www.lincolnshirewaldorf.org.uk [email protected] Lincolnshire Waldorf Group Newsletter – January 2014 Winter has arrived! After so many months of mild weather Jack Frost is finally making his mark. Fingers crossed snow is just around the corner. Welcome We’d like to say a warm welcome Becky, Evie and Alfie who have recently joined the afternoon group. And welcome to Sophie and William who have been joining the morning sessions when families are unable to attend. We hope you’re enjoying your time at the group and are settling into the rhythm of the day. Do continue to let us know if you can’t attend a session, so we can offer a drop-in session to families on the waiting list. Thank you Huge thank you to all of you who attended our committee meeting last week. It was our best turn out to date. As a result we have decided to hold every other committee meeting between the sessions at Chambers to give more families the opportunity to attend. We’d also like to thank Sue and Jane for your continued support and Paul (Izaac’s daddy) for fixing many of our wooden toys recently. Library Please could all library books be returned by the end of term for audit. Thank you Committee meeting Fundraising Rags to riches! ASTCO pay us per kilo for old clothes, underwear, pajamas, shoes, belts and bags (NOT bedding or towels). It doesn’t matter what state it's in, it will be recycled - either worn again in Eastern Europe or made into industrial rags. So we challenge everyone to have a clear out. Co-op dividend card: If you are a Lincolnshire Co-Op member and have a dividend card, you can now help raise funds for our group, without losing any of your own dividend payments. Simply visit www.lincolnshire.coop/community champions and select the 'Choose my own Community Champion' option. If you follow the steps on-line and select 'Lincolnshire Waldorf Parent and Child Group' to receive your portion of the Community Champions' Fund, then every time you earn a dividend, the Co-Op will donate an equal amount to our group If you have any queries, please just contact our Treasurer, Steph ([email protected]) and she will help out. Snipe Dales Our all outdoor group at Snipe Dales, near Horncastle runs on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month. We meet at 10am in the car park and finish around 12.30 pm. The sessions rhythm mirrors that of the indoor groups with craft, walks, shared snack, songs and stories. Warm clothes essential but a beautiful woodland experience assured!! This group is in jeopardy of closure from September as many of our families have children moving on to school. We have produced a poster to advertise the group and would appreciate it if you could put a copy up in your local area. (See attachment) Wednesday 12th March 730pm Woodhall Spa Please see Ali or Jenny for more information on joining the committee. We aim to create an environment that is respectful of the needs of young children and their parents, drawing on Rudolph Steiner’s understanding of child development. Lincolnshire Waldorf Group Newsletter –January 2014 Lincolnshire Steiner School Courses and events www.thesteineracademylincolnshire.org The Steiner Academy Lincolnshire project re kindled this winter with a new steering group working hard to finish an application to the Department of Education (DFE) for May 2014 in the hope of opening a school in September 2015. The DFE free schools initiative has been a successful route for Steiner schools to open with state funding in the UK. So far there are four Steiner Academies providing a creative, engaging and environmentally conscious curriculum to children in the south of England, within an ethos that values childhood and encourages the individual to think creatively and independently . Our vision is to create an all through school from 4- 16 yrs. We will be part of a group of Steiner Academies, state funded schools that build on the ideas of Steiner education with a commitment to diversity and accessibility. Our website is now up and running and will be regularly updated with news and developments. You can find us at www.thesteineracademylincolnshire.org and Facebook page Lincolnshire Steiner Academy. There is a demand survey on the website for interested parents to fill in which will help our application enormously if we can show community support. We are also holding 2 meetings in February to meet parents and discuss news. We are also looking for extra members willing to commit to the journey and workload to join our steering group! We would especially like to hear from anyone with Steiner Waldorf teacher qualifications. If you would like to know more please contact Bee on 07401693669 or email; [email protected]. All that we need to do, be we low or high Is to see that we grow nearer the sky. Down is the earth, up is the sky, here are my friends and here am I. Trot, trot, trot! Go and never stop! Where it’s rough and where it’s stony, Trot along, my little pony, Trot, trot, trot, trot, trot! Go and never