I liked it when the dogs ran over the people. The black and white dog spoke to Mr. Itter and scared him!’ By Penny Goss (more on pages 3 and 6) ***Have you heard your child read today? We encourage all students to practise ‘Strivingby fornow, Excellence’ their reading at home about 5 nights per week. Therefore, most students 1887 should have read at least between 30-35 nights. Well Open donesince if you have kept up! ***We can all work together to rid the community of Head Lice. Let’s check our heads once per week!*** 2 Happy Birthday to Logan Malik who had his birthday yesterday. On behalf of the Puckapunyal Primary School Community, we wish Logan a very Happy Birthday! Our Year 6 Jackets and School Shirts have arrived! The students are very excited now that they can wear their special jackets and shirts for 2017! Our school captains, Jack Anderson and Taliah Greenwood make great uniform models! Easter Raffle fundraiser: What a wonderfully generous community we have; donating prizes and purchasing / selling tickets! This is one of our major fundraisers and we appreciate your support. Keep them coming! Mothers’ Day: On the Thursday or Friday before Mothers’ Day (in term 2) we will be having a Mothers’ Day stall. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to buy inexpensive gifts for their mum, grandma, neighbour or aunt. If you have any suitable items for this stall, we would be most grateful. They can be left at the office. We also require approximately two hours of help on the day, running the stall. Please let me know if you are able to assist with this. Healthy lunch tip: Veggies!! Experts tell us that we should all be eating two pieces of fruit and five serves of veggies daily. This can be challenging, but eating some of those serves at lunchtime and throughout the day certainly makes this easier. Here are a few suggestions. Raw vegetables, including asparagus, bean sprouts, beans, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, mushrooms, snow peas, tomatoes etc. I recommend your child trying cucumber – it is amazing how many children love this. Salads: using leftover rice or pasta, boiled egg, canned corn and your choice of vegetables. Use whatever flavourings your child enjoys (soy sauce, mayonnaise, nacho sauce, even BBQ or tomato sauce). Vegetables are also great in or with dips, and can be included in cakes, muffins and scones. Ride2School!: Well done to our active travellers – we almost doubled our bike riders and walkers from last month. See if you can keep the habit going. Have a terrific week! Sue Ranger, Defence School Transition Aide Friday 31st March is the last day of the term. All students will be dismissed from school at 1:30 p.m. The students will only require a morning play lunch as they can have their lunch once they are home that day. We will finish off the term with a 1:10 p.m. assembly which all parents are invited to attend. We have some awards to hand out, some presentations and some performances for assembly. Please come along. It will be an Out of Uniform Day on this day as it always is on the last day of term. There will not be any afternoon school buses available for our children on the last day of term. Good luck to all students and their families during the term break! * The first day of Term 2 is Tuesday 18th April, 2017.* ‘Striving for Excellence’ Open since 1887 POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR REWARD UPDATE Very similar scores this week which means that Melba retains the lead. This week, SRC representatives, Josh Moses and Dani Corocher reminded our students of the ‘The Morning Before School’ rules: - You must not arrive at school before 8:50 in the morning - No jumping over the school bags at line up areas - No kicking or throwing ball games at the front of the school - No playing down the back of the school; stay at the front so you can get to your line up area quicker - No chasing games; Tiggy and Red Rover should only be played at recess and lunchtimes ‘When the dog jumped there was an explosion burst. I liked it when the soldier sang songs to the black dog’ By Ruth Reilly ‘I liked it when they used the pretend bombs and triggers. I liked it when they sang the song. I liked the soldier because he was realistic.’ By Kieran Gibbons ‘I liked it when they had the fake bombs because it shot at me! It made me excited! I liked it when the dogs went in my face.’ By Lilly Mackay ‘Messenger Dogs was good. It was interactive. We were learning and it was fun. The explosions were fantastic and the puppets were realistic! It was sad in parts but it was still fun!’ By Lachlan Thompson ‘I loved the show because it was a great influence on how to show us the past and how these dogs took a message when they were miles away. The puppets were very realistic. My favourite part was when they had a tiny little scene. It looked like mountains and rocks and the mini dogs, Trick, Bullet and Nell were all jumping over the rocks. I loved the sound effects!’ By Hannah Lucas ‘The Messenger Dogs were amazing. I loved how they talked about army stuff because we live on an army base. When we got to the explosions part it freaked me out a bit because I didn’t know when it was going to happen. I wonder how and why they picked those particular dogs for the show. My favourite bit was how quickly they got changed during the show.’ By Liam McPhillips Have you been to our assemblies and watched the Pucka News? If you haven’t you are missing out. Please ask your children about Pucka News. Or better still, come to our assemblies and see it for yourself. At assembly this week Caring was announced as our School Value of the week. That means teachers are looking for students who are demonstrating ‘Caring’ to be eligible for the Student of the Week award. We encourage parents to talk to their students about our values throughout the year. What is Caring? Year 5 student, Hannah Lucas read out the meaning of Caring. Assembly MC, Nannah Taylor and her assistants, conducted a short play to develop a clearer understanding of Caring. Well done, kids! ‘Caring is paying attention to the things that matter to you. Youfor can care for yourself, for other people, for pets or for ‘Striving Excellence’ special things. When you care for something you treat it with respect Open since and 1887concern.’ 4 Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week. That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home, etc. Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are very busy places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means, we can plan to cover certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs. My favourite messenger dog was Nell because she spoke about what their jobs were during World War 1. They showed us how they ran by running around us. The actors quickly went back behind the screen and got changed throughout the whole show. When the hurt soldier came he scared us because he slapped his hand down hard. We got a fright. I liked how they had signs up on display.’ By Dimitee Taylor ‘Striving for Excellence’ Open since 1887 7 Wednesday 22nd March, 2017 Dear Parents, Recently, the Puckapunyal Primary School applied for a Term 2 Sporting Schools Grant from the Federal Government. If we are successful we will soon receive a grant. That means, in Term 2 the Puckapunyal Primary School is offering an opportunity for students to participate in some Before School Sport. To apply for the grant we had to choose different sports to be the themes of the sessions – for Term 2 the sports are: Tuesdays - Triathlon (Jogging and Swimming) at the Area Swimming Pool for Years 3-6 students (students will be walked to school by staff after the sessions). This activity is a great opportunity for students who want to enter the Team Triathlon in early August Wednesdays - Triathlon (Cycling) at school (using Sanananda Rd) for Years 3-6 students. This activity is a great opportunity for students who want to enter the Team Triathlon in early August or practise their bike riding skills for the Bike Education Program in Term 2. Thursdays - Golf and Bat Tennis/Tennis at school for Foundation to Year 6 students. Beginning Week 2 of Term 2. Any student in the year levels that match the activity can attend. There is no cost. Class teachers and other staff will be there to meet the students, supervise them and give them an opportunity to participate. Please see the timetable on page 8. To participate in any of the sessions, we must have a return slip before the date of the intended session. Families can pick and choose optimal dates. Return slips will be available at the front of the school office and on our school website. Please do not hesitate to contact the school for any more information. We hope that all families enjoy the day. On Wednesday 26th April, at a special 9am morning assembly, we will have a commemoration to pay respect to the ANZACs. Mrs. Janine Franks and some of our students will be conducting the commemoration. There will also be performances from our school choir. We encourage students to bring wreaths to school and any child in cubs, scouts, guides, etc, can wear their uniforms for the commemoration. All parents are welcome to attend our commemoration. It will be held in the school’s PC Centre. As in previous years, our school choir will also be attending the dawn service at Memorial Park on ANZAC Day. We will be performing 2 songs at 5:45 a.m. We would encourage all school community members to attend the service. At both ANZAC commemorations, our school captains will be laying wreaths on behalf of the school. Ms O’Connor has begun choir rehearsals for the Dawn Service. The Years 2-6 students in the choir have been practising during some lunch eating times. Jake Eastwood, Jayden Morgan, Morgan Matthews and Jazzmi Faisal in F/1 O’M have already won certificates in Mathletics! Well done!
