The Hobbit: Chapter 8/ 9
Directions: For EACH TOPIC SENTENCE given, write a paragraph proving it, citing at least two
direct quotes from the chapter. Each paragraph must be 7-10 sentences long (including the topic
sentence). Be sure to cite the page numbers properly. See model. Attach loose leaf if needed. Be sure
to read the whole chapter before writing a paragraph.
Example: from The Giver
In the beginning of the story, an event is discussed that allows the reader to get an idea of how the
“community” is controlled. When Jonas is trying to figure out a word for how he was “feeling” about a
certain event that was to take place, he reminisces about the day an unidentified aircraft flew over the
community. The reader is able to see that this was an unusual event because, “all of the citizens had been
ordered to go into the nearest building and stay there” (2). The fact that an airplane cause such an uproar
shows that this community is separated from other places. The reader also learns that the pilot, who made
a mistake, was to be “released” when it stated, “For a contributing citizen to be released from the
community was a terrible punishment” (3). This shows that mistakes are not tolerated and that the
community is very controlled.
The character of Bilbo Baggins is transforming before the readers eyes.
