God’s Mission For Trinity:
No. 11
Serving  Sharing  Caring  Teaching
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
What a beautiful Sunday we had October 26th, Reformation Sunday. I want to say thank
you to the choir, Ann Samuelson, Ingrid Harrison, Dr. Bill Unsderfer, and the youth for a
wonderful dinner after worship. Praise God for those who work so hard for the fellowship
of believers.
Thanksgiving and Advent are quickly approaching. This will be my first Thanksgiving and
Christmas in Salina and I watch in anticipation the events and activities around the city. I am also excited to see
the many different events that are happening at church. We have a wonderful opportunity to share the gospel
message in a variety of events, such as: Brian Young with Creation Instruction Association on November 16th,
the youth attending the District Youth Gathering, a Blue Christmas (support for those grieving), Thanksgiving
Eve service, and of course Divine Worship every Sunday morning and evening, midweek Voyagers program,
and many different Bible studies.
Coming up the last Sunday of November is youth Sunday (since it is the fifth Sunday of the month), and is also
designated as Stewardship Sunday. God has given to each of us spiritual gifts of many different varieties.
Stewardship is not something we must do as though we are able to fulfill some kind of law, but an opportunity to
give back to God that which he has so richly blessed each of us with.
You will soon find in your mailbox a piece of paper showing you an opportunity to commit to your stewardship for
the Lord of the church. Please prayerfully look at where your stewardship is now and what kind of commitment
can be made for 2015. Then on the last Sunday in the month of November, please bring that commitment to
church with you to bring forward during the service to place in the commitment box. There is no need for you to
put your name on the commitment, and no one is making you do this commitment. This is just to guide and help
prepare for the next year.
God's blessings to each of you!

are finally getting settled at Asbury Village in Olathe. We love our new home and very few boxes left to unpack.
It is a joy to live close to our son, Dan and grandchildren. Surprise! The Vern Laubhan’s have already visited
us! Be sure to drop by when you come to KC. May the Lord’s Blessings continue to be with you. Love to allHarold & Elvera Miller

Guaranteed to be an eye opening blessing.
On Sunday, November 16th, members of Trinity will have the chance to meet and listen to Brian Young from
the Creation Instruction Association two times!!! Brian will present “Amazing Animals” to all classes during the
Education Hour at 9:45 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. he will present ”Dinosaurs, Ice-Age and the Pre-flood World” to
Trinity members and to the community. He is a fascinating speaker and will address many topics including:
> Animals such as the giraffe, bombardier beetle, fly, whale, dog, boxfish, cuddle fish, octopus, spider, gecko,
butterflies, bees and more to show that evolution could not happen.
> Are dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible?
> Did dinosaurs live with people? Were they on the ark?
> How old is the earth?
A potluck lunch will be held after the 11:00 service to make it more convenient for you to come to Brian’s
1:30 presentation. Bring food to share and bring your friends and family.
More about Brian Young: Brian is a nationally known speaker, author of several books and founder of Creation
Instruction Association. He has written for various magazines and journals. Brian also served as a teacher and

