2013 Annual Report - Nativity Preparatory Academy

Nativity Preparatory Academy
Annual Report
Including summary of gifts
For July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013
“Breaking the cycle
of poverty through
education, one student
at a time.”
Nativity Preparatory Academy
is a Roman Catholic middle
school designed for motivated,
economically disadvantaged
students whose potential for
academic success has been
compromised by negative social and
economic factors affecting them and
their families.
Our graduates will leave Nativity well
equipped to handle a demanding
college preparatory high school
curriculum coupled with a strong
sense of spirituality, morality and
personal responsibility.
Nativity serves inner city Rochester
students in Grades 5-8, most who
come from families living below the
poverty line. Nativity was founded
in 2009, and is jointly co-sponsored
by McQuaid Jesuit and the Sisters of
St. Joseph of Rochester, who have
both provided leadership and seed
funding to the project.

The Nativity Student Pledge
(recited daily by students at morning assembly)
I am a member of Nativity Preparatory Academy. I am called to
become all that God has created me to be. I know that if I believe that
I can achieve I will achieve. As a member of Nativity Prep I will strive to
practice the five virtues:
RESPECT
I understand that respect is the cornerstone of all positive relationships.
I will demonstrate this virtue by treating others with dignity and
compassion, by using my gifts and talents for good, and by being
sensitive to the needs of those around me.
REPONSIBILITY
I understand that I have a responsibility to God, my family and my
community. I demonstrate this virtue by holding myself accountable
for my actions, by being thankful for the gifts I have been given, and
by taking care of the people and places around me through both
action and word.
GRATITUDE
I understand that I have been given much. I demonstrate the virtue of
gratitude by being thankful to God for the many gifts of creation that
surround me and for the many people who care about me and nurture
me. I will show my gratitude in my words and my actions and by being a
good steward of what has been given to me.
SPIRITUALITY
I understand that I am always in the holy presence of God. I demonstrate
this virtue by offering my struggles and my successes to Him. Through a
constant reflection on my life, I come to know myself and God more fully
and to understand His role for me in the world.
SCHOLARSHIP
I understand that scholarship is the pursuit of knowledge through study
and reflection. I demonstrate this virtue by treating all of my experiences
as an opportunity for growth. I am committed to making myself a more
thoughtful, intellectual person.
As a Nativity student I know these are the virtues I will need to practice to
become the person God has created me to be.
SCHOLARSHIP
Where the Class of 2013
is Going
Nativity Graduation, June 19, 2013
The second class of Nativity graduates
processed down the aisle in caps and gowns to
the delight and tears of their families, friends
and teachers. The tears came from those who
knew just how far these students had come
in just a few short years. They all came from
families that suffer the disadvantages of poverty
and all were several years behind when they
first enrolled in the school. Like so many of
their peers, their destiny was likely already
written if they had not found Nativity. These
young students grew immeasurably during their
years at Nativity, both in academic readiness, but more importantly, in maturity and life
skills that will be the foundation for their future. At graduation, each expressed their
thoughts on what Nativity meant to them and their future, and their words best sum up
how Nativity is making a difference.
IN THE WORDS OF OUR GRADUATES
Mariah Glasgow
Our Lady of Mercy
Rabin Dahal &
Gordon Nelson
McQuaid Jesuit
“I’d like to offer some advice to the younger Nativity students. I want you
to know that it will be hard, but never put your head down. Keep pushing
and motivating yourself to be the best you can be. There will be people
to help you.”
Eric Porter- attending Leadership Academy for Young Men
“Nativity has given me the opportunity to receive an excellent education.
If I did not have this opportunity, I do not know where I would have been.
Since I have been attending Nativity, I have learned many things. I have
learned how to take responsibility for my actions and how to be a leader.
I have also learned how to be a role model to new students. Nativity has
taught me that if I work hard enough, I can accomplish anything in life.
One of my favorite poets, Langston Hughes, wrote, “Hold fast to your
dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.” So,
hold on to your dreams, never let them go. If someone tells you that you
will not make it, don’t be discouraged. I’m here to let you know that your
dreams can become reality!”
Mariah Glasgow - attending Our Lady of Mercy
“My years at Nativity have taught me that it is important to stay focused
and do not let anything or anyone take away the focus you need to
achieve. I honestly have to say that I’m going to miss being pushed by
my teachers to study and get my homework done. I think that the most
important thing that I have learned is to appreciate everyone who has
tried to help me get my grades up so I could stand here tonight as a
Nativity graduate. To the younger students, my advice is to get your work
done and always study. Your teachers want to help you succeed. So, the
next time your teachers say study or check your work, just do it!”

