Make
Happen
“Make Change Happen…” was the theme for our 5th Annual Catholic Charities Gala held on May 10th at the Davenport Hotel. This wonderful
event promotes and benefits the programs of Catholic Charities while also highlighting the individuals who partner with us in our mission to serve
those in need.
Rob McCann, Executive Director, shared how much Catholic Charities has grown and the breadth of our services to the vulnerable. John and Lori
Moloney, Honorary Co-chairs of the event, expressed the importance of charity and service to our community in need...encouraging everyone to
support Catholic Charities by praying, volunteering and providing monetary gifts to assist the programs.
Stan Miller, local artist, entertained the audience with an upside-down Quick Draw of Monsignor Frank Bach and revealed a watercolor portrait
that will hang at Father Bach Haven, Catholic Charities newest housing complex.
Annual awards were presented to the Volunteer of the Year, Donna Hanson and Bishop’s Medal recipients. Look to the right for award bios.
Gracious thanks to our Gala Sponsors, to Tracy Jewelers for the gift of exquisite jewelry for our Raffle, to NXNW for producing our newest video,
“We are Catholic Charities,” and to all who attended and continue to help us “Make Change Happen!”
THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING GALA SPONSORS AND ALL OUR WONDERFUL GUESTS!

Their unwavering support for Catholic
Charities is unending. Beth has served as a vigilant volunteer through the
Volunteer Services program offering housekeeping, rides and assistance
to the elderly, and companionship to individuals who have no one else in
their lives. Jim and Beth both support every fundraising effort and special
events at Catholic Charities. Beth is a Catholic Charities Foundation
member and gives valuable insight to the Board and administrative staff.
They are true and integral partners in Catholic Charities’ mission to serve.
They are a gift to their families, this community and the Catholic Charities
world and incredibly deserving of the 2013 Bishop’s Medal.
DONNA HANSON AWARD
Nadine Van Stone, Director of St.
Margaret’s Shelter is a true visionary and
servant leader. Her vision has resulted in
a program that is recognized by local and
national funding organizations as a “best
practice”—a program that other shelters
are encouraged to emulate. Her vision
was to create a program that served its
families in every life dimension so that they
not only received emergency shelter, but
more importantly, were given opportunities,
training and support in order to be selfsufficient. Her vision was realized. She is best described as the matriarch of the
family—the one you know is ultimately the driving force but, at the same time,
who nurtures relationships that encourage and foster leadership among her
“family members” so that all are enabled to do amazing things with confidence,
skill and support. Inspirational, a visionary, and a true servant leader. All perfect
descriptions of this year’s Donna Hanson award recipient—
Marguerite Daltoso first volunteered as a member of the Advisory Council

Jim and Beth Brasch were awarded
the 2013 Bishop’s Medal by Bishop Blase
Cupich. Jim and Beth have been dedicated
stewards of Catholic Charities, the Diocese
and the Spokane community. They both
generously volunteer time serving on
boards and committees and helping chair
campaigns. Their commitment to their
families and faith is evident in all they do.
Sacrificing their time in order to assist
others is truly in their hearts.

for Catholic Charities Walla Walla nine years ago. During that time she has
worked tirelessly to help Catholic
Charities continue its mission of working
collaboratively to serve those in need.
For months each year she leads the
charge in organizing the Annual St.
Patrick’s Day Celebration and fundraiser
by recruiting volunteers, creating the
menu, developing a marketing plan,
and gathering decorations. Over 700
people have attended the event each
year raising thousands of dollars to help
those in need.
Marguerite makes each person she
interacts with feel special and appreciated. She is an example of love in her
actions, her words, her work, and her compassion…a perfect recipient for the
2013 Volunteer of the Year!

St. Margaret’s Shelter
Wellness Program
Every year, St. Margaret’s Shelter
conducts a Wellness Program
aimed at increasing awareness
and practice of healthy habits
in our community. This year our
participants each set their own
goals related to wellness —many
were excited to lose weight,
increase the amount of fresh
fruits and vegetables in their
diets, decrease their stress, and
Jyny and Mavric
integrate healthy habits into the
lives of their kids.
We are extremely grateful to the Lilac Bloomsday
Association for enabling us to offer free registration to
18 of our Wellness Program participants this year! It
was a hot day for a race, but everyone had a wonderful
time and enjoyed the fruits of their hard work.
Make a Lasting Difference
Your perpetual or legacy gift to the Catholic Charities Foundation
is an easy and meaningful way to make a lasting and life-changing
difference for people who are most in need – the homeless, the
displaced, and the most vulnerable. In addition to assisting those who
most need our help, your current gift or future bequest can provide a
significant tax benefit. Please contact us for additional information.

A Shout out to
St. charles School
for hosting a
diaper drive!
Thank you to Mrs. Severing’s
5th grade class and Mrs. Pendergest’s
8th grade class who collected 10,000
diapers for the CAPA program at
Catholic Charities. This doubled their
diaper drive from last year.
We are blessed and truly
appreciate the servant spirit
of St. Charles students.
