Geology Minor
What majors does this
minor complement?
How many hours and what courses
does this minor require?
For career development in the sciences, a geology minor
complements biology, chemistry, environmental science,
computer science, and natural resources management.
The minor requires 21 hours, including: Geol 150, 250,
one other freshman-level geology course, and 10-11
hours of geology electives above the freshman level.
For career development in the professional programs,
a geology minor complements environmental health,
construction management, and parks and recreation.
GEOL 150 - Methods in Geology: earth materials
processes explored through field, analytical, and
computing methods, developing investigation
and communication skills.
For a career in social sciences, a geology minor complements
political science and anthropology.
GEOL 250 - Introduction to the Rock Forming Minerals:
Descriptive mineralogy emphasizing hand specimen
identification of common rock forming minerals,
occurrences, crystallization, and classification;
includes field trips, analytical labs, and microscope use.
What are the students
in the program doing?
Most geology minors have participated in major field trip courses.
Through the geology faculty, geology students participate in local,
national and international research projects. Over the past five
years, students have
• monitored the results of stream restoration projects
on campus and in Haywood county
•
documented historical changes in environmentally
important wetlands in NC, Nevada, and Washington
state in collaboration with the US Environmental
Protection Agency, US Forest Service, and the
National Park Service.
• studied the impact of hurricanes on SE US and
Caribbean coasts
• studied the tectonic history of the Appalachian mountains
in NC, a collaborative effort with the NC geological survey
• made geological maps of an area in central Australia and
completed laboratory analyses, which are both designed
to better understand tectonic plate boundaries
