English Science History Music Art Maths P.S.H.E R.E. Computing

English
We will start the term using Harry Potter as a stimulus for
our writing by comparing the film and text. Children will
be developing their skills in descriptive writing, letter
writing, persuasive writing and writing instructions.
The children will also have explicit spelling and grammar
lessons each week.
PE
Children will be developing the necessary skills to play tag
rugby and netball.
Some children have been selected to take part in top-up
swimming sessions which will run on Friday mornings
through the first half of the term.
Art
In art the children will be designing and creating their own
Mayan masks using paper mache techniques. They will
have the opportunity to make choices of the types of
techniques and materials they wish to use when adding
detail to their designs.
P.S.H.E
During PSHE sessions classes will be
discussing ways to cope with new
situations, what networks they have for
support and how they can support
others to feel safe and happy.
There will be a focus on anti-bulling in
the second half of the term.

Topic Plan
‘A Mayan Mystery’ - The Mayan
civilization c. AD 900
DT
During the second half of this term we will learn about
Mayan food in 900AD and how they used locally
sourced/seasonal/organic ingredients to meet dietary needs
and how Europe benefited from the trade of these foods.
Maths
We will be following the new Maths curriculum where we
will be covering number, shape, measures, data handling,
fractions, decimals and percentages. There will also be a
focus on problem solving and investigative work. It is
vitally important that children can swiftly recall number
facts related to the multiplication tables.
Year 5 and 6
Autumn 2015/16
R.E.
Science
Children will be learning about living things and their
habitats in the first term.
They will then focus on animals including humans.
Computing
Children will be using IPads to support their work in
English and to develop their research skills.
We will have discrete computing sessions focusing on
developing knowledge and awareness of staying safe
online.
History
During the term we will be looking at:

Children will be exploring what beliefs

of faith live out their lives in different
areas of the world.
Children will be encouraged to develop their knowledge
of the topic by asking questions and working
independently to find out relevant information.
Music
Geography
Children will be composing music using
various percussion instruments following
a given theme.
Children will be locating the main countries in Europe
and North or South America. Locate and name principal
cities.