RESPECT
Academic Day and Enrichment Program
One of the important aspects of a Nativity education is the extensive
individual learning process that it provides each student. The typical day at
Nativity Preparatory Academy runs from 7:30 a.m. until 5:45 p.m. and includes
academic classes, mandatory study hall sessions, and afternoon athletic and
fine arts activities. Recognizing the importance of nutrition, each student is
provided with breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. Students are required
to complete their homework at school under the guidance of tutors. This
allows the students who need it, to receive one-on-one assistance, with the
goal of eventually being able to work independently.
Beyond academics, one of the important aspects of a Nativity education is building
character and exposing students to new broadening experiences through our
enrichment program. This year we placed greater emphasis on Fine Arts with the
creation of the Nativity Choir, who performed at school and outside venues; a Creative
Writing Club; offered piano lessons, step dancing and staged the school’s first “Variety
Show.” Visiting art teachers helped engage
the students in creative expression and two of
our students won 1st place in the South Wedge
Community Sidewalk Art Contest. Chess club,
sewing and knitting lessons and tending to
our on-site garden were juxtaposed with CYO
sports, cross country, Lego Robotics competitions and swimming lessons at
the YMCA.
Other broadening experiences included visits to the Susan B. Anthony House,
Mount Hope Cemetery, the Museum & Science Center, the Memorial Art
Gallery, Genesee Country Museum, the Mary Jemison boat tour of the Erie Canal as well as visits to area colleges.
Our service program continues to reinforce the importance of giving back to the
community. Visiting the elderly at St. John’s Home, walking the neighborhood picking
up litter on Earth Day and working at a soup kitchen are a few examples of ways our
students live the virtues of responsibility and gratitude.
Our longer school days and Saturday sessions allow the time for these enrichment
activities and our dedicated staff, with the help of over 70 volunteers provides the
added manpower needed to allow the program to flourish. In total, Nativity students
receive over 550 additional hours of academic and enrichment programming than their
counterparts in Rochester City schools.

The ultimate impact of this intense educational program is the accelerated
academic progress seen by our students, most of whom entered Nativity
two to three years behind grade level. By graduation most are preforming at
grade level and are prepared for the high school curriculum that they will be
facing. Importantly, their academic gains accelerate year-on-year indicating the
importance of the continuity of academic support and individual tutoring.

The third week provides a
week long overnight camp
experience at Camp Asbury
on Silver Lake. Students are
supervised by Nativity staff
in coordination with the
Camp Asbury counselors, who oversee the outdoor
activities. This experience has provided our urban
students with a unique opportunity to spend time
in the country and experience the activities of an
overnight camp: swimming, archery, water sports,
spending nights “stargazing”, building a bonfire and
spending time enjoying the outdoors
(electronic devices and television are
not allowed at camp). Students build
responsibility, leadership and teamwork
skills. They are required to make beds;
keep their room neat and organized
and teams assist in setting the table for
meals, helping to prepare the meals
and washing dishes and clean up.

Graduate Support
This year we celebrated the graduation of
our second class of students, all of whom
were again accepted to the high school of
their choice. They follow last year’s graduates
who were our “pioneers”. The effort on
behalf of this group by Loretta Yatteau,
our Graduate Support Director, deserves
special recognition. Her advocacy with the
various high schools has enabled our students to make the transition to
the demands of their new environment. She meets regularly with guidance
counselors, teachers and principals at the high schools, as well as the
students, to ensure that any concerns or needs are addressed quickly. We
continue to provide tutoring support and have created a special Graduate
Support Room at the school for our graduates to use when they come to
study or just get together after school. Most are doing wonderfully, and
several have really blossomed. And for the few that are struggling, they know
that we will not give up on them. We are so proud of these young men and
women who come back and visit the school regularly and are acting like big
brothers and sisters or mentors to our younger students.

