Pentanes Haltermann Carless – a member of HCS Group Formed by H.I.G. Capital, the HCS Group began its activities with the acquisition of Haltermann Products from Dow Chemical in July 2011. In April 2013, HCS Group combined two established specialty hydrocarbons producing companies: Haltermann GmbH, Germany, and Petrochem Carless Holdings Limited (PCL), UK. The new group represents a market leading manufacturer of hydrocarbons driven by a strategy, which values strong customer relationships and outstanding quality. Since Johann Haltermann founded Haltermann in Hamburg in 1898, the company has developed into a leading manufacturer of a wide variety of hydrocarbon products. He instilled a constant drive within the company to continually develop technologies and products to meet further market requirements. Haltermann now operates world class facilities for distillation, raffination and extraction. Since then, Haltermann has been committed to improving technical performance, increasing commercial competitiveness and minimising the environmental impact of its products. Sustainability and Ecology Sustainability goes beyond investment in environmentally safe and emission-free production processes. It also includes our participation in Responsible Care (the ISO 14001 environmental audit) and other measures, such as waste reduction, safety at work and being a good neighbour. This promotes the efficient use of energy and constant improvement of processes to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment. We are committed to ethical, resource optimised operations and development in all our business activities. Sustainability in all its facets, especially the economics, ecology and social engagement, is an anchor to the HCS Group strategy. Quality performance is a commitment to excellence by each employee. HCS Group is dedicated to being the leader in providing quality products and services that meet or exceed the expectations of our customers. With benefits in the form of negligible ozone depletion potential (ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP) under atmospheric conditions, the industry has implemented Pentanes within blown foam applications as a key material. Pentanes have a short chemical lifecycle of days. By comparison, the lifecycle of halogenated saturated hydrocarbons, methane or CO2 ranges from several months to several years. Consequently and in line with the Montreal protocol, such halogenated products have either already been banned or will be phased out. Specialty Hydrocarbon Solvents are a strategic business within Haltermann Carless, providing a strong commitment to the market. Haltermann Carless produces Pentanes at the refinery in Speyer, located in the centre of the European chemical and refining industry. It provides a flexible logistics network, which is easy to access by river, rail and road transportation. Haltermann Carless’ Pentanes offer a broad portfolio of products, depending upon specific industrial requirements, which includes all three isomers (n-, Iso- and Cyclopentane) as well as their corresponding blends. In line with its future growth strategy, HCS Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Beta Grupo Petroquimico, Mexico in June 2013. The new production location in Central America enables HCS Group to become an exclusive partner for hydrocarbon products, such as Isoand n-Pentane in NA/LA markets. The HCS Group has long-established markets and sales networks in more than 90 countries, with sales offices in Europe and North America. Headquarter Sales Offices Production Houston Gunness Leatherhead Frankfurt Coatzacoalcos Harwich Antwerp Hamburg Speyer Products and Industries Haltermann Carless provides Pentanes around the globe from its production facilities in Speyer, Germany and Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Outstanding production capabilities and technical excellence enable Haltermann Carless to tailor our products according customers’ expectations. Polyurethane Foam Systems Pentanes are used as blowing agent in the production of polyurethane foams. The foam is applied to insulation in household and commercial appliances, reefers and cooling containers, in the construction area as boards and panels, in pipes and similar applications. A blowing agent properly formulated for a specific application is a key requirement for our customers to maximize the thermal and physical product characteristics. Pentane blown foams are complex in their composition. Each one has to meet stringent environmental and safety requirements, whilst providing high insulation performance at stable processing conditions. Catalytic Processes The chemical industry uses Pentanes as specific hydrocarbon solvents in various catalytic processes. Low levels of impurities and consistent quality are key requirements in ensuring a sustainable and stable operating process. For many years, Haltermann Carless has proven itself as a reliable partner in providing these products to key industries. Cosmetic Products Haltermann Carless’ special cosmetic Pentane grades deliver high standards of purity and low odour when used as propellants in consumer cosmetic products, such as hairspray and shaving Production Method / Unit n-Pentane 95 Further, they are expected to support dimensional stability. To meet these customer and market requirements, a Pentane grade appropriate to the particular polyurethane system is required for each individual application. Haltermann Carless’ Pentanes portfolio is designed to meet today’s and tomorrow’s market and customer needs for hydrocarbon blowing agents. Products of all three pentane isomers range from pure technical qualities of min. 95 % to specific tailored blend rations to optimize performance. Material may also be supplied packed in drums of 200 Litres, 60 Litres and 20 Litres. 100 Litre pressurised cylinders for testing purposes are available on request. Handling The hazard classification of Pentanes range from highly to extremely flammable, which requires specific fire as well as explosion precautions. Engineering companies experienced in the design and construction of storage facilities are essential to guarantee safe and proper handling. Local regulations for handling and storage of flammable hydrocarbon liquids vary from site to site and it is recommended to consult a local Health & Safety officer during the planning stage. Therefore, Haltermann Carless is limited in terms of offering specific recommendations, and refer all customers to the most appropriate publications 1–3. • Discharging has to be supervised by a qualified member of staff and monitored in accordance with the company’s discharge procedure. Access to the discharge position should be limited to authorised personnel only, and a minimum clearance radius of 4 metres should be maintained around the vehicle throughout the discharge procedure. All site traffic near the area should be suspended during discharge. The discharge position must be protected by a comprehensive deluge system which needs to be earthed by an earthing-strap connected to the discharge gantry. For best practice, the earthing position should be fitted with an alarm system. •The product should be stored in a pressurized tank equipped with a vapor return system, which can be connected to the tanker and ensures that evaporation / emissions are minimized. • To avoid spillage, samples should be taken from the bottom valve using a reducer trap controlled by a ball valve for each compartment of the vehicle. • Delivery notes should be signed by the discharge supervisor and security office staff. 1) Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquified Petroleum Gases Regulation 1972, ISBN 0 11 020917 6: Available from HMSO – Tel. 0870 6005522 2) The Storage of Flammable Liquids in Fixed Tanks of up to 10,000 m3 Total Capacity, (HSG 176), ISBN 0 71 761470 0: 3) Code of Practice for the Selection, Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Apparatus for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres – General Requirements BS 5345 – Part I, 1989: Available from the British Standards Institute – Tel. 020 8996 9000 Notice: The information and data contained herein do not constitute sales specifications.