College and Young Adult Class
Adult Classes
SHEPHERD’S FLOCK
Leader: David Samuelson
Leader: Christal Lantz
The CYA class is starting a new Bible study. It is a
CPH book by Cindy Steinbock, “The Vine Speaks”
Eleven Lessons from John 15. We are the living
branches of The Vine-Jesus Christ. We are grafted to
Him; He nourishes us with His Sacrament. He speaks
to us in His Word. Using imagery and metaphor of the
vineyard, “The Vine Speaks”, is a conversational Bible
study rooted in Jesus’ words in John 15. Each of these
eleven lessons explores how Christ works in us by
drawing lessons from the seasons of the vineyard, from
the lives of the apostles, from the author’s experiences,
and from our own circumstances and perspectives.
The Shepherd’s Flock will continue their study of the
twelve Minor Prophets. The class has studied
Hosea and Joel and will study Amos next.
SAINTS & SINNERS
Leader: Bill Daugherty
Saints & Sinners continue their study called
"Courageous Heroes of the Faith" authored by
Gary and Carol Dunker from Lincoln, Nebraska. In
an era of great challenge, this study highlights these
men and women in the Bible who overcame
extraordinary difficulties: Noah, Rahab, Jonathan,
Hezekiah, Mary & Martha, and Apollos. Their stories
show that God chooses ordinary people--people like
us--to do His extraordinary work.
Jr. & Sr. High Class
Leader: Pastor Shawn
CHRISTIAN PARENTING
Leader: Bill Unsderfer
The Jr. & Sr. High Youth are studying the book of John.
The class is just beginning a new study: “Effective
Parenting in a Defective World: How to Raise
Kids Who Stand Out from the Crowd” by Chip
Ingram who shares God’s timeless principles for
raising children. Packed with practical advice this
study gives struggling parents a clear vision for their
children’s future and life changing help for today.
Children
The children continue to support the Mission Project,
Let Me Learn of Jesus.
~~ MEN’S BIBLE BREAKFAST ~~
Leader: Pastor Shawn
6:30 - 7:30 a.m. ~ Wednesdays at Appletree
The Men’s Wednesday Morning Bible Breakfast group are studying the book of Romans.
~~ WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY ~~
Leaders: Sharon Johnson, Phyllis Von Fange & Betty Groves
9:30 - 10:30 a.m. ~ Wednesdays at Trinity
On November 5 the class will finish watching the musical “In the Beginning”. Starting November 12, they will
begin a new study book “Golden Fruit” by Julie Hale Maschhoff. Based on the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23),
this session will help us as Christian women to put our roles as daughters, wives, sisters, friends, mothers, and
grandmas into perspective as we study women like Ruth (love), Elizabeth (joy), Hannah (peace), Mary, mother
of Jesus (patience), Abigail (kindness), Dorcas (goodness), Deborah (faithfulness), Mary, sister of Martha
(gentleness), and Esther (self-control), and can then see how God is at work in our lives now and how His
promise of salvation and peace thru Jesus is fully ours all the time. We invite new ladies to consider joining
us in this study for the laughter, friendship and look at God’s Word that it brings. While books will be
furnished by the church, let Phyllis know (827-3184) if you plan to attend so we can make sure to have enough
on hand.
~~ MORNING STAR BIBLE STUDY ~~
Leader: Pastor Shawn
10:30 - 11:30 a.m. ~ Thursdays at Trinity
Join this popular study and enjoy Christian fellowship and a cup of coffee as you study the scripture lessons for
the coming Sunday and give Pastor helpful feedback about his preaching.

On Friday, October 3rd, several of our middle school members and their adult leaders
headed to Williamsburg for the Kansas District Junior High Rally. Thank you for praying
for a safe return! A great time was had by all with car ride games, scavenger hunt where
all survived the Purple Forest Hippos, other fun activities, good food and lots of songs
and lessons about the truest love of all from our Savior Jesus Christ.
On Sunday, October 5th, our senior high members gathered and headed to Wichita for a
senior high sneak. They had a blast, as well, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Several youth and parents signed up for the Community Clean-Up on Saturday,
October 18th. They helped Salina and had a great time volunteering where needed!
We want to say thank you again to the congregation for all the support given to our youth
programs. A big thanks to Jolene Albrecht and Douglas McCourtney for heading up the
Thank You Dinner on October 26th, and Brenda Forte for helping with decorations and
Leah Werling with her work on the presentation among all the hours of youth prep and
work to put on this fun event!
Also, thank you to the newest Board of Youth members for offering to be of service and helping grow the amount
of youth and events at Trinity including Courtney Berndt, Isaac George and Sarah McAllister. We are so thankful
to have such amazing youth leading the way.