Photofinish 5k Event
Nativity students again participated in the Photofinish 5k
race sponsored by the George Eastman House in support
of the school. They LOVED it! This was a great experience
for them. They were in awe of the crowds cheering them on,
the mass of people running with them, and all the free drinks
and food at the end. They were also very proud of finishing
the 3.1 miles (a few were afraid they wouldn’t make it) and of
earning over $4,000 for their school. Our thanks to all of you
who provided donations to sponsor our students.

Nativity in Bloom
Nativity held its second annual fundraiser, “Nativity in Bloom 2013” at the
school on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Over 200 supporters attended the event
and had the opportunity to meet with the students, tour the school and be
entertained by the newly formed Nativity Choir. Guests enjoyed cocktails and
hors d’oeuvres while bidding on spring-themed items in the silent auction
donated by local businesses and individuals, and by donating funds for items
needed by the school by adding buds to a “Wishing Tree.” The highlight of
the evening was presentations by several of our Nativity graduates who spoke
of their time at Nativity and the impact it had on their lives. Over $75,000 was
raised. We thank all those who so generously contributed their time, talent
and treasure to the event.

Gifts in Memory of
William (Billy) D’Antonio
Remembering
“Mr. D”
(Billy D’Antonio)
Billy D’Antonio spent only a year as an Americorp
intern teacher at Nativity but the impact he left on
the lives of our students continues to live on. “Mr.
D”, as they called him, was far more than a teacher
to them, but also a mentor, coach and friend. He is
remembered as selfless, genuine, caring and funny,
and all at the school benefited from his presence.
And above all else, Billy will always be remembered
as a man who did things the right way, a man who
took care of his family, friends, and students at
an unprecedented level. Billy “walked the walk”
each and every day of his life- as a true “Man for
Others.” He is greatly missed.

Faculty and Staff 2013-2014
Nativity is blessed to have a talented, committed and compassionate staff to guide
the development of our students. Their dedication to the mission is extraordinary
and long days and unique challenges require them to alternate between the role
of educator, mentor, disciplinarian, role model, director and friend. A wonderful
combination of experienced master teachers, seasoned administrators, recent
college graduates and members of the Sisters of St. Joseph community share their
gifts with the students and each other. This creates a strong sense of camaraderie,
energy, hope and community which is passed on to the students. Their work ethic
and the sharing of unique talents and passions outside of the classroom provide
our students with new experiences and builds character. People create the culture
and the success of our students is due to their shared efforts.

Dear Friends:
As I look back on the past year, it has been truly
wonderful to watch the continued transition of
Nativity from a new school trying to gain traction
to a wonderful institution of learning where all
those engaged in the mission are unified in creating
a shared culture that can truly transform the lives
of our students. As an institution of learning, we
too need to continue to learn from experience. So,
we made advances in our curriculum, schedule and
staffing to ensure the unique needs of our students were being fully addressed. We added academic
intervention resources, expanded homework time, and created small group sessions for those who
were falling behind. Importantly, we created the new position of Graduate Support Director to
oversee the progress of our graduates in high school, and added a dedicated 5th grade teacher
to ensure our incoming students receive the foundational academic support they need. Beyond
academics, a refined enrichment program provides rotating six week sessions across a wide array
of fine arts, athletics and other enrichment activities. Students are required to participate in
all sessions ensuring that they “experience” new activities ranging from art, to step dancing, to
swimming lessons, to sewing, to chess club and robotics. Despite some grumbling, students not
only learned new skills but often developed new passions.
As Nativity grows and matures as an organization, our students will reap even greater benefits
in their academic grounding, life skills and faith foundation. It is our wonderful and dedicated
staff that gives these young boys and girls a chance to succeed in ways no one ever thought possible.
And it is you who we have to thank for providing your time, your talents and the financial
support necessary to make Nativity possible.
God Bless,
