DO NOW
Identify the type of bond found in each of the following substances:
H2
Lewis Structures for Ionic Compounds
Aim: To show the formation of ions after the electron transfer.
KCl
Na
HF

Ionic Compounds
Ionic bonds will have a difference in electronegativity of 1.7 or greater. The greater the difference in E.N., the stronger the ionic bond.
Which bond is more ionic? NaCl or KCl?

Ionic Compound Properties
Physical properties:
Crystal lattice structure
Brittle solids
High melting point and high boiling point.
Dissociates in water (ions break apart when dissolving)
NaCl (aq) > Na+ (aq) + Cl (aq)

Conduction: Poor conductors as solids because the ions cannot move, but great conductors when dissociated in water or when molten because the ions are mobile.

Lewis Dot Diagram
Barium Chloride
1. Draw the electron dot diagram for each individual
atom, then show the transfer of electrons from the
metal to nonmetal.
• In an ionic bond the metal transfers an electron to the nonmetal.
• Each ion formed now has a stable octet and the opposite charges attract to each other to create the bond.
Dec 15:12 PM
2. a) During the electron transfer, all of the metals
valence electrons must be lost to have a stable
octet.
b)The nonmetal must gain enough valence electrons
to have a stable octet.
c) Make sure you have enough of each metal and
nonmetal so the charges balance!!
3. Draw charges and brackets on each ion formed.
