
importantly, the awareness of the
hospital and the community to the
needs of families of children with
life limiting illnesses. The Program
at SickKids has now grown from a
single nurse in 1991 into the Paediatric
Advanced Care Team (PACT) with
two doctors, several nurses, social
workers and bereavement counsellors
and an educational arm that teaches
professionals in other hospitals about
advanced care for children with life
limiting illnesses and providing help
to their families. Another foundation
took up the cause and funded and
built Emily’s House, a ten bed, state of
the art temporary home for children
whose parents need some respite from
caring for them or as an alternative
for their end of life care. All of this
has come from my involvement with
MDRT.

G
iving and giving back, what does that mean to you?
As a founding member of the
Calgary Development Task Force in
1976 I helped assure the survival of
Chinatown and its transition into
to one of Canada’s most dynamic
communities. Further, through the
CANADA
Calgary Chinatown Development
Foundation, we built 88 low cost
housing units. In 1981 I received the
Manulife Prestige Community Service
Award for helping fund Cristopher
Koch’s education—he was born
limbless, a victim of thalidomide. At
the Lee Annual Banquet we raise
charitable funds, such as to help
save Hospice Calgary NW, where I
also serve as a Foundation Board
Director. I have done, and continue
to do these things because I believe
it is important to improve our health,
leverage our wealth, and make the
world a better place. I always look
for the best products for all my
clients and inform my colleagues so
they are able to achieve a higher
standard.
Name one great thing about MDRT.
When seeking pertinent information
I can go to a fellow MDRT member
and get correct answers I seek.
Words of encouragement to join
MDRT. The benefits you have gotten
from MDRT.
Lifetime learner, repetition from
MDRT to Top of the Table and learn
to adapt and change. Today, MDRT
is like one huge family. Through my
volunteering, I have met people from
around the world, have considered
them great friends from as far away
as Australia, Mumbai, Beijing, Malta,
and many more to come.
What does the MDRT Foundation
mean to you, and what do you hope
to accomplish?
By sitting on the Board of
MDRTFoundation Canada, we
leverage each other’s knowledge and
connections, are able to raise more
funds, and so fulfill the principle
of the Foundation, which is to
encourage members to participate
in giving back, to help in their own
respective communities, Canada and
the World.
Your top life lesson of being an
outstanding member in your
community.
The service to humanity is the best
work of life. To stay motivated I had
designated a time management
system that re-inforces healthy
habits, and make sure I spend/invest
my time wisely.
Richard Y. Lee, MDRT Top of the
Table Member
F
rom the time I joined the
life insurance industry, I
was dreaming of qualifying
and becoming a member of the
Million Dollar Round Table. I
did qualify in the very first full
year. Now, I was asked to attend
these meetings. It seemed like an
expensive proposition. I made many
sacrifices to attend the meeting .
These meetings changed my entire
perspective of how I view my
profession and the world. I became
a better professional and a better
person. I was taught ethics and I
also learnt that the noblest thing
to do is to do, what is right for the
client. I learnt many more things
that helped me in my profession, my
family life and also my involvement
in the community. One of those
meetings introduced me to the
Canadian Million Dollar Foundation.
I gave them some money. Later,
I volunteered to be a part of the
telethon; one of their fund raising
events. I met some very talented and
brilliant people who were there to
give to this foundation and much
more to the communities around the
country. Now, I was hooked; to the
work of the Foundation and all their
activities. They are in the business of
giving and granting hope to many
that are needy and deserve help , all
throughout the country. I have seen
and heard of the stories of successes
from some of the recipients of the
Grant. You are performing miracles
every day, The Canadian Million
Dollar Round Table. Thank you for
letting me have a minor role in the
activities of this foundation. I now
know, that “giving” is as rewarding
and satisfying as receiving.
It has been a thrill and an honour
being a part of this organization.
I have come to know so many
wonderful people that give so much
of themselves to this wonderful
organization.
My sincerest admiration and
appreciation to all these people and
also to those that endorse, support
and give to this and many other
great causes.

gifts of hope are changing lives
Through the generosity of our membership, The Million Dollar Round Table Foundation Canada awards grants
annually to a variety of charities in communities across Canada. Funded by top life insurance professionals, the
Foundation awards up to $5,000 per request to worthy grassroots charitable projects recommended by MDRT
Foundation Canada’s members.
The Foundation operates on the basis that successful people in the life insurance industry want to BE THE
CHANGE, give back to their communities, and that joining together in this effort is far more effective than going
it alone. We often give grants to smaller charities that do not receive government or corporate funding. We also
target more well-known charities such as Red Cross and Special Olympics.
Grassroots Charities supported by the MDRT Foundation Canada reflect the caring and sharing spirit of the
profession and industry.
Be sure to have your application in before the deadline of July 15, 2014 and keep Being The Change in your

there are so many ways you can be the change
pick a cause, apply for a grant
This is a big part of what makes MDRT
Foundation Canada so special. Our members
directly select worthwhile charities within
their communities, or around the world,
apply for a grant, and these become the
charities your Foundation focuses on.
There is nothing like the feeling of showing
up at the charity’s door with a cheque in
your hand.
The gratitude is real. The memory is long.
And should someone connected to the
charity need financial advice there is a good
chance they will turn to you.
The need is great. Some of our Knights
uncover very worthwhile charities that may
not have reached the size or status of a
federally funded charity.
Be the Knight this year and embrace the
desire to make a difference in the lives of
others. Create your legacy of hope and
change for a better tomorrow.

president’s message
It has been an honor, and I have learned much in my 1st year as President alongside my fellow Directors on the
Foundation’s Board. As a collective voice we are striving to reach out to more of your communities, TO BE THE
CHANGE. I encourage all of our membership to support their grassroots charity of choice so your Foundation can help
you grant the financial assistance needed to create brighter futures for those in need.
Your Foundation has implemented new initiatives this year, such as a redesigned website and our 1st Annual
Valentine’s Silent Auction. It was indeed a special Valentines celebration this year for many of our members who not
only treated their loved ones with a gift, but granted hope at the same time…. We thank all those who donated and
all those who placed bids. Next year it will be even bigger and better.
Our 4th Christmas Campaign was another growing success story for our membership.
This year your Board of Directors is also focused on strengthening relationships with insurance and financial
companies to further enhance MDRT Foundation Canada’s efforts.
Overall our strategic efforts are yielding increased visibility for the Foundation, and this in turns feeds back into our
ability to attract the funds needed to continue to help change lives for the better. It’s a virtuous loop.
I would like to thank my fellow Board members for their continued efforts on behalf of your Foundation and also
commend our capable Executive Director, Joanne Taylor, on her enthusiastic passion and outstanding management
skills.
Through the generous commitments of long time members the Foundation is able to reach out and be the change in
our communities across Canada. We look forward to seeing you all at the MDRT Annual Meeting in Toronto this year.
