The Online Writing Reviser The Online Writing Reviser is a tool developed by SAS Curriculum Pathways and is accessible from the LHS Online Writing Center. Accessing the Online Writing Reviser 1. Go to the Liberty High School website: www.asd20.org/lhs. 2. Click Information>>Writing Center. 3. Select the Click here to go to the Writing Reviser link. The Writing Reviser program opens in a new window. 4. On the bottom right of the window, type your user name as student01, and leave the password blank. Click Log In. You have two options after you log in: create essay or load essay. If you already have your essay saved as an HTML document, select load essay to browse to the file and upload it to the Reviser. If you have not written your essay or if you have it in Microsoft Word or another program, choose create essay. You can copy and paste text from a Word document into the Reviser. © 2013 5. After you have an essay in the Reviser, type your Purpose for writing the essay (i.e., to convince/persuade, to narrate/entertain, or to inform/explain). 6. Type the Audience for your essay. Will it be read by peers, the teacher, posted online, etc.? Using the Reviser 1. When you’re finished with your essay draft, click the Submit button on the left pane of the window. 2. Use the toolbar on the top for sentence-level statistics and identification. Statistics: Count of sentences, average sentence length, etc. Chart: Bar graph representing the number of words per sentence in the essay. List: Vertically lists all sentences so that sentence length/variety can be compared. Numbers: Puts numbers in front of each sentence, keeping them in paragraph form. Preview: Shows a summary count of all of the statistics and revision areas. 3. Use the toolbar on the left to run the essay through the program to identify common errors and places in which the essay could use improvement, such as in sentence variety. As you work through toolbar options, make you changes directly on the draft in the window. © 2013 Essay Structure: Review and analyze the essay’s introduction, body, conclusion, and organization. Sentence Economy: Highlight in the essay some points of wordiness, prepositional phrases, passive voice, relative clauses, and repeated words. Sentence Variety: Highlight simple sentences, sentence fragments, and run-ons. Also highlight various sentence beginnings to aid in improving sentence fluency. Sentence Power: Highlight verbs to aid in improving sentence power. Sentence Clarity: Highlight other common areas of concern, including possible use of cliché, vague words, pronoun problems, modifier problems, and errors in parallel construction. Finishing 1. After going through the steps in the writing reviser, click Finish in the lower left corner of the screen. 2. Three options are available to complete your work: save your essay in HTML format, print it, or email it. © 2013
