Students will focus on the concepts of human condition/nature, conflict and culture. The average day will begin with quick writes and a homework check, followed by discussion of the homework, group literature activities and time to begin homework. Reading quizzes will be unannounced; therefore, students should come to class prepared. Each unit will be completed with a unit test that will be comprised of multiple choice, true/false, matching and/or written response questions. Students will write many peer revised, formal papers and deliver many formal speeches. Course Objective: Students in this course will: o Read world literature from the Anglo-Saxton, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Restoration, Eighteenth Century, Romantic and Victorian periods. o Relate literary selections to self and the real world through human condition and human nature. o Present written and oral literary analyses. o Participate meaningfully in discussions of selected works. Arrive to class on time. 2. Be respectful to the instructor and classmates. 3. Listen when others are speaking. 4. Come prepared to participate in class. 5. Use class time effective. Pack up and socialize only the last couple minutes of class. 6. Stay at a desk until the bell, no piling up at the door. 7. Carefully track grade and attendance and speak with the instructor if a concern arises. 8. Look up the definition of unknown words. Bathroom Pass Procedures: 1. Sign out 2. Take pass 3. Go to the nearest bathroom 4. Do not stop to chat or take a detour 5. Sign in 6. Only use the pass once per day 7. Leave the pen on the chalk ledge for signing in and out. Failure to follow the procedure will result in a loss of the bathroom pass. Mr. Haag’s Electronic Procedure: Electronics cannot be accessed during quizzes, tests, lectures, discussions or free reading. Electronics must access data through the school’s Wi-Fi. No: Social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) No music No calling No texting No games Yes: Defining words, researching relevant topics, reading textbooks or novels, accessing Schoology.com, Google docs or grades … If you are unsure about using technology, ask first. Plagiarism/Cheating: Plagiarism and cheating in any form will not be tolerated. You may not copy from the Internet, from other students, or from any other source. You must do your own work. Per English department procedure, if you choose to plagiarize or cheat, you will not receive credit for the assignment, your parents will be notified, and a behavior referral will be sent to your counselor. You will also be required to complete the assignment if it is a standard for course credit. Policies: This class will adhere to all school policies as covered in the student handbook. Please review the handbook policies regarding attendance pp. 10-11, behavior p. 19 and hats/dress code p. 21. Late Work: If an assignment is turned in late, it will be worth half credit. No assessments (quizzes, tests, essays, presentations, etc.) can be made up during the last week of the semester. No late homework will be accepted after a unit test for the late work has passed. The grades with assignments will be available online. It is the student's responsibility to stay on top of his/her grade and attendance. The student is in charge of making plans with the instructor for making up tests, quizzes, and receiving extra help during advisory and before or after school. Retakes: Tests and quizzes may not be retaken.
