Supporters Disruptive Trends Changing the face of urban development Session One: 8am - 9.30am Disruptive Technologies and the Urban Development Industry "Capital isn't so important in business. Experience isn't so important. You can get both these things. What is important is ideas. If you have ideas, you have the main asset you need, and there isn't any limit to what you can do with your business and your life." Harvey Firestone, founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Many development companies say they want to be cutting edge, but what does this mean? This panel session unpacks how developers adapt to change and some of the key innovations that are likely to impact on the industry going forward. To inform the discussion we have three short presentations from our expert panellists: • Mr Derek Barlow | Investment Manager/Co-Founder | CrowdfundUP • Mr Sam Phan | Managing Director | T&G Corporation • Mr Tom McHugh | Manager of Road Network Operations | Main Roads WA • Mr Craig Graham | Senior Development Manager WA | Peet Limited The presentations cover many changes that are heading our way, we have chosen three that we think have the potential to influence the industry: Transport Innovation: The Wall Street Journal quoted Barclays as forecasting a 40% reduction in new car sales as autonomous vehicles burst onto the international market in the early 2020’s and Main Roads is looking towards the future with their current investment decisions as this revolution will fundamentally change traffic engineering and transport modelling. What does this mean for your development when road capacity and transport efficiency could end congestion whilst making journeys productive time? Funding Innovation: With crowd funding platforms revolutionising the way that financing occurs in sectors such as technology and restaurants, CrowdfundUP is assisting developers and investors connect through innovative funding options. What opportunities will this new approach bring? 3D Printing: The mining industry is already embracing this technology but what are the opportunities for the development industry? Sam will take us through the current applications and how it is revolutionising the market. This is going to be a fascinating session and will help to you to understand the scale of the change that we are facing over the next decade as the many potential disruptive technologies take hold. Supporters Disruptive Trends Changing the face of urban development Session Two: 9.30am - 10.30am Case Study: Battery Storage of Residential Rooftop Solar, Alkimos Beach Ms Nadja Kampfhenkel | Sustainability Manager WA | Lend Lease Mr Jon D’Sylva | General Manager Commercial | Synergy The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) recently announced funding for a trial combining rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) with battery storage at Alkimos Beach. The trial, which will involve combining 1.1MWh of centralised lithium ion battery storage with more than 100 rooftop PV systems, is being delivered through the combined efforts of Synergy, Lend Lease and Landcorp. The valuable technical and commercial insights gained from this project could help overcome regulatory barriers and prove the case for adding renewables into the residential planning process. Morning Tea: 10.30am - 11am Session Three: 11am - 12.30pm Getting Rid of the Barriers “Many people who try to do big bold things in the world find out it's not about the money or the technology: It's about the regulatory hurdles that will try and stop you.” Peter Diamandis, co-author of the New York Times bestseller, Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think. Reform Opportunities – Rethinking Tenure Mr Nick Allingame | Director Development Management | Pindan Ms Alison Fleming | Strata Title Act Reform Project Lead Lawyer | Landgate Mr Jeff Thierfelder | Principal | Edgefield Projects Mr John Wood | Founder & Managing Director | National Lifestyle Villages For many projects in Western Australia the creation of shared infrastructure is limited by complex legal arrangements that are difficult to maintain and sometimes challenging to enforce. The reform of the Strata Titles Act will make available the opportunities that have been available in the rest of Australia through the Community Tiles. In this session you will hear the latest on the Strata Titles Reform and gain insight through a case study analysis of the opportunities that are likely to become available. This reform is a game changer for the industry as it will drive choice in infrastructure providers and change the emphasis from meeting the requirements of the agency receiving the asset to embracing innovation to maximise the outcomes for the community.
