METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PIKE TOWNSHIP Regular Meeting October 8, 2015 The Board of Education of the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township met in a regular session on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Administrative Services Center. Present at the meeting were: Mr. Metzler, Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. Randolph, Mr. Abrams, Mr. Downs, Mr. Huffine, Mrs. Poore, members; and Superintendent Jones. President Metzler requested to combine the action items on the agenda as a consent agenda. Ms. Sherry Shelton, Director of Information Services, displayed the new district website on the Boardroom monitors. Questions were answered and comments made. Ms. Sarah Dorsey, Communications Officer presented a district update to the Board. She stated, “As we speak, Anti-Bullying Expert, Travis Brown (A.K.A. Mr. Mojo) is sharing his expertise with parents and students at Pike High School.” In addition, she informed the Board that Pike High School hosted their fitness boot camp to help raise funds to fight cancer. Also, tomorrow representatives from the NCAA, IUPUI and University of Indianapolis (U of I) will host a pep session for our third graders encouraging them to be readers and strive for academic success. The NCAA and U of I will provide the third graders with backpacks full of school supplies and each student will receive a free book for their home libraries. Ms. Dorsey informed the Board that some of our Youth CareerConnect (YCC) students were invited to attend Rolls-Royce100 year celebration and the students did an excellent job representing the district. The Pike women’s soccer team advanced to the sectional semi-finals. In addition, our Pike High School Boys Cross Country Team is in the county championship; they will compete at Ben Davis this Saturday at 10 am. Also, this Saturday, our Pike Township Educational Foundation will host their annual Race for Education and on October 28th we will have Safe Trick or Treat at the Pike Freshman Center from 5 to 7 pm, sponsored by their Business Professionals of America. President Metzler reminded the Board of their role in the Safe Trick or Treat at Pike Freshman Center. Mary Chalmers, Mayor’s Neighborhood liaison for Pike attended the Board meeting and shared some community information. She stated, “Leaf season (pick up) starts November 9th – December 4th. Also, Neighbor Power is October 17th from 8:30 to 5:30 pm; this is a great opportunity to hear stories about neighbors doing amazing things to revitalize their neighborhoods.” (www.neighborpowerindy.org) Mrs. Patricia Burton, Director of Student and Community Services, asked Mr. Roy Dobbs to the podium. Mr. Dobbs presented a video to the Board in an effort to give a visual account of the outstanding work ethic and commitment displayed by representatives of the Young Men of Purpose program. The following individuals were recognized: Laurie Bradby Diyawnne Farris Cherì Harvey Lorie Pettiford President Metzler noticed in the audience, Mrs. Alicia Ramsey, a former Board member. Mrs. Ramsey complimented Superintendent Jones and the Board of Education on the appearance of the Administration building. President Metzler reminded the Board that they will vote on the balance of the meeting as a consent agenda, all topics will be presented as one topic. In addition he stated, “If there is anything that we need to pull out on a separate basis, we can do that as an individual item prior to voting on the consent agenda or we can just have discussion on any one item as part of the consent agenda.” President Metzler asked for a motion to present the meeting as a consent agenda. Mr. Huffine moved: To accept President Metzler’s motion to present the meeting as a consent agenda. Mrs. Richardson seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Donation Monetary Donation – Pyramid Point Post-Acute Rehabilitation Center Mr. Huffine seconded the motion. Mrs. Poore asked how many students are involved in the PATINS. Mrs. Megan Ahlers, Director of Exceptional Learners did not attend the Board meeting and the Administrators attending the meeting were unsure. Therefore, Mrs. Poore stated that she would ask Mrs. Megan Ahlers. The Board voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda. 2 Board Member Items Mr. Downs complimented Mr. Rivas and the security team on their efforts in directing traffic at the high school during one of the events. Mr. Metzler informed the Board of a note he received from a Fanning/Howey building representative updating him on feedback from clients who toured one of Pike’s buildings. The person was very complimentary of the appearance of the building. In addition, Mr. Metzler sadly informed the Board of the passing of Mr. Chuck Willig. Mrs. Poore mentioned that three Board members attended the ISBA Conference. She expressed that she thoroughly enjoyed a presentation by the keynote speaker, titled, Debunking 50 Myths and Lies about Public Education. The presentation was informative.