stop! Open shut them open shut them, Give a little clap. Open shut them open shut them, Lay them in your lap. Creep them creep them, Creep them creep them, Right up to your chin. Open up your little mouth but do not let them in. Shut them open shut them open, Up to shoulders fly. Flitter flutter like a sparrow flying in the sky. Falling falling slowly falling right down to the ground, Gently pick them up again and turn them round and round. Slowly turn them round and round and… Faster, faster, faster. Two little dickey birds sitting on a wall, One named Peter, one named Paul. Fly away Peter, fly away Paul, Come back Peter, come back Paul! The North wind doth blow and we shall have snow, And what will poor robin do then, poor thing? He'll sit in a barn and keep himself warm and hide his head under his wing, poor thing. Frosty weather, snowy weather, when the wind blows we huddle up together. King winter has come and the cold wind blows, His crown of ice and his cloak of snow. The trouble with this puddle is its difficult to see If it comes up to my ankle or it comes up to my knee. And if I were to jump in it the chances are I’ll get A wellie full of water and a sock that’s wet. When the wind blows, then the mill goes. When the wind drops then the mill stops. Clickety, clackety, clickety, clackety, Clickety, clackety, clickety, clack. The little winds they whisper, they whisper as they pass. They tell their tiny secrets to the flowers and the grass. The big wind goes a-buffeting, a-blustering about. The little winds whisper and the bid winds SHOUT. Blow north wind blow, all the leaves have fallen. Cold frost and snow winter comes a calling. Mother Nature’s sleeping now all the trees are bare. Underneath the ground she hides her treasures rare. Golden slumbers kiss your eyes Smiles awake you when you rise Hush little darling do not cry And I will sing a lullaby Goodbye now, goodbye now, it’s time for us to go. Goodbye now, goodbye now, we’ll see you all next time. Goodbye. Rhythm of the sessions We recognise that having a predictable, reliable structure or rhythm to each session helps children to relax and feel secure, knowing what will happen next. Morning session: 10am Arrive – take off coats and boots. You’re welcome to bring slippers. Play – children have a period of free play; parents may participate in an adults’ craft activity at the table. 11am Tidy up together Circle time – songs and rhymes, followed by washing hands. Shared meal – we light a candle and sing a blessing song. We share a nourishing snack of fruit, bread and occasionally home-made cake (bring something along for this). Clear up – together we clear the table and sweep the floor, then put on coats and boots. 1150am Outdoor play sometimes in the butterfly garden, and walk in the woodland. 1220pm Story time and goodbye song. Afternoon session: 130pm Arrive –take snack items to the centre (see below). Outdoor play sometimes in the butterfly garden, and walk in the woodland. 2pm Circle time – songs and rhymes, either in magic circle in the woodland or in the extension in heavy rain. Come inside - take off coats and boots. You’re welcome to bring slippers, followed by washing hands. Shared meal – we light a candle and sing a blessing song. We share a nourishing snack of fruit, bread and occasionally home-made cake. cake (bring something along for this). Clear up – together we clear the table and sweep the floor. 240pm Play – children have a period of free play; parents may participate in an adults’ craft activity at the table. 340pm Tidy up together 350pm Story time and goodbye song. Children learn through repetition, so the same story and songs are used for 6-8 weeks, allowing children (and parents) to become familiar with them. We also observe the cycle of the seasons and celebrate festivals, and this is reflected in our choice of songs, craft activity, story and objects on the nature table, as well as our experience of the woodland and garden. We recognise that authentic, free play – without adult direction or interference – is essential for a child’s healthy development at every level. We offer simple, natural objects and toys. Parents are invited to participate in a seasonal craft activity at the table, where parents can get to know one another and quietly observe their children at play. Prior to age three, much of young children’s play is imitative. We ask adults to behave in a manner that is worthy of imitation. You can support your child’s learning (as well as the smooth running of the group) by, for instance, helping clear up after the meal, or putting away toys at tidy time – we find that children join in without being instructed or cajoled. Similarly, when adults are quiet and listen attentively at story time, children see what is expected and are inclined to follow suit. Joining in the songs we sing between activities, the ‘transition’ songs, will really help children know what is coming next too. Continue newsletter text here. Continue newslette here.
