Lesson 1001: Alphabet Symmetry Age range: 4+ Curriculum areas: The National Curriculum in England, July 2014, Mathematics Geometry – Properties of Shapes Geometry – Position and Direction Key Stage 1 (years 1 & 2) Lower Key Stage 2 (years 3 & 4) Equipment you'll need : Flexible, double sided, plastic mirrors. Variety of sizes available from £1 per pack at www.betaeducation.co.uk Pencils, rulers and erasers. How to prepare: Give each child a copy of the hand out below, along with a flexible plastic mirror and stationary. The lesson: We are going to look at capital letters of the alphabet to see if they are symmetrical and how many lines of symmetry there are. Line of Symmetry: If you can reflect (or flip) a figure over a line and the figure appears unchanged, then the figure has reflection symmetry or line symmetry. The line that you reflect over is called the line of symmetry. A line of symmetry divides a figure into two mirror-image halves. Explain to the class that they should hold the mirror up on it's edge, both vertically and horizontally, through the centre of each letter. They can then look at the reflection to see if the letter is symmetrical. They can then record their findings by writing YES or NO in the relevant columns. Encourage the children to draw the line of symmetry onto the letter. Can they guess which letters have a vertical or horizontal line of symmetry? How many other shapes can they name, that have a vertical or horizontal line of symmetry? Do any letters have a different line of symmetry? The letter X? The letter O? © Beta Education Ltd.