Open Sundays, before, during
and after Sunday School
New DVD for children is...The League of Incredible Vegetables by VeggieTales. Dr. Flurry, the chillin’ villain,
comes to town to freeze the city. LarryBoy turns to the Incredible Vegetables for help but their own fears may
land them in Dr. Flurry’s deep freeze. Will they remember to turn to the One who is bigger than all their fears?
This is a lesson in handling fear.
New to library is...The Pastor’s Wife by Savina Wurmbrand. This is the true story of the author to get her
husband released after being arrested in Romania for Christian activities. Even after her own imprisonment she
continues to help build a Christian Underground Church in restricted areas around the world. The message of
this book is that Christians are still being imprisoned by communists.
Book 2 in Indiana Cousins series is...A Cousin’s Prayer by Wanda E. Brunstetter. After a horrible accident a
year earlier, Katie returns to her Amish community still struggling with panic attacks and depression. What will it
take for her to overcome her fears and dare to live? Thanks to Staci Timm for this book.
Available is...Answers Magazine. This issue is designed to bring glory and proper credit to God who made our
wonderful creation. Articles include our marvelous human immune system, which can tailor cures to almost any
new infection. Also a report on how creation is taught in conservative Christian universities and a look at
Creationist’s best friend (Allosaurus) and much more. In Kids Answers, the mini-magazine teaches the account
of God’s judgment at the Tower of Babel and the consequences of this rebellion against God. Thanks to
Gary Von Fange for this gift.
Also new is...One Glorious Ambition by Jane Kirkpatrick. The author brings
historical reformer Dorothea Dix to life as she combines historical accuracy with the
narrative of a woman who recognized suffering when others turned away, and the
call she heeded to change the world. Thanks to Sonja Welch for this book.

EBOLA: THE OLD AND THE NEW!
I have been a nurse for 57 years and have never seen a case of Ebola; however, it has
existed for many decades (the OLD) with Africa being the main center for sporadic outbreaks
of the disease. There it has been found in monkeys, chimps and fruit bats. A milder form has
also been found in the Philippines in monkeys and pigs.
Body—Mind—Spirit
The Ebola virus lives in animal hosts and humans can contact it from infected
animals. Experts suspect the virus is transmitted to humans through animal’s bodily fluids.
For example, through eating the infected animals (blood transmission) or to scientists who have operated on
infectious animals. Some workers who work in African caves may contact the virus through animal waste
products (feces and/or urine).
After the initial transmission from animal to human, the virus can be spread from person to person
through contact with body fluids or contaminated needles. Medical centers in Africa are so poor that they reuse
needles and syringes. Some of the worst Ebola outbreaks have occurred because contaminated injection
equipment was not sterilized between uses. Medical personnel also can become infected if they don’t wear
protective gear such as gowns, masks and gloves. If the method of removing the gown and gloves is not done
according to protocol it may lead to transmission of the virus and cause the disease. Family members are often
infected when caring for a sick relative or preparing the dead for burial. That is why the body is often burned.
For most people in the world, the risk of contracting Ebola is low; however, risk is greatly increased if you:
*Travel to Africa, especially where outbreaks have occurred.
*Conduct research on monkeys imported from Africa or the Philippines.
*Eat bush meat.
*Don’t wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use 60% alcohol after each contact.
*Provide medical or personal care without wearing protective gear.
*Prepare people who have died from Ebola for burial.
Ebola virus is related to viruses that cause hemorrhagic fevers—illnesses marked by severe bleeding,
organ failure and, in many cases death. Symptoms usually begin abruptly within 5—10 days of contact to
exposure. Early symptoms include: fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, chills, and weakness. Later
symptoms include: nausea and vomiting, diarrhea (may be bloody), red eyes, raised rash, chest pain and cough,
stomach pain, severe weight loss, bleeding, usually from eyes and bruising. People near death may bleed from
other orifices such as ears, nose, and rectum. Internal bleeding may also be present.
Ebola is difficult to diagnose because early signs resemble those of other diseases, such as typhoid and
malaria. If doctors suspect Ebola, they use blood tests which can quickly identify the Ebola virus.
The medical community is scrambling to find treatment for this deadly virus. So far there is no FDA
approved treatments or vaccines for Ebola. Supportive hospital care can help the body fight off the virus. These
treatments include IV fluids, maintaining oxygen levels, maintaining a steady blood pressure, treating any other
infection that occurs secondary to the Ebola infection, and blood transfusions for those who have lost blood.
Those who survive the disease develop antibodies in their blood that protects them for up to 10 years. This
blood is also being tried for those who have just contacted the virus with the hope that these antibodies will be
helpful to those currently ill.
Two drugs (the NEW) are being tried and have proven somewhat helpful. Z-Mapp is a drug that is a
combination of 3 antibiotics designed to fuse to the protein of the Ebola virus and deactivates it. The second
drug TKM-Ebola is being made in Canada and was approved in September in Canada. Both of these drugs
have been well tolerated and used in some of the recent cases.
Vaccines (the NEW) are being developed, but vaccines as well as the two above drugs are in extremely
low supply and production takes about 6 months. Vaccines are expected to be more widely available by 2016.

