HeartChase: Contagiously fun with a purpose For people who enjoy friendly competition, the American Heart Association’s HeartChase is the community event that provides a new, fun way to support a great cause. Think Amazing Race meets Minute to Win It – a community-wide competition to solve clues and complete activities that engage friends and families of all ages in a race to the finish line. HeartChase volunteers are connected in their community – they have a traditional and a digital network. They know their community – and others in their community know them. They thrive with friendly competition that is engaging and motivating. The ideal HeartChase Chair is passionate about building a healthier community, highly networked and experienced in leading volunteer groups to deliver memorable community events. The ultimate HeartChase includes great volunteer leadership, lots of event participants, a fantastic, memorable event, post-event participation in building healthier lives and raising significant funds to support the AHA. The Volunteer Leadership Committee will combine their creative imaginations and tools from the AHA to achieve the ultimate HeartChase. HeartChase participants are adventurers with heart. Participation requires smart problem- solving resulting in real solutions that can help build healthier lives. They enjoy friendly competition that is engaging and motivating. HeartChase participants like to achieve, no matter what prize is at stake. Participants pay an entry fee and, ideally, conduct personal fundraising as they join other adventurers in their communities on a quest to decipher clues and participate in activities at a series of checkpoints around town – all engaging, participatory activities. The program will involve social media platforms for individual fundraising at event challenges. Through post event communication and on-line activities, participants will be engaged in the AHA mission: Building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Sample HeartChase Checkpoints Checkpoint A Calorie Temptation – Teams must choose a snack – energy bars, cereal bars, candy bars – then burn the calories contained in their choice on treadmills nearby. Checkpoint B Everybody Let’s Zumba – Teams must learn and perform a videotaped Zumba exercise dance routine. Checkpoint C Text to Give – Recruit 10 friends to donate $10 each. Your friends can donate at any point in time, but that checkpoint (and your race) is not complete until they do, so teams better ask as many people as possible. Checkpoint D Field-day – Hula Hoop for a full minute, sack race, run a three-legged race. Checkpoint E Food Pyramid – Using cereal boxes with the AHA HeartCheck Mark, teams must construct a towering pyramid, minimum six feet high, that stands upright for a full 60 seconds.
