ProductProfile Sodium Sulfate, Anhydrous Baker Analyzed® ACS Reagent Powder Product Number 3898 Na2SO4 THE BAKER ADVANTAGE: BAKER ANALYZED® Sodium Sulfate, Anhydrous, Powder has lower trace anion (e.g., Cl-,PO33-) contamination than Industry Standards. Lower ion contamination provides superior performance in many analytical techniques, especially electrochemistry. Performance in biological applications is enhanced with J.T.Baker’s low trace metal content (metals alter the activity of biomolecules). Additionally, J.T.Baker’s high assay specification provides valuable purity information to assist in making precise buffer solutions. Description: Odorless, white powder. Manufacturing Process: Reagent grade Sodium Sulfate is manufactured via solution chemistry. Reagent grade Sulfuric Acid and Reagent grade Sodium Hydroxide are combined in a stainless steel reactor. The resulting solution is filtered and passed to a steam jacketed evaporator, where the solution is dried to form the anhydrous powder. The powder is then blended and ground for homogeneity into 5–10,000 lb. lots. Reaction: 2NaOH + H2SO4 → Na2SO4 + 2H2O Helpful Hints for Accurate Experiments: Anhydrous Sodium Sulfate is very hygroscopic. When making up precise solutions (especially for protein precipitations and counter ion chromatography), it is desirable to dry the Sodium Sulfate before weighing. Drying at 120°C for 2–4 hours is sufficient to return the salt to the anhydrous form. Cool the dried powder in a desiccant before weighing. Applications: • Drying Agent • Kjeldahl Analysis • Buffers • Polarography • Environmental Analysis Product Listing: FW: 142.04 Product Number 3898 Size Box Qty. 500 g 4 × 500 g CAS Number: 7757-82-6 2.5 kg 12 kg Availability: Please contact your local J.T.Baker Distributor, or call 1-800-JTBAKER (1-800-582-2537). The pH of a 5% solution of pure Sodium Sulfate, Anhydrous should be 7.2 at 25°C. Chloride (Cl) 0.001% 0.0005% 0.001% Chloride is a competing anion to Sulfate and can interfere in polarographic techniques. Nitrogen Compounds (as N) 5 ppm 5 ppm 5 ppm Nitrogen compounds can be introduced with the Sodium Hydroxide feedstock. We minimize these competing ions to provide more consistent performance in buffer and electro-chemical applications. Low Nitrogen is also critical for Kjeldahl Analysis. Heavy Metals (as Pb) 5 ppm 3 ppm 5 ppm * Iron (Fe) 0.001% J.T.Baker monitors levels of heavy metals (Ag, As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Mo, Pb, Sb, and Sn), as well as iron. Controlling the level of metals is extremely important to all biological work. Metals alter the activity of sensitive biological molecules. Knowing the assay is important when making up precise solutions and when using the regent as a drying agent. These common impurities can be introduced from the Sodium Hydroxide feedstock. This test assures they have been minimized and allows for less variation in reagent performance. * Specifications where ‘BAKER ANALYZED’® Sodium Sulfate exceeds Industry Standards.