2014 Parade of Lights
Saturday, November 22nd
Trinity and Christ the King are again working together to build a float for Salina's Annual Parade of Lights which
will start at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, with a parade route on Santa Fe Ave. from Elm to Prescott
Street. This year’s float will be the same set up as last year’s float. Handouts of candy canes with our church
information will again be handed out. Final construction of the float will take place on November 22 at 1:00pm in
Trinity's parking lot (volunteers are welcome to join us for construction). The Board of Outreach invites you to
come and ride on the float, sing along with the CD as well as attend the "After Glow" party. CTK is also
furnishing cookies for this party. If you can't ride the float from Trinity then plan to be at the corner of 7th and
Elm at 5:30 p.m. so you can either ride on the float or walk and help hand out the candy canes and church
information. We hope to see you all there.

Stewardship Sunday is November 30th.
The Stewardship Board approved the 2015 Ministry Plan to be sent on to Parish Planning with minimal increases
except for the Board of Property which is requesting funds for significant repair items, plus funds to move the
garage to the south end of the parking lot to free up space near the church entrance.
We are getting closer to finding a student to adopt, so stay tuned for further updates.
There will be an envelope party on Monday, November 24 at the church when we will prepare next year’s
envelopes. Everyone is invited to attend.
The Stewardship Committee would like to thank Lowell Eberle for all of his years as a counter. Lowell, thank you
for all of the time you gave to this part of God’s mission.
Tuesday, October 21st — A meeting of the Thrivent Service Team, held at Trinity Hall, was attended by 11
members. John Charles and Joyce Wilhelm served as hosts and provided fried chicken for the 6:00 pm potluck
meal.
Trinity’s Choice Dollars: Still available for grants after the September deposit is $3,332.24. The following
special grant requests were received and approved at the October 21 meeting:
$ 700.00 for cost of handicap railing installed along outside entrance ramp--Board of Property
$1900.00 less special donations for 16 round tables and 2 storage carts--Board of Property
$ 300.00 for extra supplies for Lutheran World Relief Kits needed in 2015--LWML
After funding above grants, money still available for grants will be $432.24 plus whatever special donations are
received for the round tables.
Recently, not very many Choice Dollars have been deposited to Trinity's account. If you haven’t let Thrivent
know you still want Trinity to receive your Choice Dollars, it’s easy to do and needs to be done each year! If
you're not sure you've done this, just follow these steps:
Step 1. Call 1-800-847-4836 and when prompted say “Thrivent Choice.”
Step 2. When prompted, say “Choice Dollars.”
Step 3. Press 1 to direct Choice Dollars.
Step 4. Say or enter your Social Security number when prompted.
Step 5. A rep will then work with you to direct your Choice Dollars to Trinity.
Sunday, November 23rd — Will be the Annual Dinner and Chapter meeting of Saline Valley Thrivent Financial
to be held at Gutierrez Mexican Restaurant, 640 Westport Blvd., at 6:00 p.m. Dinner and entertainment will be
provided at no cost. In addition, board members will review the highlights of the past year and the annual

