7th level C team students participated in a contest in their English class. The participants went to a
website called Inspire. Here they found information
about many things. Depending on their choice though,
students were to find information about either mongooses or snakes.
Once they had found their facts, they wrote one
paragraph about the animal they chose. The next paragraph they wrote was an overview of Inspire (the website they used.) They wrote about how they could use

A SAD-ROMANTIC POEM
JASON HEBBLETHWAITE
Although we have to be apart,
We’ll always be together
Close enough in mind and heart,
To manage any weather
Our love remains,
The cold and dark world beside,
A glass house on a mountain-top
Swaying, with us inside
Our love is a beacon
Downstream, but not too far
Glistening with light,
Shining to worlds afar
Though dark and arcane
The world may seem
We will remain
No crack in any beam
Our family will always be together
A shelter with many inside
Together, forever
We too, will stay inside
Though mountains fade
And continents drift downstream
I will always be here
Turn, will be here
On October 17th, author Saundra
Mitchell came to CMS. She is the
author of several books, including
The Vespertine, which was in our
Scholastic Book Fair last month.
Ms. Mitchell discussed what it is
like to write books, and the steps it
takes to edit, and re-edit to get a
work published. Born and raised in
Indiana, Ms. Mitchell described how
the publishers in New York could
not believe some of her Indiana settings, and characters, and how she
had to rewrite whole parts of her
books to make them more credible
to all readers. Supernatural books
are her favorite types of books to
read and write, and all have a certain
twist to them. Thanks for visiting
our school, Ms. Mitchell.

Twins
Olivia Jewett
• In 1980, 1 in 53 babies was a twin.
• In 2009, 1 in 30 babies was a twin.
This represents a 76% increase in the twin birth rate in the thirty years from 1980
- 2009. The study estimated that an additional 865,000 more twins were born during these thirty years than if the twin birth rate had not increased during those
decades. To put this in other terms:
• In 1980, the twin birth rate was 18.9/1,000.
• In 2009, the twin birth rate was 33.3/1,000.
In those terms, it is evident that the twin birth rate increased from less than 2 percent of babies born in 1980 to over 3 percent of babies born in 2009.
I think this change is very nice. I, being a twin, am very impressed at the
increase. I think the world should be very full of twins because I think twins are
cool. Plus I am very happy being a twin, so I want the rest of the world to be happy too.
How Does It Look To You?
Grace Jewett
A poll for the cafeteria lunch went out to a couple tip teachers in the 7th
grade for their students to do and we got the results back. They look like this:
Out of 50 students:
21 / 50 Likes how it tastes. 29 / 50 don’t like how it tastes.
12 / 50 Thinks it looks good. 38 / 50 don’t think it looks good.
13 / 50 Thinks it is as healthy as it can be.
36 / 50 don’t think the lunch is as healthy as it can be.
I wasn’t surprised at these results. What first came to my mind was, “Why
don’t they change it if the students don’t like it?” I mean, a taco rolled up and put
in a paper bag doesn’t exactly sound good. I asked some kids what was for lunch,
and one replied, “I don’t know, and I don’t want to know.” I was just trying not
to laugh after that! I mean, some people are forced to eat school lunch, and some
people don’t even care! I think that the school should at least think about revising
the lunch or make it healthier! The country’s obesity rate is up and higher then ever! Maybe we could make that rate go down if we made healthier eating habits
and not give out so much junk food.

Mean girls
Celeste Coughlin
Mean girls, we all know they exist we might even be the mean girls ourselves. Going
around bashing people and calling names. Great, teen girls hating on other teen girls as well as
dealing with raging hormones we have to worry about what you think about us? The ones who
are ALWAYS insecure and worrying whether they look okay or if they're fat. I know people
who have not eaten in a week to 'lose weight' because of being called fat. If this wasn't made
clear in your years of health class starving yourself of nutrients and a fuel source for your body
is not helping you 'lose weight' it's called anorexia. We have all sat through lectures about bullying or have to read an article about it yet we watch other girls calling someone fat or ugly
and way worse. It is a proven fact eight million people have eating disorders in America, 90%
are women. This is starting in the teens and even as early as early as age 8. Next time you see a
girl being mean to another girl think about it. Do you want this person to be one of those
90%? Or maybe the 18% of girls struggling with a disorder.
Why is it that you are content to just sit by and watch? I have done this I am not claiming to
be innocent. Then I looked in the girls’ eyes I saw all of the hurt and pain that it really causes
when you make snide and rude remarks. It hurts them worse than you could imagine. Take
Pheobe Prince for example after years of being tormented and harassed she felt as of she had no
one to turn to. Pheobe Prince killed herself on January 14, 2010. She was fifteen years old. No
one was there for her. This is your chance to prevent something like what happened to a small
town girl who was bullied. I know for a fact none of us want to be any of the people shown crying on the news over our lost student or that our principal wants to be the one delivering the
speech about what a great student this person was. So just think about it. Is that what you really
wanted? Don’t stand by while that girl gets picked on. One person who can make a difference
Love no maer what happens
and make a stand, you.
Love endlessly
Love passionately
Love forever and always

JASON HEBBLETHWAITE
Bloodline is a novel by Kate Cary. This is a
novel in the form of entries from diaries from various people. The entries include excerpts from Lieutenant John Shaw who is a communications officer
in World War 1, Lily Shaw John’s sister, Mary
Seward a nurse who cares for John, and Quincy
Harker John’s commanding officer who mysteriously prowls in the night raiding
German camps in night raids.
All of these are the main characters, who are all connected to John. John is
a 19 year old boy who was sent to France to fight in World War 1. It is here, in
which he met his mysterious and dark commanding officer, Quincy Harker who
has a dark secret.
This Quincy Harker was known for his night raids, in which after John
earns his respect by saving fellow officers from German fire, John is asked to
come on these raids with him. But John has a problem; he has been having terrible fevers, and has been hallucinating severely. John thinks he has been seeing a
large hound murdering Germans.
John reluctantly agreed to Harker’s request and is going on the night raid.

