1 2 3 Center for Teaching and learning NOV 2012, Issue 12.1 Lorem Ipsum Spotlight on ADvising! Advising as Teaching Think back to your own academic career. Was there a particular instructor or advisor who made a profound impact on your development (either positively or negatively)? What made that person stand out? We know that advising can be the most valuable teaching you do. Reaching out, particularly to those who are not doing well, to help them find the right path can make all the difference in the world. Getting to know your advisees will facilitate dialog that can help you to give students the perspective they need to make good choices. To facilitate this, Vice President Bryon Grigsby will cover up to $100.00 per advisor for you to take your advisees for a meal or for coffee. You can use the requisition form to get reimbursed or you can login to Blackboard and order catering through Sodexo (Community->Dining Services->Catering). Jeanne Hoffman in Academic Affairs (Wilkins Hall) will process the forms for you. We hope that with degree audits in place, the heavy lifting of academic advising has been done for you and that you will have more time to focus on each student and their individual goals and aspirations. NACADA (the National Academic Advising Association) has many useful resources for advisors For upcoming webinars on advising transfer students and international students, see: http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Webinar s/events.htm –A. Marchant ([email protected]) ITunes U Files to be deleted Please be aware that older files in iTunes U, starting with 2010 and before, will be removed beginning next week. Our available memory allotment was 500 gigabytes, and we have exceeded it. If you need any of these files and do not already have backups, please contact Val Gangwer at Media Services [email protected] / 540-6654637 for help. Also, if you have old files you know can be safely deleted, please let Val know. –V. Gangwer Preregistration for 2013/SP continues through November 20th. Sophomores (and above) can register November 6, Freshmen (and above) on November 9th, all visiting students (and above) on November 14th. New undergraduates may register on paper beginning November 14th as well. Please review degree audits with your students. –E. White, Interim Registrar New Course Evaluation System The university is transitioning to IOTA’s MyCourseEvaluation System. So far, testing on courses that ended early has gone well. For courses that end in December, the evaluation period will begin 12/3 and go through 12/11. Students will get an email and will login with their SUNet login and password. (The same credentials they use for Blackboard and WebAdvisor.) Faculty and administrators will get an email notifying them when reports are ready after grades are submitted. There will be a webinar 12/14 3-4 for faculty who wish to preview the system. Sign up on the Faculty Training Calendar or to request a recording of the webcast. From the Registrar: Final Course Grades Ø Final grades for 2012/FA are due 3 business days after the final exam. All grades must be submitted no later than 5 pm Wednesday, December 19. As of Friday, December 21st, grades not entered will be recorded as "F". This deadline is not flexible, as academic standing reports need to be run immediately thereafter. CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING Blackboard News: (Blackboard email: [email protected]; site: www.su.edu/bb) Ø Collaborate session links are now working properly in Firefox. IC News: (https://learn.su.edu->Tech Support) Ø Ø Ø Ø 1. RAM upgrades for the classroom systems should help improve performance. 2. OS X Lion coming to the classrooms starting in November. 3. Our Mac users can now add printers through Self Service. This service is now being tested and available to all faculty/staff who will no longer need to dig around in System Preferences to select the printer model and/or driver manually. Just find the printer in Self Service and click "Add Printer." Most printers are now available but we're still working on the ones that use accounting codes (mostly impacts staff). Look for the Printers section in the Categories list in Self Service. Have great student videos? Please upload short videos to upload.su.edu to show the great work our students are doing. IBooks Author Training Would you or your students be interested in learning more about authoring iBooks? If you are interested in attending an iBooks training session in early January, please send your name to Terri Masiello at [email protected]. We are keeping a list of those interested in hopes of providing a well-attended session. If you will be assigning an iBooks project in your class, consider registering your class for this training. Workshops The Center for Teaching and Learning continues to offer workshops with the support of our very talented faculty and staff. Sometimes there are no signups for workshops, forcing us to cancel at the last minute. This can be frustrating for the presenters. So please use the Faculty/Staff Training Calendar found in Blackboard to sign up for workshops you’d like to attend: https://sites.google.com/a/su.edu/train ing-calendars/. Also, it is our goal to schedule workshops that are diverse in content and meet the needs of the entire campus. If you have ideas for future workshops or would like to present a specific topic, please contact Terri Masiello at [email protected]. The Buzz on MOOCS Massively Open Online Courses Consortia of universities and entrepreneurs are experimenting with free/inexpensive online courses. How this will play out is unclear, but in the short term this means there is a lot of free, high quality content that you can use to augment your own courses or use for supplemental instruction. Examples: -Carnegie Mellon: http://oli.cmu.edu/courses/freeopen/ -Khan Academy: http://www.khanacademy.org/ -A network for faculty to share, collaborate, and teach: http://www.academicroom.com/ For more information: -Dave Comier, ”What is a MOOC” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e W3gMGqcZQc (4.27) -A. Ripley, “College is Dead. Long Live College!,” Time US, 10/18/12. -Other MOOCs: EdX, Duolingo (languages) Coursera, Udemy, and Udacity. In a future article, we will talk about the power of small scale collaborations. Stay tuned! -A.