Thursday, October 9, World Relief Truck Loaded: The group at Trinity worked from 8:00 am to noon. We
especially thank all the men and ladies who helped with this and those who served lunch to the workers.
Besides Salina, there were three other loading centers at Wichita, Hays and Topeka, with the LWR warehouse in
Baltimore MD as the final destination. There were donations for the Salina loading from 34 different churches, a
total of 612 boxes weighing 13,078#, of which 626# were from Trinity. Trinity's contribution included: 49
personal care kits, 14 fabric kits, 81 school kits and 453 bars of soap, thanks to all the soap donations. In
addition we sent 54 quilts (a total of 85 were made this last work year with 14 to Orphan Grain Train, 2 to the
Camp Tomah Shinga auction and the others being distributed locally). We thank all who helped with donations
this year for the kits and quilts, including a $200 grant from Thrivent Choice Dollars, plus all those faithful
workers whose many hours of work made it possible for us to put together so many colorful quilts and kits.
Thursday, October 16, LWML Assembly Guest Night Potluck: There were 32 LWML members and 30
guests who enjoyed the fellowship and good food. A humorous skit was presented by Dianne Haubein,
Christian Life Chair, and her faithful assistants, husband Wendell, Jeanie Hemmy and Jim Hames. Linda
Smittle, daughter of Alice Rahmeier, provided a background on the Peace Corps and a pictorial review of her
experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa for the past 2 years. She handed out rubber bands to illustrate
her theme of stretching herself and encouraged those present to stretch themselves by being open to trying new
experiences and ways to serve others.
Saturday, October 18, Zone Fall Meeting at Trinity, Salina: There were 46 in attendance, including 13 from
Trinity. Pastor Russell Bonine, Zone Counselor, Haven, presented the Bible study and Linda Smittle presented
another power-point review on her recent Peace Corps work in Africa. A special Mite offering of $230.39 was
received toward current LWML mission projects. An ingathering for the Salina Food Bank enabled us to provide
many helpful items to replenish their supplies for the coming winter. These generous donations are listed below.

A CALL TO PRAYER
We invite each member of Trinity to give prayerful consideration to whether Trinity’s
Prayer Chain Ministry might be a way God is calling you to serve. In addition to the
Sunday morning Prayer & Praise insert sheet that invites all members to pray for special
needs of our fellow members, Trinity has an active Prayer Chain Ministry. To join and
serve, all you need do is sign the commitment form shown below and notify
Phyllis Von Fange (827-3184), who currently serves as coordinator for this ministry. You
will then be added to our list according to your preference of either a morning or evening
chain and sent more information on it.
“Prayer Chain Hotline! Call your prayer requests to ...” These are the introductory words used every Sunday in
our church bulletins and are also added to the calendar printed in our monthly newsletters. Anyone can initiate
an emergency or special needs prayer by calling it in to one of the two quarterly contact persons listed for
special and emergency prayers. The contact persons in turn call someone in each of our four Prayer Chain
groups (two in the morning and two in the evening) who each continue calling down their prayer chain list. We
also want to give special thanks to those ladies who serve as contact persons each quarter.
The goal of our Prayer Chain is to provide an opportunity for us to show love and concern as we lift up people’s
needs to the Lord in response to His promise that “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth
much.” (Jas. 5:16 KJV) and His command that we should “Pray all the time. Ask God for anything in line with
the Holy Spirit’s wishes. Plead with Him, reminding Him of your needs and keep praying earnestly for all
Christians everywhere.” (Eph. 6:18 TLB) Responding to and passing along prayer requests is one way we can
do this.
We pray the Holy Spirit will give more individuals a desire to serve and commit to this work of love. Current
members wishing to be moved to a new time slot, should also let Phyllis know. We would like to be able to
provide an updated copy of our Prayer Chain list to all participants around the first of the new year 2015.
Prayer Chain Commitment
Lord, I dedicate myself to the responsibility of being a member of Trinity’s Prayer Chain.
I prefer to be on a [ ]morning [ ]evening chain.