RECIPE

Jason Hebblethwaite
This past weekend I was very bored, and was eating
(as I always do when I’m bored), and I wanted to eat
something tasty. So I cooked up a scrumptious concoction that would make my own mouth water. So I
grabbed some apples and spices to see what I could
make, I came up with this recipe;
•
Four thin sliced red apples
• 2 tsp. cinnamon
• 2 pinches nutmeg
• 1 cup of bisquick
• 2/3 cup milk
• 3 tsp. butter
• 1 cup of sugar
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Put sliced up apples in square pan. Put 2 tsp.
butter on top of sliced apples, sprinkle a mix of 1 cup of sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon,
and 2 pinches of nutmeg evenly over apples in pan. Mix milk and bisquick together, and spread evenly over apples.
Bake for 30-45 minutes, or until light brown. Mix 1 tsp. cinnamon, and 1 tsp. of
butter together in bowel and spread over baked cinnamon apple mix( I have not
come up with a name, sorry).
I completed my goal of mouth-watering baked food. I think it is delicious, though
it does have 3 tsp. butter, and sugar. It is very sweet, and is to be eaten lightly,
plus, the butter may add unwanted calories.

Gobbling-Good Cupcakes
By
Reagan McCoy
Well these cupcakes are probably the cutest cupcakes ever. They
are perfect for a Thanksgiving dessert if you don’t like pie. Well
actually if you can eat Thanksgiving dinner, pie and these cupcakes without bursting, I am totally ok with that too.
Well anyway for these cupcakes you will need:
*24 frosted cupcakes
*24 Nutter Butter cookies
*2-3 tablespoons of white frosting or decorators gel
* Mini chocolate chips
* Fruit leather (you will need various colors and flavors)
* Toothpicks
How to Make Your Own Rock Candy
Jason Hebblethwaite
You will need:
• 1 Glass jar or drinking glass
• 1 Piece of cotton string
• 1 Pencil or stick
• 1 Paper clip
• 1 Food coloring (optional)
• 1 c Water
• 2 c Sugar
• Additional sugar
• Artificial flavoring (optional)
Tie a short piece of cotton string to the middle of the pencil or stick. Attach a paper clip to the
end of the string for a weight.
Moisten the string very lightly, and roll in a bit of sugar (this will "attract" the sugar crystals
from the syrup to the string). Place the pencil or stick over the top of the glass or jar with the
string hanging down inside.
Heat the water to boiling, and dissolve the 2 cups of sugar into it. For the biggest crystals
FAST, heat the sugar-water solution a SECOND time, and dissolve as much additional sugar as
you can into it. Add a few drops of food coloring to the solution if you want colored candy. Also, if you wish to flavor it, lightly apply wanted flavoring. A common mix of food coloring and
flavoring is; Green food coloring and mint extract. Pour the solution into the prepared glass or
jar and leave undisturbed for a couple of days. Depending on how much sugar you were able to
dissolve into the water, you should start to see crystals growing in a few hours to a few days. I
have tried this myself and I can gladly give it 9/10 stars.

Brownie Pizza
Reagan McCoy
Do you like brownies? Do you like pizza? Well what if you combine brownies and pizza together? What do
you think the outcome would be? Well now you can know! The dough is a brownie but formed in the shape of a
pizza.
For this recipe you will need:
. A chewy brownie batter
. 2 ½ cups of confectioners’ sugar
. ½ cup (1 stick) softened butter
. 2 ½ tbsp milk
. 1 tsp vanilla extract
. Red food coloring
. 6 oz white chocolate
. Assorted candies
Instructions:
Prepare your brownie mix as directed on the box with one exception. Instead of pouring the mixture into a rectangular or square pan, pour it into a lightly greased and clean 12-inch pizza pan.
Bake, in an oven preheated to 350 degrees, for 20 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick that has been inserted in
the middle comes out clean. (meaning no wet batter) Then let your brownie crust cool.
While your crust cools mix up the red frosting. The red frosting will act as your sauce. In a large bowl, cream
the confectioners’ sugar and butter.
Now add your milk and vanilla extract and beat until smooth. Add ½ to 1 teaspoon of red food coloring paste
and mix until you have desired shade. TIP: Think of tomato sauce. Use a spatula or knife to spread the
sauce evenly over your cooled pizza.
Now you are ready to add your toppings. THE BEST PART!!! For cheese you roughly grate or chop your white
chocolate. You may want your mom or dad to help you with this.
Sprinkle the cheese over the sauce. For other toppings, add M&M's, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips or any
other favorite candies.
Use a pizza cutter to slice the brownie into 16 pieces. Present it in a pizza box (ask a local pizza parlor if you
could have or buy one).
Now comes the best part. This part is better than adding your toppings. You can serve and eat. Have it for an
after-school snack, for dessert for a pizza party!
