COAST TO COAST SPEAKER SERIES
Dietitians of Canada is pleased to present
MOVING BEYOND DIETARY
REQUIREMENTS: OPTIMAL
EATING (AND EXERCISING)
TO AGE SUCCESSFULLY
PRESENTATION
The Dietary Reference Intakes, Recommended Dietary Allowance
(RDA) and Acceptable Intakes form the basis of dietary planning.
However, the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges
(AMDR) offers a great deal of flexibility in terms of macronutrient
intakes, as to what is deemed healthy.
In our haste to lower blood lipids and reduce cardiovascular disease
risk a large focus has been placed on carbohydrate and fat;
unfortunately, protein is often left out. In fact, a large discrepancy
exists between the RDA for protein at 0.8g protein/kg/day which is,
for most, below the lowest end of the protein intake inherent in the
AMDR, which states that anywhere from 10-35% of total energy
intake from protein is acceptable. As we age, a forgotten aspect of
health is our skeletal muscle. A central tenet of this presentation
will be how higher protein intakes (than the RDA):
a. are not deleterious for bones and kidneys as is so often claimed;
b. will protect skeletal muscle mass and function;
c. are an excellent way to prevent weight gain; and,
d. when dairy protein sources are consumed, can augment bone
health and help change body composition.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After attending this seminar, participants will understand:
1. the importance of skeletal muscle in overall health and its
critical role in successful aging
2. the role that high quality dietary protein can play in assisting
with the maintenance of skeletal muscle
3. the importance of timing of protein ingestion on maintenance
of optimal skeletal muscle mass and strength, and the myths
of dietary protein in causing kidney damage and promoting
bone loss.
SPEAKER: Dr. Stuart Phillips, PhD, FACN, FACSM
Dr. Stuart Phillips, PhD, FACN, FACSM is a Professor, Department of
Kinesiology, Adjunct Professor, Medicine (Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation) and Associate Member of the Graduate Faculty in
Medical Science (Cell Biology & Metabolism) at McMaster
University, IWC in Hamilton ON. His research is focused on the
impact of nutrition and exercise on human skeletal muscle protein
turnover. As well he is keenly interested in diet and exerciseinduced changes in body composition. A large part of his research
is aimed at application of novel nutrition and exercise paradigms
in modulating body composition to achieve optimal health in a
variety of states including aging and cancer treatment.
