WHAT DOES A HISTORIAN DO?
Actually, it’s pretty amazing work. Historians and curators
oversee collections, such as artwork and historic items. Some
even conduct public service activities for an institution, like being
a spokesperson for TV interviews and live exhibitions. Museum
technicians and conservators prepare and restore objects and
documents in museum collections and exhibits.
study it … preserve it …
maybe even make it!
DID YOU KNOW THAT …
• In the Renaissance period, beer was safer to drink
than water. The beer’s fermentation process killed
the bacteria that caused diseases such as cholera
and dysentery.
• The shortest war on record was fought between
Zanzibar and England in 1896. Zanzibar
surrendered after 38 minutes.
And where do you find history types? Maybe you thought they
work in dark, dusty basements. Surprise! Most curators can be
found in places like zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and
historical sites anywhere in the world!
MACOMB PROGRAM ADVANTAGES
The History Program at Macomb Community College offers
transferable history courses, along with a host of transferable
general education courses required for a bachelor-level degree
at a four-year college.
An undergraduate degree in history is also a solid foundation to
pursue advanced degrees in politics and law.
Although some curator jobs require only a bachelor’s degree,
many employers require curators to have a master’s degree
combined with related work experience. Museum technicians
must have a bachelor’s degree; conservators generally need a
master’s degree.
• The arm of King Henry I of England was 36 inches
long; he decreed that the standard measurement of
a “foot” should be one-third that length—12 inches.
• Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the
telephone, never phoned his wife or his mother;
they were both deaf.
