looking for scholarships

PARENTS: THIS SCHOLARSHIP BOOKLET IS BASED ON 2011 INFORMATION; AMOUNTS AND DEADLINE
DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION WILL BE POSTED AT SCHOOL AND ON
THE MISD WEBSITE, midlandisd.net AT DIFFERENT TIMES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. IT IS THE
STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE POSTINGS OF NEW SCHOLARSHIPS.
The scholarships listed are local and national. There are many more scholarships available through various colleges and universities. If you are interested in
obtaining information about scholarships offered at specific colleges or universities, please contact your school counselor. Lee High School contact is Melanie
Cavazos 689-1606. Midland High School contact is Kerry Hoover 689-1114. Coleman High School contact is Joyce Nichols 689-5007.
COLLEGE ADMISSIONS:
1. Take the SAT and/or ACT. Be sure to take the test accepted by the university to which you will apply. Contact your counselor for testing dates.
2. Apply as early as possible to the schools of your choice.
3. Request that the registrar send your transcript and any other information requested by the college as soon as possible.
LOOKING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
With the price of a four-year college education now often exceeding $100,000 students and their families need more than ever to think creatively. The
common link among scholarship winners: They apply. You need to apply again and again. It is a lot of work, no question, but perhaps less than it seems. The
scholarship process is a game, and you don’t automatically know how to play. You can master it. Start by looking at past scholarship entries. You can request
them from sponsors. Talk to past winners. Don’t give up. Do not be dissuaded from trying. Look at all of your connections: parents, activities, church, ethnic
background, even problem areas (for example there are scholarships for students with asthma).
Hints for searching:
Check the senior office areas. A lot of scholarship information is sent directly to high schools.
Use databases. Visit Scholarship Clearinghouse http://jlmscholarshipclearinghouse.blogspot.com/ a project of the Junior League of
Midland 682-4732 as a service for Midland County students.
Visit scholarships.com or college-scholarships.com which catalogs 600,000 scholarships. Type the word “Scholarship” into your search engine to bring
up many other useful sites. Most of the sites are free.
Follow the Internet bread-crumb trail. Type a scholarship you know of into a search engine. Web sites that list that scholarship will list others, too.
That method will lead you to secondary and smaller Web sites.
Quiz your parents and grandparents. Their employers or professional organizations may have scholarship programs for children of employees or
members.
Interview local bank managers because banks often hold fund accounts for community scholarship programs, they can lead you in the right direction.
Start as early as possible. That means if you have a 7 th or 8th grade sibling or friend, tell them to get busy researching now.
Don’t forget to check with all the places you have volunteered and check with sponsors of any activities in which you have participated. There are
many scholarships for students who have spent many hours volunteering.
Beware of these scams. A company that guarantees a scholarship or your money back, or that says it will do all the work. Scholarship services that
charge fees or claim to have “exclusive” information. Services that ask for a credit card or say you are a finalist when you didn’t even enter.
Finally, as you fill out those applications and write essays, try to give a real idea of who you are. Don’t just talk about academic or work
experiences. Use the essays to tell stories that give a clear picture of the kind of challenges you’ve met or overcome – not just in school but in life.

IF YOU WANT A COLLEGE EDUCATION, MIDLAND COLLEGE CAN HELP!!!
Midland College provides financial assistance, in the form of academics or need grants-in-aid, for virtually every high school graduate who wishes to
attend college and needs some financial help. The following pages are scholarships administered by Midland College. There is also grant
information.
There also are "work-study" opportunities for qualified students that allow them to receive financial assistance by working up to 15 hours per week
on the campus in various departments. The work-study students often receive valuable on-the-job training and references from these opportunities.
By visiting with the Midland College counseling staff early, high school students can learn of the requirements for financial assistance. They also
can determine which courses are required to achieve their own career goals.
Those students interested in applying for grants-in-aid should apply as early as possible. Please remember that the deadlines shown for specific
grants offered by or administered by Midland College are the lst dates to make application. Those who make application earlier are more likely to
be approved.
For more information about Midland College, come by the Office of Student Services, Administration Building or call
685-4501 for an appointment.

NOTES FOR YOUR INFORMATION
** Check with counselor often and get application forms and review deadlines for all possible scholarships.
**Be sure to get recommendations from people who know you will and whom you can be sure will give unique, well written recommendations.
**When you ask someone to write a recommendation for you, give them a copy of a resume about yourself. Make sure that they know specific things about you,
your nature, and your accomplishments.
**Dress nicely for interviews and be prepared. If the scholarship is for a specific area, make sure you understand they are giving the scholarship for a specific
reason, and address that idea when you interview.
**Never be late turning in application and materials or never be late for an interview.
**Make sure all hand written applications and essays are neat and readable. Keep them tidy and clean.
*****If you receive a scholarship, send a letter updating the donor about you and your career, every year that you benefit from the scholarship. It is
polite and it makes an everlasting impression on the donors. They will see that it is important to keep awarding the scholarship and be proud of our
youth seeking higher education. Some renewable scholarships even require yearly updates. PLEASE be the polite, thankful, young adult we all know
you are. Write a thank you and updates at least yearly.
******Please remember that you are responsible for turning in your scholarships to the proper place and at the proper time.
