SCIENTIFIC WORKING GROUP ON
THROMBOCYTOPENIAS AND PLATELET FUNCTION DISORDERS
SWG FOCUS AND MISSION
The EHA SWG on Thrombocytopenias was established at the EHA Congress in Lyon 2003. The
group subsequently expanded its field of interest with the inclusion of platelet function disorders.
The purposes of the group are:
• To promote education and instruction in platelet disorders.
• To develop guidelines for diagnosis and/or treatment of thrombocytopenias and platelet
function disorders.
• To promote clinical and laboratory studies on thrombocytopenias and platelet function
disorders. The studies are conducted under the auspices of the EHA-SWG, but are open to
collaboration with all interested researchers.
The SWG includes the following subcommittees:
• Adult ITP Francesco Rodeghiero (Italy)
• Childhood ITP ‐ Thomas Kühne (Switzerland)
• Platelets and hemostasis - Ingrid Pabinger (Austria)
• Inherited thrombocytopenias - Alessandro Pecci (Italy)
• Inherited and acquired platelet function disorders - Paolo Gresele (Italy)
• HIT - Andreas Greinacher (Germany)
• Biology of Megakaryocytes and thrombopoiesis - Nichola Cooper (United Kingdom)
• Thrombotic microangiopathies - Marie Scully (United Kingdom)
Chair Carlo L. Balduini, IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo Foundation and University of Pavia, Pavia,
Italy. ([email protected])

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST OF THE BOARD
Board members may participate in clinical trials sponsored by pharmaceutical. They may have also
spoken at meetings and given consultative advice for companies during the development of novel
therapies. The working party aims to maintain professional working relationships with the
2
pharmaceutical companies, but also wants to act without any conflict in clinical trials, and in
establishing diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines.

ACTIVITIES
EHA-SWG Scientific Meeting
Given the success of the EHA-SWG Scientific Meeting on Focus on thrombocytopenia and
disorders of platelet function held in Lisbon 27 to 29 September 2013, this SWG, in collaboration
with the SWG on Bleeding and thrombosis, organized a new Scientific Meeting on Hemostasis
imbalance: Critical issues and Therapeutic approaches that was held in Barcelona from 18 to 20
September 2015. 100 participants from 24 countries attended the meeting, mostly European, but
also from Australia, Asia and North America. The evaluation by participant showed that the
meeting was greatly appreciated: 87% of the attendees would recommend the meeting to their
colleagues, and the same percentage indicated that their objectives were achieved. The meeting
was assessed by delegates with an average score of 8.3 (out of 10).
EHA Scientific Conference
This SWG, together with the SWG Bleeding and Thrombosis, had a major role in organizing the
EHA Scientific Conference ‘Bleeding disorders: increase your knowledge and improve patient
3
care!’ to be held 14 to 17 September 2016 in Barcelona. This event has been endorsed by the
International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

The annual meeting at the EHA congress has been held at the 20th Congress in Vienna.
•
The proposal for the 2016 meeting to be held at the 21th Congress in Copenhagen has been
